Petik dari NST
BUKIT MERTAJAM: Mohd Noor Mohd Mustafa, shot dead along with the leader of Joe Mafia gang, Ahmad Fairuz Adam, by police, here, on Thursday, was determined to escape as he was facing a murder trial.
Mohd Noor @ Boy, 28, was believed to be making his way to Thailand with Ahmad Fairuz, 31, who had relatives there, when they were intercepted by police.
In the shootout which ensued in Padang Ibu, Guar Perahu, here, both hardcore criminals were shot dead.
The duo had split up with Mohd Noor's cousin, Mohd Shahrimy Mohd Noor, 28, and two other gang members Hamzani Harun, 37, and Hissham Abdul Rahman, 39, who are still at large.
The other two fugitives, Farid Akhtar, 24, and Mohd Khairul Nizam Abdul Rani, 26, have no connection with the gang and had gone their separate ways after the seven staged a daring escape by overpowering four policemen who were taking them to the Butterworth court complex on Monday.
Police believe that Ahmad Fairuz and Mohd Noor, who were travelling in a Proton Perdana, were on their way to fetch the other three gang members before fleeing to Thailand.
Mohd Noor and Mohd Shahrimy, both from Penanti, had been charged with the murder of an Internet cafe customer at Taman Serumpun, Berapit in Bukit Mertajam in November 2011.In the incident, the duo had splashed curry powder on the outlet's cashier before grabbing RM870 from the cash register. One of the customers had tried to stop the suspects and was stabbed in the abdomen in an ensuing scuffle. The 37-year-old victim succumbed to his injuries later and police subsequently identified Mohd Noor and Mohd Shahrimy from the closed-circuit television camera footage at the premises. Police nabbed the cousins last year and they were charged with murder.
Since it was a non-bailable offence, the duo were detained at the Penang Prison throughout the trial, where they later regrouped with the gang leader, Ahmad Fairuz.
It is learnt that Ahmad Fairuz was charged with a spate of armed robbery cases at Internet cafes in the Seberang Perai Tengah and Seberang Perai Utara districts, together with Hamzani and Hissham. Sources said the gang had graduated from petty crimes such as drug abuse, burglary and motorcycle thefts to armed robbery in 2011.
In the 8.30am incident on Monday, the gang and two other remand prisoners created a ruckus while being taken to the Butterworth court, forcing the police van driver to pull over after passing the Butterworth Outer Ring Road (BORR) toll plaza in Bagan Ajam. The gang threw chilli powder on the four policemen before kicking them out of the vehicle. They drove for 15km and abandoned the van at Kampung Padang Cempedak in Tasek Gelugor before fleeing into the oil palm estate, prompting police to mobilise the biggest manhunt operation in the state in recent years.
