Pakistan starts assembling Pakistani-built combat aircraft

Updated : 2009-06-30 15:41

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Air Force (PAF) started assembling of the first Pakistani-built JF-17 Thunder combat aircraft on Tuesday, local TV channel reported.

Rao Qamar Suleman, Chief of Staff of the PAF, inaugurated the construction in a ceremony at Amra which houses the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex in the mountainous north of the Punjab province. Top military and civilian officials of Pakistan and China attended the ceremony, the private TV channel GEO NEWS reported.

GEO NEWS quoted Suleman as saying that this success will enhance Pakistan's air power in the region and at international scale. Suleman praised the Chinese cooperation and said that the joint Sino-Pakistan project is a living example of the cooperation between the two countries.

Pakistan and China signed an agreement for the production of 42 JF-17 fighters, which are expected to form the backbone of Pakistani aerial combat fleet in coming years.

The Pakistan Air Force has so far received eight JF-17 jets from China that are being used for testing and evaluation. The PAF plans to raise its first squadron of JF-17 jets by the end of this year.

PAF capable of destroying drones : Air Chief

RISALPUR: Air Chief Marshal Rao Qamar Suleman Thursday said that air force destroyed several hideouts and caches of ammunition of militants and paved the way for the military to make advance in the troubled areas of Swat.

He said that air force is completely supporting the military in its ongoing efforts in the tribal areas and Swat, adding F-16, F-7 and Mirages are taking part in the Swat operation.

The Air Chief maintained that Pakistan armed forces are grappling with not only the greater external enemies but also the problems of extremism and terrorism within the country.

Later talking to journalists, he said targeting the drones and taking them down is not a problem and Pakistan Air Force is fully capable for the purpose; however, any decision in this regard rests with the parliament and the government.

However, the Air Chief added that the action could lead Pakistan to confrontation with Nato or US.

Air Chief Marshal Rao said that Pakistan shot down Indian UAV drone during the 2001-02 standoff with India.

He hoped that Pakistan is likely to receive AWACS planes in November or October, adding India was given the same aircrafts which could lead to fresh escalation and arms race in the region.

Rao Qamar Suleman said that the country has a lot of expectations from the Air Force, which it will try to fulfil at all cost without fail.

Car Bomb at Pakistan Market Kills at Least 100

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton pledged U.S. support for Islamabad's campaign against Islamic militants, after a car bomb struck a busy market in northwestern Pakistan on Wednesday, killing 100 people, most of whom were women and children.

"I strongly condemn the cowardly attack today in Afghanistan," Clinton said.

"My thoughts and prayers are with all those who were injured and the families who lost loved ones."

SLIDESHOW: Deadly Car Bombing in Pakistan Market

More than 200 people were wounded in the blast in the main northwestern city of Peshawar, the deadliest in a surge of attacks by suspected insurgents this month. The government blamed militants seeking to avenge an army offensive launched this month against Al Qaeda and Taliban in their stronghold close to the Afghan border.

The bombing was the deadliest since explosions hit homecoming festivities for former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto in Karachi in October 2007, killing about 150 people. Bhutto was later slain in a separate attack.

Wednesday's bomb destroyed much of the Mina Bazaar in Peshawar's old town, a warren of narrow alleys clogged with stalls and shops selling dresses, toys and cheap jewelry that drew many female shoppers and children in the conservative city.

The blast collapsed buildings, including a mosque, and set scores of shops ablaze. The wounded sat amid burning debris and parts of bodies as a huge plume of gray smoke rose above the city.

Crying for help, men tried to pull survivors from beneath wreckage. One man carried away a baby with a bloody face and a group of men rescued a young boy covered in dust, but others found only bodies of the dead. A two-story building collapsed as firefighters doused it with water, triggering more panic.

"There was a deafening sound and I was like a blind man for a few minutes," said Mohammad Usman, who was wounded in the shoulder. "I heard women and children crying and started to help others. There was the smell of human flesh in the air."

Clinton, on her first visit to Pakistan as secretary of state, was a three-hour drive away in the capital, Islamabad, when the blast took place. Speaking to reporters, she praised the army's anti-Taliban offensive in South Waziristan and offered U.S. support.

"I want you to know this fight is not Pakistan's alone," Clinton said. "These extremists are committed to destroying what is dear to us as much as they are committed to destroying that which is dear to you and to all people. So this is our struggle as well."

Standing beside her, Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said the violence would not break his government's will to fight back.

"The resolve and determination will not be shaken," Qureshi said. "People are carrying out such heinous crimes — they want to shake our resolve. I want to address them: We will not buckle. We will fight you. We will fight you because we want peace and stability in Pakistan."

Peshawar, the economic hub of the northwest and the seat of the provincial government, has long been a favorite target of militants who control large parts of territory to the west in tribal regions near the Afghanistan border. Extremism has flourished there since it was used as a staging ground in the 1980s for U.S.-funded fighters preparing to battle the Soviet-installed regime in Afghanistan.

No group claimed responsibility for the bombing, but that is not unusual, especially when the victims are Pakistani civilians. North West Frontier Province Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain said 100 people were killed. A doctor said 60 of the dead were either women or children.

