Trump acquired the Miss Universe Organization in 1996.
And I've been hearing about sash and how Miss Universe is bias towards some countries. So let's put some rationale by looking at the statistics in the past 17 years:

(By placement, I mean inclusion in the Semi-Finalist; this is the first cut after the preliminary)
Needless to say, these are the heavy favorites every year. I guess these are the countries with the STRONGEST sash. These are the highest 13:

I was surprised to find out South Africa even has a stronger sash than Brazil and Colombia. I've always thought Colombia and Brazil send stronger candidates.

These are the countries who made it to the semi-finalist and successfully cracked the finals. So when you hear these countries being called as a semi-finalist, expect that they will survive the next cut.

AUSTRALIA - 6 out of 6 times
PHILIPPINES - 4 out of 4 times
DOMINICAN REPUBLIC - 4 out of 4 times
PARAGUAY - 2 out of 2 times

This is a testament to countries which may not be consistent in sending the best candidates every year but when they send someone strong, the candidates are really KILLER CANDIDATES on a mission to snag the crown. So when these countries make it to the finalist, they are sure to place as runner ups or win it all.

In the past 17 years, there were 227 semi-finalist spots. The impression is South and North Americans are the ones mostly in the MU semis... NOT TRUE, if you look at the number of placements per continent, it's actually:
#1 EUROPE: 72 placements (32%)
Country with most missosology spots: RUSSIA (with 8 )
I think we just notice it because the spots are spread over more countries whereas with the Americas, it's spread only to 2 or 3 countries (the countries with highest sash: Venezuela, US, Puerto Rico)
#2 NORTH AMERICA: 57 (25%)
Country with most missosology spots: USA (with 14)
As I wrote above, the concentration of missosology spots is limited to select countries: US, Puerto Rico (which if you think about it is also part of the US) and Mexico
#3 SOUTH AMERICA: 43 placements (19%)
Country with most missosology spots: VENEZUELA (with 14)
The 2 countries following Venezuela didn't even come close (Brazil and Colombia with 7 each)
#4 ASIA & AUSTRALIA: 34 placements (15%)
Country with most missosology spots: INDIA (with 11)
Australia (with 6), Philippines (with 4) and Japan (with 4) didn't even come close. I'm really wondering what it is in their delegates that MU seems to buy. I'm a big fan of Sushmita but I think the best delegates from India are all being sent to MW and not MU (Aishwarya, Priyanka, Diana). I'm hoping to see Koreans improve their ranking soon because they really have gorgeous women!
#5 AFRICA: 21 placements (9%)

Actually there are only two African countries with multiple placements. The other one is Angola (with 4).
What's surprising to me is the placements are spread out as I thought. Everyone seems to think that there are a lot of countries who have failed to place in the years when Trump took over. On the contrary, 73 out of the usual 82 countries have actually received at least ONE missosology spot in the past 17 years. Which countries haven't had a placement yet? The obvious ones: Hong Kong, Singapore, British Virgin Islands, Mauritius... but still a small number
So did you notice any country who got weaker/stronger after Trump took over MUO?
For me, Russia (and other countries which were part of the USSR) and India seemed to be doing better. It may be because they're sending stronger candidates or maybe the taste level has also changed.

So, I researched some facts about Miss Universe, and got interested in tallying the countries which have not placed in the pageant for the last two to six decades. I hope that the figures I gathered were right. I arranged the countries by the year they joined in the pageant (for those which have never placed) and by their last placement (for those which have placed but have experienced "severe" drought for several years now. So here is the Top 15!
