Posters of deities with image of US music legend anger Hindu group
A Hindu organisation in Penang wants the authorities to take immediate steps to prevent the use of images of deities in popular culture.
The Penang Hindu Association (PHA) has taken offence to the sale and distribution of posters showing the head of American music legend Jimi Hendrix superimposed on the body of the Hindu deities of Lord Vishnu, Shiva and Brahma.
PHA deputy president P. Murugiah said he was told about 10 posters were sold during the Big Bad Wolf book sale at the Penang Times Square last March, at RM29 each.
He said posters, from the United States, were imported by Bookxcess Sdn Bhd, the company that organised the book sale.
"We condemn the production, distribution and sales of such posters and other items produced in similar offensive manner.
"We urge the Home Ministry, the Prime Minister's Department and Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs and all relevant authorities to take stern action against importers, distributors and those involved in producing, printing, publishing or marketing such items that can offend, humiliate and insult any religion directly or indirectly,” he told the media today.
Murugiah also called on the government to impose penalties against those responsible for such deeds, and to confiscate and ban the offensive items. He said the same image on the poster had been produced on a 1997 Jimi Hendrix album cover, t-shirts and other merchandise like shoes and guitar picks. "Purchasing and owning this sort of posters, and supporting the distributors or importers of such defaming posters will only encourage other artists to come up with similar designs... it may end in chaos," he said.
Murugiah added that PHA wrote a letter to the home minister on the posters and learned that raids had been conducted in warehouses in Johor and the Klang Valley.
When contacted, a spokesperson from the home ministry's Publication Control and Quranic Text Division said enforcement officers had seized similar Jimi Hendrix posters last month during routine checks conducted on agents, who import printed materials into the country.
"The ministry acts on all publications that can be sensitive to any component of our society, regardless of their race and religion. If it is under our jurisdiction, the ministry will surely act," she said. She added that agents caught with such materials were issued warnings not to repeat the offence or face fines. – June 4, 2014.