Three bombs have exploded in Peshawar this month, including one that killed more than 50 people. They are part of at least 10 major attacks in Pakistan that have killed 250 people either claimed by or blamed on Taliban militants.

Most have targeted security forces, but some bombs have gone off in public places, apparently to undercut support for the army's assault on the border and expose the weakness of the government.

The Taliban have warned Pakistan that they would stage more attacks if the army does not end its ground offensive in the South Waziristan tribal region, where the military has sent 30,000 troops to flush out insurgents. South Waziristan is a major base for the Pakistani Taliban and other foreign militants.

Hussain blamed the militants for Wednesday's attack.

"We are hitting them at their center of terrorism, and they are hitting back targeting Peshawar," he said. "This is a tough time for us. We are picking up the bodies of our women and children, but we will follow these terrorists and eliminate them."

U.S. Reportedly Rushes Aid for Pakistani Assaults on Taliban
The Obama administration has reportedly rushed hundreds of millions of dollars in arms, equipment and high-tech sensors to Pakistani forces in recent months to support military operations in Taliban-controlled areas along the border with Afghanistan.

The Obama administration has reportedly rushed hundreds of millions of dollars in arms, equipment and high-tech sensors to Pakistani forces in recent months to support military operations in Taliban-controlled areas along the border with Afghanistan.

The New York Times, citing senior U.S. and Pakistani officials, reports that Obama personally intervened at the request of Pakistan's top army general to quicken the delivery of 10 Mi-17 troop transport helicopters. Senior Pentagon officials have also rushed spare parts for Cobra helicopter gunships, night vision goggles, body armor and eavesdropping equipment to the region, the New York Times reports.

American military surveillance drones are also supplying video images to Pakistani ground commanders, the New York Times reports, and Pentagon officials have supplied the Pakistani Air Force with infrared sensors for F-16 warplanes to lead bombing assaults on militant strongholds in South Waziristan.

The massive military buildup comes as President Obama considers sending tens of thousands more American soldiers to war in neighboring Afghanistan.

On Wednesday, a car bomb killed at least 100 people and wounded more than 200 others in northwestern Pakistan, indicating that drastic action will be needed to combat terrorism throughout the region -- not just in Afghanistan, where U.S. troops are winding up their deadliest month since the war began eight years ago.

Wednesday's marketplace bombing was the third in Peshawar this month by Taliban forces who seek to undercut support for the Pakistani army and expose the weakness of the Pakistani government. The combined death toll from the three blasts is 250 people.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was in Islamabad, Pakistan's capital, visiting the country for the first time as America's chief diplomat when the attack occurred, and she pledged the U.S. will support Pakistan in its ongoing campaign against militants.

Pakistan is currently struggling against "tenacious and brutal extremist groups," Clinton told reporters Wednesday at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. "I want you to know this fight is not Pakistan's alone. ... These extremists are committed to destroying what is dear to us as much as they are committed to destroying that which is dear to you and to all people. So this is our struggle as well."

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters in Washington on Wednesday that Obama extends his condolences to "innocent victims" of violent extremists in Afghanistan or Pakistan.

"The events in Pakistan demonstrate the lengths extremists will go to and the type of threat they pose not just for this country, but for the country of Pakistan as well," he said.

Wednesday's bombing was part of a "real campaign" by extremists to demonstrate that they're a "force that can strike at any time and any place," said Gabe Schoenfeld, a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute, a Washington-based think tank.

"The war has been in Pakistan for some time," Schoenfeld told Foxnews.com Wednesday. "The Taliban and Al Qaeda are heading for any point that's weak. This is their pushback, an attempt to try and destabilize Pakistan before they're crushed.

"It's a very critical moment. If the Pakistani military can deprive them of a safe haven, they can make it much more difficult for them to operate."

But, he said, the Pakistani authorities so far "cannot stop them."

"The Pakistani government needs to snuff this out and will require pressing hard against the Taliban and their safe haven," he said.

The Taliban was a creation of Pakistan, not USA. Taliban came on the scene only after the liberation of Afghanistan. That is why Taliban can survive in Pakistan for so long.
The people supported by the US in the fight against the Soviets eventually became the Northern Alliance who ended up fighting with the Taliban.
The Taliban was actually supported by the Pakis, Saudis and UAEs. These are the countries who supported them materially as well as recognised them as legitimate government of Afghanistan.

Bomber Outside Pakistan Bank Kills at Least 30
Nov. 2: Pakistani policemen secure the site after a homicide bomb blast in Rawalpindi.

RAWALPINDI, Pakistan —  A homicide bomber killed 30 people outside a bank near Pakistan's capital Monday, while the U.N. said spreading violence in the country had forced it to suspend long-term development work in the northwest regions along the Afghan border.

Islamist insurgents have carried out numerous attacks in Pakistan in recent weeks, killing some 250 people in retaliation for an army offensive in the Pakistan Taliban stronghold of South Waziristan. The bloodshed, some of which has targeted aid workers, has imperiled Western goals of reducing extremism's allure by improving Pakistan's economy.

