After more than a year on the political back foot, Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak is striking back hard at his detractors.
Emboldened by a series of election victories over the last two months, the Premier has moved to purge his opponents to emerge stronger than he has been since taking over the premiership in April 2009.
In the last 10 days, Datuk Seri Najib has turned the tables on his political foes, who were seeking his ouster for his deep involvement in the fiasco at state-owned 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
First came the surprise announcement last week that the chief of the country's anti- corruption agency that led the corruption probe on 1MDB had decided to go into early retirement.
Mr Najib then trained his guns on the irritants in his ruling Umno, with the sacking of the party's current deputy president and former deputy premier Muhyiddin Yassin and Mukhriz Mahathir, the former chief minister of northern Kedah state and a son of former premier Mahathir Mohamad.

The latest is Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, who is also the secretary-general of the opposition Democratic Action Party (DAP). He was arrested yesterday ahead of his arraignment in court today on allegations of corruption.
"He (Najib) is flexing, telling those within his party and the opposition that he is in charge and will brook no nonsense," says Mr Ibrahim Suffian, of independent polling firm Merdeka Center, who adds that the Premier's political strategy is aimed at solidifying his grip over his ruling party and government
But the strikeback is set to widen the trust deficit the Najib administration suffers with ordinary Malaysians.
"This whole campaign doesn't give the impression that the institutions are completely impartial because people will compare what is happening to (Lim) Guan Eng with 1MDB and Najib," argues Mr Ibrahim, echoing a widely held view among political analysts.

Only a year ago, Mr Najib was nearly ejected from power when his opponents, led by Tan Sri Muhyiddin, came close to forcing him to resign on allegations of corruption over the financial dealings at 1MDB and another state-owned entity known as SRC International.
Amid shocking international media reports of flagrant financial shenanigans and corruption at 1MDB, the embattled Premier bought time by removing Mr Muhyiddin as his No. 2 and installing a close ally, Mr Mohamed Apandi Ali, to the powerful position of Attorney-General.
Since then, Tan Sri Apandi has cleared the Premier of any wrongdoing.
Internationally, however, 1MDB has become the single-biggest public relations disaster for Malaysia with a state-owned fund at the centre of probes in at least seven countries over a complex web of financial dealings that forced Singapore to close a branch of a Swiss bank over charges of money laundering.
Mr Najib's latest moves appear designed to send a message that he is in control. But they aren't doing much for his political prestige.

GEORGE TOWN (The Star/Asia News Network) - Road blocks have been set up and the public gallery at the courthouse is packed with people as Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng is due to be formally charged with graft on Thursday (June 30) morning, in a development that has jolted the country.
Mr Lim, who has demanded Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak explain a massive financial scandal linked to state investment fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), was arrested at his office on Wednesday by MACC officers.
He is alleged to have corruptly bought his house at a below-market-price of RM2.8 million (S$932,000) last year and improperly changed the use of public land to allow development. Mr Lim has vehemently denied the accusations.
After spending the night in MACC custody, he is expected to be taken to court at 10am on Thursday. But hours before his appearance, police had mounted roadblocks at Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah before the MACC building and Lebuh Farquhar near the Penang courthouse.

There was a bumper-to-bumper crawl from Jalan Pangkor to Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah, while traffic was slow on Lebuh Farquhar. Thousands of students and workers were late for school and work with the road closures.
The public gallery at the Penang Sessions Court was already full, with people arriving at the courthouse as early as 7.30am.
George Town OCPD Asst Comm Mior Faridalathrash Wahid, who was at the MACC building at around 7.45am, said roadblocks were mounted to ensure the smooth process of sending Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng to the court.
"We are not trying to cause trouble to the people but we have to do that for smooth court proceedings," he said.
He added that the police would also control the number of people entering the courthouse for the same reason.
Mr Lim, the 55-year-old son of veteran politician Lim Kit Siang, has been chief minister of Penang state since 2008 and has led the opposition Democratic Action Party (DAP) since 2004 as secretary-general.
DAP is the most popular ethnic Chinese party in Malaysia. It won 38 seats in the federal Parliament in the 2013 general election, forming the second-largest single bloc of MPs after Umno’s 88 seats.
Mr Lim was jailed for 12 months in 1998 after being found guilty for sedition.
His arrest on Wednesday followed three months of accusations by Umno leaders that Mr Lim had benefited in buying his bungalow on Penang island from businesswoman Ms Phang Li Khoon, and that she was allegedly involved in business deals with the state government that he leads.
Ms Phang was also arrested in Penang yesterday. She will also be charged in the Sessions Court in Penang on Thursday morning.

DAP leaders believe that the arrest of Penang Chief Minister on corruption charges means that the witch hunt on DAP is in full force, but that the arrest may just backfire on the government.
The arrest of Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng and Phang Li Koon, the one who sold him the bungalow, was unexpected, as the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission seemed to have moved in with speed on the investigations, since the issue was first raised early this year.
Lim, the DAP secretary-general, is expected to be charged in the George Town Sessions Court tomorrow under Section 23 of the MACC Act and Section 165 of the Penal Code.
The bungalow at Jalan Pinhorn in Georgetown made news when it was made public by Umno's Tasek Gelugor MP Datuk Shabudin Yahaya that Lim had bought it for a below-the-market RM2.8 million price from DAP member Phang.
Phang said then that she had offered it much earlier at that price but Lim had only bought it later at the same price, although the bungalow had increased in market value.
As the furore erupted, Lim even took the media for a stroll into his home, but a report was made to MACC and since then the case has been under investigations.
MACC was also at the same time investigating another case involving Lim and Phang, whose company Magnificiant Emblem Sdn Bhd had also requested to rezone a plot of agriculture land to commercial use. The application was rejected by the Penang City Council (MBPP).
When contacted DAP Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng says it is a case of ‘willing buyer willing seller’.
“We don’t see what is problem with that. This is an overplayed drama and we know that it has only escalated because the general election is around the corner.
“It will dent the party no doubt, especially with the rural areas as they rely on limited sources of news such the national television channels and government affiliated newspapers and this is how the voters will be influenced.
“This whole bungalow issue is just another ploy to put DAP in bad light. We don’t see why else they are pulling so much fuss over the bungalow issue.
“Because the Barisan Nasional has control over television channels and newspapers, people who follow these mediums will believe what is aired or published and will think that the Opposition is equally corrupted,” Lip Eng lamented.
Meanwhile, DAP Klang MP Charles Santiago says that it is too early to draw conclusions as to how the bungalow issue will impact DAP.
“We don’t know what are the charges yet, I don’t I can say anything for now. I don’t think we should be saying anything even if it is hypothetically spoken.
“But what I can say is that it is a witch hunt that is happening, going after the Penang Chief Minister.
“We can expect a few things to happen with the voters as it is normal for them to react negatively or place doubts on the party,” he says.
Santiago however is positive that the public will sympatise the party.
“Negative reactions are expected, but I think the public will take pity on DAP,” he adds.
