KOTA BARU: PAS has called for the government to consider using the "proportional representation" method that would result in a more free and fair elections.
PAS central election director Datuk Mustafa Ali (pic) said proportional representation, used in countries like Belgium, Indonesia, Germany and Turkey, would create a more peaceful process of deciding on a government.
“Here in Malaysia there is no such thing as free and fair election, there is no level playing field and that is why it's time for Malaysia to study the methods of elections," he said.
Mustafa explained that the proportional representation system would be based on popular votes and avoid situations of by-elections.
“Take for example in Kelantan here where we have 45 state seats. So if one party that contest gets 60 percent of the popular seats, then they would get 60 percent of the total seats in the state.
“So it is the best way to represent the people's choice and with those practicing this system, the competition is between the contesting parties and not the candidates.
“So they don't have things like by-elections. Only the general election.
“If the candidate dies, the party finds the next best candidate to replace that person," he said at the PAS annual general assembly on Friday.
He added that the method would avoid cases of gerry-meandering.
“This is to let the people know that there are other ways our elections can be done," he said.