Monday's explosion in Rawalpindi, a garrison city just a few miles (kilometers) from Islamabad, left bodies on the ground outside the bank and in a nearby hotel parking lot, witness Zahid Dara said. The stricken area also lies close to the army's main headquarters.

"I was nearby and rushed toward the parking area," Dara told Dunya television. "There were many people lying on the ground with bleeding wounds, and a motorcycle was on fire with one man under it."

The attacker rode a motorbike to the scene, and the 30 people dead included military personnel, Rawalpindi police chief Rao Iqbal said. Some 45 others were wounded.

"The bodies were lying all over," said Ali Babar, a rescue official who was doing a refresher course at a nearby college and rushed to the scene to help. "This is a terrible thing. It is happening again and again."

Pakistan's president, prime minister and other top officials condemned the blast but vowed to continue the offensive in South Waziristan, an impoverished and underdeveloped tribal region next to Afghanistan where Al Qaeda is believed to have hideouts.

The U.S. supports the operation because it believes South Waziristan is a safe haven for Islamist extremists involved in attacks on Western troops in Afghanistan.

Washington has also stepped up its efforts to use development aid in a broader battle against spreading militancy. The U.S. government recently approved $7.5 billion in aid over five years to improve Pakistan's economy, education and other nonmilitary sectors.

The U.N. decision to suspend long-term development work in Pakistan's tribal areas and its North West Frontier Province could complicate Washington's goal.

The U.N. made its decision after losing 11 of its personnel in attacks in Pakistan this year, including last month's bombing of the World Food Program's office in Islamabad that killed five people.

U.N. workers were also among the 11 killed in a June suicide bombing of the Pearl Continental Hotel in the main northwest city of Peshawar, and a veteran U.N. official was shot dead while resisting kidnappers at a northwest Pakistan refugee camp in July.

The world body will reduce the level of international staff in the country and confine its work to emergency, humanitarian relief, and security operations, and also "any other essential operations as advised by the secretary-general," the organization said in a statement.

The U.N. has been deeply involved in helping Pakistan deal with refugee crises that have popped up due to army offensives against militants in the northwest.

U.N. spokeswoman Amena Kamaal told The Associated Press that the organization is still determining which programs will be suspended and how many staffers will be withdrawn from the country. She said "long-term development" applied to programs with a five-plus year time frame.

The staff that remains in the country will be assigned additional security, she said.

"We have had 11 of our colleagues killed because of the security situation," Kamaal said. "All of the decisions are being made in light of that."

Foreign Ministry spokesman Abdul Basit said Pakistan understood the U.N.'s reasoning, but that he hoped the organization would resume its development work after the military completed its operation in South Waziristan.

"We hope that our operation will come to an end soon and they will resume their normal operations," he said.

Yes sir, I am very clear about that. Taliban came from Pakistan and entered Afghanistan only after the liberation from the Soviets. They were formed from Afghan refugees who were trained and backed by ISI of pakis. Thats why they are able to survive so well in paksitan after being kicked out of afhganistan by NATO.
The pakis are now fighting the monster of their own creation.

The moral of the story? Don't ever back extremists thinking yu can control them for your own agenda. The pakis are now learning it the very hard way.

the pakis created them thinking they can use taliban to control afghanistan for themselves.
It made perfect sense at that time. The pakis also wanted to use the taliban as proxy warriors for them in india.
But the Taliban grew in ambition and have plans to swallow up Pakistan itself. Thats why Benazir Bhutto was assasinated. They knew she would become the next PM had she run for elections and they hated the idea of a woman for PM.

Homicide Bomb Kills Anti-Taliban Mayor, 11 Others in Pakistan

PESHAWAR, Pakistan —  A homicide bomber blew himself up Sunday in a crowded market in northwestern Pakistan, killing an anti-Taliban mayor who had formed a militia to fight the militants and 11 other people, officials said.

A purported Taliban commander claimed responsibility for the bombing.

The Taliban have carried out a series of attacks in recent weeks aimed at pressuring the government to abandon an offensive launched in mid-October in South Waziristan, the main Taliban and Al Qaeda sanctuary in the country.

The bombing, in the town of Adazai, about 10 miles south of the main northwestern city of Peshawar, killed the town's mayor, Abdul Malik, and 11 other people, including a young girl, said Sahibzada Anis, the top official in Peshawar.

The homicide bomber hit as shoppers thronged a market where goats were being sold to celebrate the upcoming Muslim festival of Eid.

Twenty-five wounded people — several in critical condition — were rushed to a hospital, police officer Abdul Sattar Khan said.

Malik, who had once been a Taliban supporter, later switched sides and formed a local militia to help fight the militants.

"Malik had survived several attacks on his life in the recent past, since he turned against the militants," Anis said. "But today the militants have finally killed him."

"Our local fighters carried out this attack," the purported Taliban commander, who gave only one name, Omar, said by telephone from an undisclosed location. "He had set up a militia. He was supporting killings of our men. He was interfering in our matters." Omar, whose identity could not be confirmed, threatened to kill anyone who tried to create an anti-Taliban militia.

