Trio defy the odds to win silver
By AFTAR SINGH

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian skeet shooters are without a coach but they defied the odds to win the silver medal in both the men's individual and team events on the last day of the South-East Asian (Seasa) Championships at the Subang Range yesterday.

Richard Cheong finished second in the individual event with a score of 136 behind Singapore's Lee Yee (138). And he teamed up with 2005 Manila SEA Games bronze medallist Ricky Teh and Jeff Gan for a total of 321 to finish just two points behind the Philippines' Rosario Paul Brian, Bernardo Patricio and Tong Gabriel.

The 44-year-old Richard said that although he had two silver medals to show, he was not too pleased with his performance.

揑 have a personal best score of 122 over five rounds but I only managed 113 in qualifying. I failed to surpass the Korat SEA Games qualifying mark of 115. And I am disappointed with my efforts,'' said Richard, who was in the silver medal-winning team at the Manila Games.

Ricky, who has qualified for the Games, added that they needed a coach to help them improve.

The National Shooting Association of Malaysia (NSAM) set a target of winning five gold medals in the championships but the team surpassed the target with a haul of 8-6-8 for third place behind Vietnam (12-12-4) and Thailand (8-7-11).

Nine countries took part in the championships with 24 golds at stake.

In the junior category, Malaysia finished second on 5-10-2 behind Thailand (6-5-3).

NSAM not revising Games target, says Jasni
By AFTAR SINGH

PETALING JAYA: The best-ever results in the South-East Asian (Seasa) Championships have not clouded the National Shooting Association of Malaysia抯 (NSAM) vision of a realistic target in the Korat SEA Games in December.

At the just concluded Seasa meet, Malaysia had a haul of 8-6-8. But the NSAM executive secretary, Jasni Shaari, said that they had set a modest target of winning four gold medals in the SEA Games because not all their rivals were represented by top shooters in the seven-day championships in Subang.

揤ietnam were the only ones to send their top shooters while Thailand only had a handful of them. Winning the eight gold medals does not reflect the real strength of our shooters,

Team USA book Olympic berth in style

LAS VEGAS (Nevada): LeBron James put on another shooting clinic in a 118-81 rout of Argentina as the United States locked up a tournament gold medal to go with an Olympic berth at the FIBA Americas Championship on Sunday.

James, who had a perfect night against Uruguay earlier in the tournament by hitting all 11 of his field goals, led the heavily-favoured Americans with four three pointers in the third quarter and capped his night with a game-high 31 points.

揕eBron's performance was one of the best ever in an international game that a US player has ever had,

Shooting: Suryani makes birthday wish for trip to Beijing
By RAJES PAUL

PETALING JAYA: Top national rifle shooter Nur Suryani Mohd Taibi (pic) made a wish on her 25th birthday yesterday to end the year with a bang by clinching a spot in the Beijing Olympics.

http://www.thestar.com.my/archives/2007/9/25/sports/s_58suryani.jpg
She is motivated to keep up Malaysia's good tradition of having at least a qualifier for Olympic shooting. Malaysia shooters have featured in every Games since 1956 except for 1968 in Mexico.

But none has made the grade yet to Beijing next year. The shooters have the last shot to make it in the Asian Championships in Kuwait from Dec 3-13.

And Suryani wants to feature in the 50m rifle three-position event and meet the 580 qualifying mark for the Olympics.

揟his is a special day for me (my birthday). And I have this renewed motivation to make the cut for the Olympic. It will be a great disappointment if I do not achieve this,

Seng Chye gets big boost ahead of Manila meet

PETALING JAYA: Veteran shooter Edward Khor Seng Chye is in the right frame of mind for a good outing in the Asian Clay Championships in Manila next week after shattering his national record in the double trap event in the Tun Hanif Trophy at the National Shooting Range in Subang yesterday.

The 46-year-old Johorean, who has qualified for the Korat SEA Games, first broke the record in the qualifying with a score of 132, improving on the record he set at the same venue seven years ago by a point. In the final, Edward amassed 176 to improve on the record by three points.

Emas lagi untuk Malaysia di Sukan SEA Karat
30-11-2007

Nur Suryani wins fifth medal but fails to claim individual gold

PETALING JAYA: Nur Suryani Mohd Taibi bagged her fifth medal of the 24th SEA Games at the Sports Authority of Thailand Shooting Range in Bangkok yesterday. But there was no glittering end to her Thai stint.

Nur Suryani shot down 389 points to help win the silver medal with team-mates Muslifah Zulkifli and Shahera Rahim in the women's 10m air rifle event yesterday.

The Malaysians amassed a total of 1,165 points, four behind Thai winners Tavisri Kusuma, Sasithorn Hongprasert and Thanyaluk Chatphibunsin.

