Councilman to be probed over factory
31 Jan 2007
P. Chandra Sagaran

IPOH: The Ipoh city council has been told to investigate a city councilman for running a plastics factory here without a licence.

The councilman is the majority shareholder and executive chairman of a company that operates the factory in Taman Perdagangan dan Perindustrian here.

Yesterday, Perak executive council member Datuk Chang Ko Youn said that the council had informed him of the matter.

"I have directed the council to investigate and submit a report to me, to be presented at the state executive council meeting for the next course of action.

"Nobody is above the law and being a person holding a public office, he should set an example," said Chang who chairs the exco committee on Local Government and Public Transport.

Last year, Selangor was heavily criticised for re-appointing Datuk Zakaria Deros as Klang municipal councilman.

Zakaria had been building a palatial home without approval, and had been running a satay restaurant without a licence. He eventually declined the appointment after public pressure mounted.

Following the controversy, Penang last month decided it would set a two-term limit on those who serve as councilmen.

The Ipoh councilman is serving his second one-year term after being sworn in with the other 21 council members on Jan 9.

According to documents obtained, the company he controls was served notice to cease operations in September.

The factory, which occupies leased premises, began operations in November 2003.

Yesterday, the factory appeared to be closed. The councilman did not answer phone calls, and city council officials did not return calls for comment.

"The state government, which decided on (these) appointments, should take appropriate action," said Ipoh Barat MP M. Kulasegaran.

KPDNHEP rampas barang elektrik

Tajol Rosli is all for Chinese Muslim mosque in Perak
03 Feb 2007
By Shahrul Hafeez

IPOH, SAT:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Tajol Rosli Ghazali is all for Chinese Muslim mosque抯 in the state.

揑f there are applications and conditions are met, we can approve them. Let the mosque be a big one," he said.

Tajol Rosli said the state would also support applicants in their donation drives to build such mosques.

Speaking to reporters at the launching of the Barisan Nasional Wanita election machinery Task Force here today, he reiterated that the state's stand on the matter was that a mosque should have at least 40 in its congregation to enable it to be used for Friday prayers.

"Applicants must also meet conditions provided in the State Islamic Administration Enactment 2004 on the subject," he said.

Ipoh city councillor to be questioned
03 Feb 2007
P. Chandra Sagaran
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
IPOH: The Ipoh City councillor at the centre of a row over an unlicensed factory will not be suspended.

Perak Housing, Local Government and Public Transport Committee chairman Datuk Chang Ko Youn said: "We will give the member of the Ipoh City Council an opportunity to present his case, which will be discussed at the next state executive council meeting.

"I am expecting a report on the matter from Datuk Bandar Ipoh Datuk Mohamad Rafiai Moktar on Monday. I will present it at the meeting."

Ipoh Barat Member of Parliament M. Kulasegaran said the council should convene a full board meeting to discuss the issue, as it had affected the image of and public confidence in local councillors.

"The meeting would be an opportunity for all 22 councillors to publicly state their stand on the matter," he said, adding that he would like to know whether the report would be made public and who conducted the investigation.

Kulasegaran also said residents of the zone under the purview of the second-term councillor were in a dilemma, as calls to his handphone have gone unanswered.

"What would happen if they need the services of the councillor in an emergency?" he asked.

The 31-year-old councillor is said to have been operating an unlicensed plastic product manufacturing business in Taman Perdagangan and Perindustrian since 2003.

The business now appears to be closed. In September, the council sent a letter directing him to stop operations.

If he is charged under the Licensing By-Laws of Trade, Business and Industry of the Local Government Act 1976, he can be jailed for up to a year or fined RM2,000 or both.

He is the majority stakeholder and executive chairman of the company, according to information obtained from the Companies Commission of Malaysia.