Khan Zamir was buying goats when the explosion ripped through the street.

"That place turned into hell where the dead and injured were lying everywhere, and blood and flesh were spread around," he said, adding that two of his relatives were badly wounded.

"Now we have our blood in this war," he said, vowing revenge against the attackers.

Militants have struck repeatedly in Pakistan in recent weeks, killing more than 300 civilians and soldiers in attacks aimed at weakening the government's resolve to continue the South Waziristan operation.

Pakistani troops have fought gunbattles in and around key Taliban towns in the region for several days. The latest fighting Sunday in the Taliban heartland killed 20 militants and wounded eight soldiers, an army statement said.

The military says hundreds of militants have been killed in the fighting — a claim the Taliban dismisses. The area is sealed, and the figures are impossible to verify.

About 350,000 people have fled the fighting.

HIT Al-Khalid Tank

The Al-Khalid is a modern main battle tank developed and manufactured by Pakistan for the Pakistan Army. Operated by a crew of three and armed with a 125 mm smooth-bore tank gun that is reloaded automatically, Al-Khalid uses a modern fire-control system integrated with night-fighting equipment to accurately fire many types of anti-tank rounds as well as guided anti-tank missiles. Al-Khalid is named after the legendary Muslim general Khalid bin al-Walid.

An evolution of Chinese and Soviet tanks, the Al-Khalid is considerably smaller and lighter than most Western main battle tanks. The design is based on the Chinese Type 90-II, which combined technologies from several Soviet/western tanks and is ultimately a descendant of the widely-produced Soviet T-54. The Al-Khalid is unusual in that it is was designed to be adaptable for manufacture, so that it can be easily integrated with a variety of foreign engines and transmissions. The current production variant of Al-Khalid utilises a diesel engine supplied by the KMDB design bureau of Ukraine.

The first production models entered service with the Pakistan Army in 2001 and there are plans to induct approximately 600 in total.

Kahuta Research Laboratories (KRL)

http://www.krl.com.pk/

Kahuta Research Laboratories (KRL) is a semi-civilian controlled weapon development and nuclear science research laboratoy. KRL is located at Kahuta, Punjab, Pakistan. Kahuta is the site of Pakistan's main nuclear weapons laboratory as well as an emerging centre for long-range missile development. The primary Pakistani fissile-material production facility is located at Kahuta, employing gas centrifuge enrichment technology to produce Highly Enriched Uranium [HEU].

Kahuta was initiated by then-Prime Minister of Pakistan Zulfikar Ali Bhutto under the stewardship of Lt. Gen. Zahid Ali Akbar. Chinese assistance in the development of gas centrifuges at Kahuta was indicated by the presence of Chinese technicians at the facility in the early 1980s but it is not confirmed. The uranium enrichment facility began operating in 1984, but suffered serious start up problems. Kahuta began producing HEU in 1986, and Pakistan's fabrication of weapons may have begun soon thereafter, with the HEU hexafluoride being made into uranium metal which was machined into weapon pits. By the late 1980s Pakistan began advertising its nuclear potential by publishing technical articles on centrifuge design, including a 1987 article co-authored by A. Q. Khan on balancing sophisticated ultracentrifuge rotors.

KRL Anza MANPADS

Anza (English: Lance) is a series of shoulder-fired, man-portable surface-to-air missiles produced by Pakistan. Guided by an infra-red homing seeker, Anza is used for low level air defence.

Anza is produced by Kahuta Research Laboratories (KRL), being one of the facility's main conventional weapons projects. Development was originally undertaken to eliminate dependence on importing expensive foreign systems.Various versions of the Anza are currently in service with the Pakistan Army, with the Mk-III version being the most recent. The Anza is also offered for export, Malaysia being its only known export customer after receiving 100 Anza Mk-I in 2002 and, later, a further 500 Anza Mk-II systems.

KRL Anza MK-I

* Anza Mk-I - The first MANPADS produced by Pakistan for use by the Pakistan Army. Development is believed to have been assisted by China and the design is similar to the HN-5B MANPADS.Approximately 1000 Anza Mk-I were produced between 1989-1998.

KRL Anza MK-II

* Anza Mk-II - A third generation MANPADS,believed to be based on the Chinese QW-1 MANPADS.Uses a dual-band, cross-scan infra-red homing seeker to counter decoy flares.Also believed to use American missile technology.Approximately 850 Anza Mk-II were produced between 1994-2004.

KRL Anza MK-III

* Anza Mk-III - Believed to be based on the Chinese QW-2 MANPADS,modifications made to meet Pakistan Army requirements include a new firing unit similar to the Russian 9K38 Igla MANPADS.All-aspect attack capability and improved ECCM capability. The minimum altitude of 10 m gives capability to attack very low flying helicopters and cruise missiles. Also has a vehicle-mounted launcher variant.

Pakistan in Chinese fighter jet deal

By Farhan Bokhari in Islamabad

Published: November 10 2009 08:16 | Last updated: November 10 2009 09:57

China has agreed to sell Pakistan at least 36 advanced fighter jets in a landmark deal worth as much as $1.4bn, according to Pakistani and western officials.

