TBY talks to HE Didier Reynders, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belgium, on ties between the two nations.
There is a growing Belgian business community in Malaysia. What attracts these companies to set up regional offices here, and what opportunities does the Malaysian market present?
There are currently approximately 385 Belgians registered in Malaysia and we hope to reach the cap of 400 this year. The overall majority of the Belgian community resides in Malaysia for business reasons. Different assets of the country attract them. Firstly, Malaysia has a unique geographical location: centrally positioned in South East Asia, the country is an ideal hub for the ASEAN region as well as the Far East. The Strait of Malacca is a vital artery for the world's international trade. Malaysia boasts an open economy, which attracts many foreign investors, including Belgians. Moreover, the country is also an important producer of commodities, notably palm oil and crude oil and gas. These two commodities have given rise to a strong petrochemical and oleochemical sector in Malaysia, in which our Belgian companies actively participate. Last but not least, Malaysia is a country where all these business strengths are combined with a good quality of life. Malaysia prides itself in being a moderate country with good living standards, two key factors for attracting foreign talent and businesses. If the country upholds the essential values of tolerance and moderation, future foreign investments will be secured.
How do you see bilateral relations between the two countries evolving in the coming years and in which particular areas will cooperation efforts be focused?
Our bilateral relations go back to the founding of the Federation of Malaya in 1957 and even before. They have been excellent during all these decades. During the Economic Mission in November last year, Belgium has sent a clear message that it “meant business” with Malaysia and that we're ready to take our bilateral relations to the next level. Our trade has been increasing year-by-year and stood at EUR1.3 billion in 2014. Our healthy trade relations remain our primary focus, but also provide solid bedrock for further expansion of our relations.

Belgium firm to invest RM704mil to build Asia’s largest lime plant in Tapah
KUALA LUMPUR: Belgium-based Lhoist is investing 170 million euros (RM704.17mil) as part of the first phase of its business expansion in Malaysia and the region. The privately-held industrial firm, a leading lime producer with an annual turnover of 2 billion euros, acquired its first limestone quarry near Ipoh, Perak, in 2007 and a limestone producer in 2013. The company plans to build Asia’s largest lime plant in Tapah, Perak, a research and support centre and a regional office in Kuala Lumpur. Lhoist (M) Sdn Bhd general manager Michel Bruyere said the Tapah plant would be operational in 2016. “We’re now at the earth-piling stage,” he told StarBiz on the sidelines following the official visit of Princess Astrid of Belgium to the company’s office.Lhoist vice-president public affairs Jean Marbehant said the company chose Malaysia as its hub because it was a stable central country and had an open economy compared with other countries in South-East Asia. Besides the financial investment, Bruyere said the company would bring in experienced engineers to develop local human capital. He pointed out that there would be a transfer of advanced technology to Malaysia that would enhance the know-how of local people. Lhoist director Mohd Sarthar Sulaiman said the company would hire local talents and give opportunities to local entrepreneurs. Lhoist aims to reach a total production of 650,000 tonnes of lime from its quarries by 2016. The company will employ up to 350 people, including 60 in the Kuala Lumpur office. “We’ll export 80% of our production to South-East Asia and India, with the remainder for local consumption,” Bruyere said. He added that the company had already secured contracts within Asean to export 80% of its production. Founded 125 years ago, Lhoist operates about 90 plants in over 25 countries and has a workforce of 6,000.
