World Instant Noodle Association (WINA) Seeks to Have Instant Noodles Recognized as an Earth Food

Instant noodles started as one man’s dream and 52 years later it is ubiquitous, with more than 93.6 billion serving eaten in 2009 alone – about 13 packets or cups for every person on the planet.

A measure of instant noodles popularity is that according to a Japanese poll in the year 2000, instant noodles were the most important Japanese invention of the century, ahead of the karaoke machine and the compact disc!

This modern day staple has evolved from a Japanese snack to becoming an ‘Earth Food’, an accepted part of the daily diet of millions around the world.

Momofuku Ando, a poor Japanese inventor aimed to make noodles that could be prepared by just adding hot water. In the spring of 1958 after a year of experimenting in his garden shed in Osaka he came up with the prototype of instant noodles as we know it, by deep frying the noodles before adding hot water.

Ando named his creation ‘Chicken Ramen’, and soon other flavors were introduced, and competitors joined the fray.Ando went on to establish Nissin Food Products, still a major producer and innovator of instant noodles to this day.

As the ‘Father of Instant Noodles’, Ando was naturally concerned with the development and reputation of his legacy, which lead him to set up the World Instant Noodle Association (WINA) that was established in March 1997 as IRMA (International Ramen Manufacturers Association).

The purpose of the association was to improve the industry and enhance people's diet around the world by improving the quality of instant noodles as well as increasing consumption.

WINA organized a biennale summit to bring the leaders in instant noodles together to discuss and decide upon ways to make this food better, and better accepted globally. In 2008, WINA held the 6th World Instant Noodles Summit, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the invention of instant noodles in Osaka, the birthplace of the products.

According to WINA Chairman, Mr Koki Ando (President and CEO of Nissin Foods Holdings Co Ltd) who is also the son of Momofuku Ando, at the last summit the association announced the Earth Food Declaration to express its commitment to ensure food safety by sharing information and to contribute to society through instant noodles.

As a preservable, light, easy-to-cook foodstuff, instant noodles have aided relief efforts in many catastrophes. “We set up the WINA Disaster Relief Fund as part of our Earth Food commitment to contributing to society. In less than two years, WINA contributed a total of 1.7 million servings of instant noodles as emergency rations for six disasters including the recent Haiti Earthquake, the Myanmar Cyclone, and the Sichuan Earthquake,” Mr. Ando said, explaining the acceptance of instant noodles as a go-to food for disaster relief.
WINA’s commitment to making instant noodles an earth food extends to food safety as well.

“The situation is such that a quality problem in one company in a remote country could possibly deal a fatal blow to the entire industry. For this reason we established the WINA Food Safety Research Fund that will assist in taking preventive measures and sharing information on food safety,” Mr. Ando said.

WINA will hold the 7th World Instant Noodle Summit in Kuala Lumpur from April 20th to April 22nd with the theme ‘Earth Food:Making it Happen’, with Nestlé serving as the host company.Delegates from around the world will congregate to discuss all things concerning instant noodle with the aim of securing the status of instant noodles as an earth food.

“For many years, instant noodles have been misperceived as a fast food with little nutritional value, the last resort of students scrounging for a late night snack,” said WINA Governor, Mr Izham Mohamed (Executive Director-Food Business Unit, Nestle Products Sdn Bhd).

“That has changed dramatically thanks to innovations and improvements to the formulation, manufacturing, packaging and marketing of instant noodles over the years that has helped it move closer to assuming the status of an accepted staple diet for many people globally, in effect becoming an earth food,” Mr. Izham added.

Today, there are thousands of instant noodle products on sale globally, and hundreds in Malaysia alone, with new flavors and innovation being introduced constantly, such as ‘lite’ noodles that contain less fat and less sodium.

“While WINA member companies make it our responsibility to satisfy consumers by serving safe and trustworthy foods, consumers have a responsibility to understand and practice proper food handling, and to make educated decisions regarding their diet. They need to be in control. This is why consumer education covering a wide spectrum of food and diet issues is a priority for WINA and its members,” said Mr.Izham.

He said that during the upcoming Summit WINA members would seek ways to elevate instant noodles to an earth food, with business and social perspectives including the needs for dietary and food education to consumers.

“We look forward to the participation of as many of our industry colleagues as possible,” Mr.Izham said.

World instant noodle demand shows little sign of slowing; in fact, an economic downturn may increase demand as more customers choose to eat simple food at home rather than eating out.

In Thailand, since 2005, consumers can refer to the Mama Noodles Index as an economic indicator.Developed by Mama Noodles, the country’s most popular brand, the rationale is that when people cannot afford more expensive food, sales of instant noodles will increase.

In 2007 China led the world in terms of instant noodle consumption with 50 billion servings, with Indonesia second with 15 billion servings.

WINA founder Momofuku Ando would be proud of just how far instant noodles have come and how his simple invention is now on par with staples such as rice, bread and pasta in terms of acceptance and demand from consumers.

He lived to 96 years and gave a speech to employees at his company headquarters the day before he died.He ate instant noodles every day.