Beijing will supply two squadrons of the J-10 fighter jet in a preliminary agreement that could lead to more sales to Pakistan in the future, said a Pakistani official.

EDITOR’S CHOICE
Analysis: Pakistan needs a new world view - Nov-02

The official said Pakistan might buy “larger numbers” of the multi-role aircraft in the future, but dismissed reports that Pakistan had inked a deal to buy as many as 150 of the fighter jets.

Defence experts described the agreement with China as a landmark event in Pakistan’s defence relationship with the growing military power. China’s transition from a manufacturer of low-fighters to more advanced jets comparable to some western models is seen as evidence of Beijing’s growing strategic clout in Asia.

“This agreement should not simply be seen in the narrow context of Pakistan’s relations with China,” said Abdul Qayyum, a retired Pakistani general.

“There is a wider dimension. By sharing its advanced technology with Pakistan, China is ... also saying to the world that its defence capability is growing rapidly.”

China has supplied Pakistan with fighter jets for more than three decades. But Beijing has seldom supplied Pakistan’s air force with advanced fighter aircraft. Islamabad turned to France for Mirage fighter jets in the 1970s and to the US for F-16s in the 1980s.

Pakistan has a fleet of 45 F-16s, which are built by Lockheed Martin. The Pakistani air force is using the fighter jet in its campaign against militants in South Waziristan. The US has agreed to sell Islamabad another 18 new F-16s and about a dozen older versions of the aircraft.

Over the past decade, China and Pakistan have collaborated on building their first jointly produced advanced fighter jet, known as the JF-17, or “Thunder”. Pakistan is expected to roll out the first domestically built version of the Thunder within weeks.

Pakistan’s air force plans to purchase at least 250 of the Thunder fighters over the next four to five years. Experts see the new Pakistani focus on China as a supplier of advanced fighters as evidence that Beijing is trying to expand its military power.

“Countries like Iran and possibly some of the Middle Eastern countries would be keen to deal with China if they can find technology which is comparable to the west,” said one western official in Islamabad.

“Pakistan will work as the laboratory to try out Chinese aircraft. If they work well with the Pakistani air force, others will follow.”

never support extremists thinking you can control them for your own agenda, too dangerous and unpredictable.

zero tolerance for state within a state. The pakis have allowed taliban too much autonomy in NW frontier for far too long.

Its interesting now to see how the pakis can take NWF back thru both military actions and handling the civilians.

Bombings at security offices kill at least 10 in Pakistan

Pakistani soldiers at the destroyed Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) building after a bomb blast in Peshawar.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan: Bombs tore through security offices in northwest Pakistan on Friday, killing at least 10 people and heavily damaging the Peshawar headquarters of the country's top intelligence agency.

The latest assaults on Pakistan's police and intelligence agents come with the military pressing its most ambitious offensive to date against homegrown Taliban networks in the lawless tribal belt on the Afghan border.

The Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) building in the northwestern city was heavily damaged in the blast, with huge clouds of smoke spewing into the sky and debris littering the ground, witnesses said.

The building was almost destroyed and the road littered with debris and tree trunks ripped off by the force of the explosion in Peshawar, which lies on the edge of Pakistan's lawless tribal belt infested with Al-Qaeda and Taliban.

The United States has put Pakistan on the frontline of its war against Al-Qaeda and has been increasingly disturbed by deteriorating security in the country where attacks and bombings have killed about 2,500 people in 28 months.

"Seven people have died and 35 are wounded," Sahib Zada Anis, head of the northwestern city's administration, told reporters in Peshawar.

Most of them were civilians, he added. A doctor at the city's main Lady Reading Hospital confirmed the casualties.

A security official said it was a bomb blast, but it was not immediately clear whether the explosives were planted in a vehicle, elsewhere, or detonated by a suicide bomber.

An AFP reporter saw at three bodies lying on the ground, but soldiers opened fire into the air preventing other people from approaching until army vehicles arrived and cordoned off the area.

Television footage showed scenes of panic at one hospital, with blood-stained men being admitted and relatives starting to gather outside.

A second bomb ripped through a suburban police station in the garrison city of Bannu, southwest of Peshawar, killing three policemen and wounding five others, police said.

"It appears to be a suicide attack, Bakakhel police station building has been damaged very badly, three policemen are dead and five others are injured," local police official Hameed Khan told AFP.

Peshawar, which runs into Pakistan's lawless tribal belt where US officials say Al-Qaeda are plotting attacks on the West and where Pakistani troops are pressing a major anti-Taliban offensive, is frequently hit by attacks.

The most devastating bomb attack in Pakistan in two years killed at least 118 people in a crowded market of Peshawar on October 28 as militants put ordinary civilians firmly in the crosshairs of their bloody campaign.

Pakistan's powerful and shadowy intelligence agencies have a history of supporting Islamist groups in a bid to counter rival India, but militant attacks have increasingly focused on domestic targets in the last two years.

Friday's Peshawar bombing was the first major attack outside an ISI installation since May, when a suicide attack on a police building in the city of Lahore killed 24 people beside its Punjab provincial headquarters.