Tham Thy Hong, Nguyen Thi Xuan and Le Thi Anh Dao bagged the bronze for Vietnam with 1,160.

http://www.thestar.com.my/archives/2007/12/2/sports/nur.jpg Dejected: Nur Suryani comtemplates her flat outing in the shooting competition.

The 25-year-old Nur Suryani抯 hopes of winning a sixth medal was dashed after she scored 100.4 in the individual final for a sixth-place finish on 489.4 points.

Muslifah, who also made the top-eight final, was fifth on 489.9.

Singapore抯 Ser Xiang Wei, claimed the gold with a superb 103.1 for a total score of 494.1.

Prior to yesterday, the 25-year-old Nur Suryani had won the team gold in the 50m rifle prone and the silver in the individual event. She also bagged two bronzes in the individual and team competitions in the 50m rifle three-position event.

Nur Suryani, the Manchester Commonwealth Games bronze medallist, was unhappy despite bagging her best-ever medal haul in the SEA Games since her debut in Kuala Lumpur 2001.

揗y performance was not good because I have been shooting more than 390 (for the 10m air rifle event) in local competitions and in training. But we did not have much time to practise since we arrived here more than a week ago.

揥e only had one chance to practise at the electronic scoring range while most of our practice rounds took place under the manual scoring system,

Skeet shooters carry nation抯 gold-medal hopes

http://www.thestar.com.my/archives/2007/12/2/sports/ricky.jpg
PETALING JAYA: Seasoned campaigners Ricky Teh (pic) and Richard Cheong and rookie Jeff Gan carry Malaysia抯 hopes of winning an individual gold medal in the SEA Games shooting competition which concludes with the men's skeet event at the Sports Authority of Thailand Clay Target Range in Bangkok.

Thirty gold medals have been decided so far with Thailand, Singapore and Vietnam bagging the lion share of the titles.

With the rifle and pistol shooters winning just two golds from team events, the pressure is now on Ricky and Richard to win an individual gold for Malaysia in the men's skeet event.

Ricky and Richard are former SEA Games gold medallists. Richard was in the winning team from Manila 1991 while Ricky won in Hanoi in 2003 and went on to represent the country in the 2004 Olympics in Athens.

But in Manila two years ago, Richard and Ricky settled for the silver and bronze respectively behind Paul Brian Rosario of the Philippines.

Rosario will be around to defend his title in the competition which began with the first of three rounds yesterday. He will be the favourite for the individual title but National Shooting Association of Malaysia (NSAM) secretary Jasni Shaari believes the Malaysians can rise to the challenge in the team event.

揟he skeet shooters have always delivered medals in past Games but whether they can win the gold will depend on their performance on the day itself.

Shooters out to make amends in Asian meet

THE top Malaysian shooters fell short of achieving the four-gold medal target in the SEA Games but they can make a quick rebound in the Asian Championships, beginning today in Kuwait.

The Asian meet is the main qualifying event for the Beijing Olympics and nine Malaysians get the chance to win a quota spot for the country in their respective events.

A country can earn a maximum of two quota spots from the Asian meet provided their athletes have not qualified automatically from the World Cup.

Those in with a shot are women's rifle shooters Nur Suryani Mohd Taibi, Nur Ain Ibrahim, Muslifah Zulkifli and Shahera Rahim; their male counterpart, Mohd Hameleay Abdul Mutalib, and pistol shooter Hasli Izwan Amir Hasan, who led the Malaysian team to the gold medal in the 25m rapid fire event in the SEA Games last Friday.

Malaysia also have representation in men抯 trap (Bernard Yeoh), double trap (Edward Khor) and Ricky Teh (skeet).

Although the top Malaysian shooters were off target in the individual events at the Games, their chances of making the cut on merit for the Olympics cannot be discounted.

After winning five medals, including a gold in the women抯 team 50m rifle prone to emerge as the best Malaysian performer in the shooting competition, Suryani is fancying her chance to make history as the first Malaysian female rifle shooter to qualify for the Olympics.

She is taking inspiration from her performance in the World Championships in Croatia last year.

揑 finished 14th in the women抯 10m air rifle competition and I was the second best Asian performer behind a Chinese shooter,

Zainal Abidin Juarai Kejohanan Menembak Dunia Di Bisley England

Pengurus Sukan (Menembak) Majlis Sukan Negara (MSN), Lt Mohd Emran Zakaria berkata, MSN menyanjung tinggi kejayaan skuad Malaysia khususnya kegigihan Zainal Abidin yang mengondol kejuaraan acara individu Queen.

MSN sedang menimbang ganjaran yang setimpal dengan kejayaan atlet yang mengharum nama negara di persada dunia, katanya.
