Libya 2011 Libya Bodies Found in Abandoned Tripoli Hospital 26th August, 2011 : Hundreds of dead bodies were found in a Tripoli hospital that was abandoned after being surrounded by clashes between rebels and Gaddafi's forces. People who had sustained injuries were taken to the hospital for treatment but nearly all of the staff had fled and the people had been left in the hospital to die. Seventeen survivors were found within the hospital.

More than 200 decomposing bodies were discovered at an abandoned Tripoli hospital Friday, the BBC reported.

A BBC correspondent found the bodies of men, women and children on beds and in the corridors of a hospital in the Abu Salim district of the capital. He said doctors and nurses fled the facility after clashes erupted nearby between rebel forces and those loyal to Moammar Kadafi.

It was not clear how the people died, the BBC reported. A Reuters photographer reported that some of the bodies were rebels who had been executed by Kadafi forces, but that could not be independently confirmed.
There were hundreds of bodies around the hospital, on gurneys and in corridors, the BBC correspondent said. Some appeared to be civilians, some fighters, some African mercenaries, he said.

Residents in the nearby neighborhood said some of the dead had been alive when they were brought to the hospital, some seriously injured. Others had already died, they told the BBC.

After the hospital closed, some patients were left to die, residents said.

"These bodies have been here in the hospital for five days. Nobody has taken care of them -- to bring them to the mortuary, to identify them, to bury them," Osama Pilil, who lives near the hospital, told the BBC.

On Friday, locals were cleaning and trying to reopen the hospital, but it was a daunting task, Pilil said.

"We need help. It is very urgent. There is no government here. We need professional help, from the International Red Cross, because there has been a massacre in Abu Salim," Pilil said.

so sad!!!!

TODAY IN HISTORY - Krakatau Explodes

The most powerful volcanic eruption in recorded history occurs on Krakatau (also called Krakatoa), a small, uninhabited volcanic island located west of Sumatra in Indonesia, on this day in 1883. Heard 3,000 miles away, the explosions threw five cubic miles of earth 50 miles into the air, created 120-foot tsunamis and killed 36,000 people.

Krakatau exhibited its first stirrings in more than 200 years on May 20, 1883. A German warship passing by reported a seven-mile high cloud of ash and dust over Krakatau. For the next two months, similar explosions would be witnessed by commercial liners and natives on nearby Java and Sumatra. With little to no idea of the impending catastrophe, the local inhabitants greeted the volcanic activity with festive excitement.

On August 26 and August 27, excitement turned to horror as Krakatau literally blew itself apart, setting off a chain of natural disasters that would be felt around the world for years to come. An enormous blast on the afternoon of August 26 destroyed the northern two-thirds of the island; as it plunged into the Sunda Strait, between the Java Sea and Indian Ocean, the gushing mountain generated a series of pyroclastic flows (fast-moving fluid bodies of molten gas, ash and rock) and monstrous tsunamis that swept over nearby coastlines. Four more eruptions beginning at 5:30 a.m. the following day proved cataclysmic. The explosions could be heard as far as 3,000 miles away, and ash was propelled to a height of 50 miles. Fine dust from the explosion drifted around the earth, causing spectacular sunsets and forming an atmospheric veil that lowered temperatures worldwide by several degrees.

Of the estimated 36,000 deaths resulting from the eruption, at least 31,000 were caused by the tsunamis created when much of the island fell into the water. The greatest of these waves measured 120 feet high, and washed over nearby islands, stripping away vegetation and carrying people out to sea. Another 4,500 people were scorched to death from the pyroclastic flows that rolled over the sea, stretching as far as 40 miles, according to some sources.

In addition to Krakatau, which is still active, Indonesia has another 130 active volcanoes, the most of any country in the world.

TODAY IN HISTORY - 1963: Martin Luther King's dream for racial harmony

The fight for racial equality in the United States moved a step closer to victory today as Martin Luther King spoke of his dream for freedom in an address to thousands of Americans.

Reverend King was greeted with rapturous applause as he delivered his heart-felt words to a 250,000-strong crowd of civil rights protesters at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC.

He spoke of the need "to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice".

He promised that the struggle for equality would continue until "justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream".

Rev King, who has worked tirelessly for an end to racial discrimination through non-violent means, spoke repeatedly of his dream for equality.

"I have a dream," he said. "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character.

"I have a dream today.

"I have a dream that one day every valley shall be engulfed, every hill shall be exalted and every mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plains and the crooked places will be made straight and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together."

Dr King, who is president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) first came to prominence in 1955 when he led a 382-day bus boycott in an attempt to end segregation on city buses.

Since then he has endured numerous arrests, violent harrassment and a bomb attack on his home.

But his struggle continues and it is believed today's speech will have a lasting impact on all who heard it.

U.S. 1955 U.S.A. Emmett Till Murder Aug. 28, 1955 :
Emmett Till, a black fourteen year old teenager from Chicago, is abducted from his uncle's home in Money, Miss. after he was accused of disrespect to a local store owner Carolyn Bryant. He was found three days later, he had been badly beaten and his eye had been gouged out, before he was shot through the head and thrown into the Tallahatchie River.

emmets' mom during funeral

On August 28, 1955, two white men beat to death Emmet Till, a fourteen-year-old African-American boy from Chicago who was visiting relatives in Mississippi.  Till had reportedly flirted (events are disputed) with the white wife of one of the murderers at a local grocery store. The killing took place four nights after the incident at Bryant's Grocery and Meat Market, when Bryant's husband Roy and his half-brother J. W. Milam, broke into the home where Till was staying and drove him to a barn, where they beat him, gouged out one of his eyes, and shot him, the dropped his body in the Tallahatchie River.  His body was discovered three days later.

At Till's public funeral in Chicago, and in images appearing across the nation, thousands saw Till's severely mutilated body, drawing attention to the problem of lynching and new support for protection of civil rights for blacks in the Deep South.  Bryant and Milam were tried for the murder of till in late 1955, but acquitted by an all-white Mississippi jury. Protected by the double jeopardy clause, Bryant and Milam admitted killing Till in a 1956 magazine interview.  The widely publicized trial is considered apivotal event in the Civil Rights Movement.