The government blames increasing attacks on Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which is the target of the ongoing offensive and which wants to avenge the killing of their leader Baitullah Mehsud by a US missile in August.

Friday's bombing comes after stiff Taliban resistance killed at least 17 Pakistani soldiers Thursday in the military's deadliest day since launching a major offensive in South Waziristan, security officials said.

Pakistan has pressed around 30,000 forces, backed by war planes and attack helicopters, into battle in a US-endorsed mission to wipe out the chief strongholds of Tehreek-e-Taliban in the tribal district of South Waziristan.

On Tuesday, a Taliban spokesman told AFP by telephone from an undisclosed location that the militia had embarked on a guerrilla war from the mountains of South Waziristan and would attack cities as a matter of course.

"The attacks in cities are a part of our permanent strategy. These attacks will continue and we will attack everyone who wants to harm us," said the spokesman, Azam Tariq.

Suicide Attack: Leaves 12 dead, 25 injured in Peshawar
Pakistan Times NWFP Bureau

PESHAWAR: A suicide car bomber detonated his explosive laden vehicle at Pishtakharra Police Check Post – while trying to enter Peshawar cantonment – putting to death at least 12 persons including a police constable and two children and injuring almost over 25 others.

Police chief Liaquat Ali Khan has confirmed the digit of the deaths in yet another tragedy which took place in the metropolis of the North West Frontier Province [NWFP] of Pakistan on Saturday.

The police officials showed bravery by stopping the car at the check post on suspicion for search, the City Police Chief said, adding, had the bomber entered the Peshawar he would have wrecked havoc in city.

The bomber exploded himself up while he was stopped by the Police personnel at the check post for search. Prior to detonating explosive laden vehicle, the bomber had a brief chat with the policeman at the check post, the CCPO said.

The official of the Bomb Disposal Squad maintained that 50 to 60 kilogram explosive was used in the explosion.

The NWFP Governor Owais Ahmed Ghani and Chief Minister Ameer Haider Khan Hoti have strongly condemned the suicide car bomb blast at Police Check Post Pishtakhara Saturday afternoon. They expressed their deep shock and sorrow over the loss of precious lives. They described the incident a highly cowardly act of terrorism.

In their separate condolence messages here Saturday, the Governor and Chief Minister said the incident itself speaks the barbaric and retrogressive mindset of the miscreants involved in such inhuman acts of extremism.

Targeting security forces and killing innocent citizens speaks the state of frustration, the elements are suffered with. Such elements, they added, are the enemies of the country and they would never succeed in their nefarious designs.

While expressing their heartfelt sympathies with members of the bereaved families, the Governor has assured that the elements involved in such heinous crimes would be brought to justice shortly. They also called upon the people to fully cooperate with the law enforcement agencies and ensure lasting peace in the area.

They also prayed for eternal peace of the departed souls, courage to the bereaved families to bear the irreparable loss with patience and early recovery of the injured.

Provincial Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain in a statement also condemned the Pishtakharra blast in strong words and expressed the resolve that war against terror would continue till total elimination of the terrorists.

Terrorists are neither Muslim nor human beings, he said, adding, after such brutal activities by the terrorists, it has become now more necessary to crush them from their roots. No matter what price we pay for it but we will continue to hit them in their bases, he maintained.

God forbid, if we failed, these people (terrorists) would retrieve dead bodies from the graves, would lash the women and humiliate the females which would be more dangerous, Mian Iftikhar added. Defeat is no option with us we have to beat them at any cost, he remarked.

Provincial Information Minister said the example of Malakand was before us, we offered sacrifices and never succumbed to any pressure of the terrorists and with the blessing of Allah Almighty, today Malakand was safe and sound.

Mian Iftikhar who is vocal when asked by a reporter that how long the people would offer sacrifices in war on terror, replied that as long as they (terrorists) were not totally eliminated. They are targeting Peshawar because the government in the Province was fully supporting the military operation against them.

He said that Waziristan has become hub of the international terrorists who were here since long. To a question about presence of foreigners in the Tribal Belt, he asked why these elements do not Jihad in Iraq and Palestine why they have selected the land of Pukhtoons for their terrorist acts. The answer is very simple because Pukhtoons are simple, poor and religious minded nation, he added. That is why they were easily trapped in the hands of terrorists.

An earlier report had said that at least five persons were killed and fifteen others injured in a powerful bomb blast near Pishtakhara Police check-post near Ring Road on Saturday, police official confirmed.

District Coordination Officer (DCO) Peshawar had confirmed the death of five persons.Soon after the blast, the police and the security official cordoned off the area, while the injured were shifted to Lady Reading Hospital. Emergency has been declared in hospitals.

The Pishtakhara area situated in suburbs of Peshawar and a main entrance to the provincial capital from Bara, Khyber Agency. The police also confirmed that a car loaded with explosive hit the police check-post, killing five persons and injuring fifteen others, mostly deputed at the check-post.

The blast was so heavy which also injured the people roaming nearby the check-post besides, damaging vehicles on the main Ring Road.

President, PM condemn

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani Saturday strongly condemned the terrorist attack at Pushtakhara, in the outskirts of Peshawar.

The two leaders expressed their deep sorrow and grief over the loss of lives and said the government will speed up efforts to wipe out extremists and terrorists from the country.

In separate messages the two leaders expressed their resolve not to be deterred by terrorist attacks.

The President and the Prime Minister expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and prayed to Allah Almighty to shower his blessings on the departed souls and grant courage to their families to bear this loss.

They also directed best possible medical treatment for the injured.

The Prime Minister in a separate message expressed his deep sorrow over the tragic death of son of former Inspector General of Punjab Police Shaukat Javed.

I also wonder why taliban bomb markets full of women and children. Won't that make the people hate them?
Maybe its part of the hearts and minds program by the govt who planted these bombs to discredit the taliban. This will be a very effective strategy.

Pakistan Times NWFP Bureau

At least 46 dead in Pakistan bomb attacks

Firefighters work to put out a fire, after two explosions ripped through a crowded market in the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore.

LAHORE, Pakistan: Bomb blasts tore through two of Pakistan's main cities on Monday killing at least 46 people and wounding more than 100 as the nation struggles to quell a worsening Taliban insurgency.

Two blasts devastated a busy market and engulfed it in flames killing at least 36 people in Lahore, the capital of Punjab province, while in the northwest provincial capital of Peshawar a suicide bomber killed 10 people.

Attacks blamed on Islamist militants have surged this year as Pakistan presses military offensives against the Taliban across the northwest, under fierce US pressure to do more to destroy the extremists' strongholds.

The popular Moon Market in the centre of eastern Lahore city was transformed into a scene of flames and rubble as night fell on Monday, when two bombs exploded 30 seconds apart outside a police station and a bank, officials said.

"There were two blasts, at least 36 people were killed," doctor Rizwan Naseer, the head of Lahore's rescue service, told reporters. He put the number of wounded at 95.

Lahore police chief Muhammad Pervez Rathore put the death toll slightly lower, while bodies were still being pulled from the rubble.

"Twenty-seven people are confirmed dead but the death toll may rise. A total of 137 people were injured," he said. "The blasts knocked out the electricity. Fire engulfed the whole of the market.

"We fear there are still dead bodies inside."

Cultural hub Lahore is a city of nearly eight million people, and is increasingly in the Taliban's cross-hairs with five previous militant strikes this year killing more than 70 people.

The city of Peshawar in the northwest has borne the brunt of Taliban attacks avenging the operations against them, and was struck again around midday Monday when a suicide bomber in a rickshaw approached a district courthouse.

"He got down and tried to enter the building but could not do so because of our security arrangements," said Bashir Bilor, a senior provincial minister.

The bomber then detonated about six kilogrammes of explosives, killing 10 people including a policeman and wounding 44 others, said Zafar Iqbal, a senior doctor at Peshawar's main Lady Reading hospital.

Local television showed images of blackened sandals lying in pools of water on a charred road, as smoke and flames filled the streets.

"I was sitting outside the court when I heard a deafening blast," lawyer Rashid Hussain told AFP.

"I rushed to the spot and saw dead and injured laying on the ground. It was really horrible, there were body parts and the injured were crying for help."

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani swiftly condemned both bombings, deploring "the loss of innocent lives", a statement from his office said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for either attack, but a fierce Islamist insurgency has killed more than 2,600 people in attacks mostly blamed on the Taliban in the last two-and-a-half years.

October and early November saw a fierce surge in attacks, including a huge suicide car bombing on October 28 that ripped through a Peshawar market killing 125 people in the worst attack in Pakistan in two years.

There had been a lull in attacks in recent weeks, then on Friday four suicide bombers stormed a mosque in Islamabad's twin city Rawalpindi, killing 36 people in an onslaught of gunfire, grenades and explosions.

Pakistan's military is engaged in offensives against Islamist fighters across much of the northwest including the tribal areas bordering Afghanistan, a region branded by Washington as the most dangerous place on Earth.

The tribal belt has been plagued by instability for years, exacerbated in 2001 when a US-led invasion ousted the Taliban regime from Afghanistan, sending hundreds of Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked militants into the lawless region.

Officials said Pakistani troops killed 10 suspected insurgents in operations in northwest Swat valley and the tribal district of Bajaur on Monday, as the military pressed on with its attempts to dismantle Taliban strongholds.

Washington and London are however pressuring Pakistan to do more to capture Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and prevent militants crossing the border and targeting foreign troops stationed in Afghanistan. - AFP/de

Brazil to Sell SEAD Missiles to Pakistan

03-Dec-2008 15:00 EST

(Anti-radiation missiles) are designed to find, home in on, and destroy enemy air defense radars; they are often carried by specialist aircraft that accompany air strikes to perform the SEAD (Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses) mission. In December 2008, Brazil’s government approved a $108 million April 2008 contract with Pakistan for 100 of Mectron’s MAR-1 anti-radiation missiles. DID sources add that the deal needed the Brazilian government’s loan guarantee to become effective.

In contrast with other Mectron Engenharia missiles, such as the MAA-1 SRAAM or the forthcoming A-Darter partnership, Mectron appears to be working hard to avoid publicity for the MAR-1. The firm would not even acknowledge the missile’s existence for many years, and details remain sketchy. Pictures like this one show a MAR-1 that appears to be similar in size to counterparts like Raytheon’s AGM-88 HARM, and has a reported range of 25 km when launched from an altitude of about 33,000 feet/ 10 km. Testing appears to have ended, and it will equip Brazil’s upgraded AMX and F-5BR aircraft once it is accepted into service.

The recent massacre perpetrated in Mumbai, India has complicated Brazil’s approval announcement. As attention is drawn to the role Pakistan’s intelligence agency has played in this and other attacks, Brazil’s Defense Minister Nelson Jobim has been forced to respond: Brazil negotiates with Pakistan, not with Pakistani terrorists… To cancel this deal would be to attribute terrorist activities to the Pakistani government.

Brazil’s friends in India are already doing that, of course. On the other hand, Brazil needs export customers in order to achieve its national goal of re-building its defense industries. Jobim has been quoted as saying that the deal will allow Mectron to increase its production from 1 missile per month to 5 missiles. A sale to Pakistan, followed by integration into a platform like the Pakistani-Chinese JF-17 lightweight fighter, could also open up a number of new markets for Mectron.

Islamabad (ANTARA News) - Pakistan melakukan uji-coba penembakan rudal jarak menengah, demikian laporan kantor berita resmi negeri itu Associated Press of Pakistan (APP).

Grup Rudal Strategis (SMG) di Komando Pasukan Strategis Angkatan Darat Pakistan (ASFC) berhasil melakukan peluncuran pelatihan Rudal Balitik Jarak Dekat (IRBM) Ghuari (Hatf V), kata APP.

Ghauri IRBM memiliki jangkauan 1.300 kilometer.

Bomber Kills at Least 75 at Volleyball Game in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD —  Police say the death toll has hit 75 in a car bombing at a volleyball tournament in northwest Pakistan.

Local police chief Ayub Khan said Friday's blast in Lakki Marwat was retaliation for locals' attempts to expel militants by setting up their own militia. He says 75 people are confirmed dead.

He says more than 60 people are being treated at local hospitals.

The vehicle exploded on a playing field in the northwest of the country that has been rattled by bloodshed since the army launched a military offensive against Taliban fighters in the South Waziristan tribal region. The operation has scattered insurgents but provoked apparent reprisal attacks that have killed more than 500 people since October.

"The locality has been a hub of militants. Locals set up a militia and expelled the militants from this area. This attack seems to be reaction to their expulsion," Khan told reporters.

He said the bomber drove onto the field, which lies in a congested neighborhood, during the volleyball contest. Some nearby houses collapsed, and "we fear that some 10 or so people might have been trapped in the rubble," Khan said.

SLIDESHOW: Bomber Strikes Volleyball Game.

Another police official, Habib Khan, said some 300 people were on the field when the blast went off.

Also Friday, a suspected U.S. missile struck a car carrying alleged militants in North Waziristan tribal region, killing three men, two intelligence officials said. It was the second such strike in less than a day.

The strikes are part of the U.S. campaign to eliminate high-value militant targets that use Pakistan as a safe haven to plan attacks in neighboring Afghanistan and on the West.

Friday's strike happened near Mir Ali, a major town in the region, two intelligence officials said on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak on the record. Shortly afterward, Taliban fighters arrived at the scene of the attack in the village of Ghundi and moved the bodies to an undisclosed location, the officials said.

Thursday's missile strike was also near Mir Ali, hitting a house and killing three people.

U.S. officials rarely discuss the strikes, and Pakistan publicly condemns them, though it is widely believed to aid them secretly.

Karachi, the country's largest city, came to a virtual standstill Friday after religious and political leaders called for a general strike to protest a bombing that killed 44 people and subsequent riots.

The city's major markets, stores and business centers were closed, along with financial institutions that had already planned to shut because of New Year's Day. Public transportation was halted and gas stations were shut down.

Monday's bombing occurred in the midst of a procession of minority Shiite Muslims during the Islamic holy month of Muharram. Afterward, angry protesters went on a rampage, setting fires to about 2,000 stores that took three days to completely put out.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik, on a visit to Karachi, said investigators were still determining if the attack was a suicide bombing.

He also questioned the claim of a purported Taliban spokesman, Asmatullah Shaheen, that the militant group was behind the attack. Local news reports on Friday quoted a more prominent Taliban spokesman, Azam Tariq, as denying that the Pakistani Taliban's central leadership had approved the attack, though he did not rule out the possibility that Shaheen's group had carried it out without approval.

Elsewhere in the northwest, a roadside bomb exploded near a car in the Bajur tribal region, killing an anti-Taliban tribal elder and five of his family members, said Nasib Shah, a local government official.

Bajur was the focus of a 2008-09 army offensive but still suffers some militant violence. Tribal leaders who support the government against the Taliban are frequent targets of attacks.
