New Argentinian envoy’s goal to help Malaysian football
KUALA LUMPUR: Budding Malaysians dreaming to dazzle on the football pitch like Argentinian legend Diego Maradona may soon be able to pick up a trick or two.
Argentinian Ambassador-designate to Malaysia Manuel Balaguer Salas says he wants to also focus on football diplomacy here, and plans to get some coaching help for young Malaysians.
“This is one of my goals to further strengthen ties between our countries as we welcome our 50th anniversary of relations next year.
“Football is very popular in Malaysia, and you are just as passionate as the Argentinians,” he added.
Salas, who will present his credentials to the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong on July 18, said he was working on a football exchange programme between Argentina and Malaysia.
He said this will involve training programmes, adding that Malaysian youngsters would benefit from the exposure.
“This will not only be restricted to players. Coaches and staff members will also be involved,” said Salas, who admires Argentina’s River Plate football club and his country’s current soccer great, Lionel Messi.
The envoy has already tasted a measure of success here – in as far as football is concerned.
He was at the packed Stadium Shah Alam on May 14, proudly clad in his national team jersey, when Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) clinched the Malaysian FA Cup for the first time in a come-from-behind 2-1 win over PKNS.
There were five Argentine players on the field, with two playing for JDT. The coach of the winning team was also an Argentinian.
On other matters, Salas said Buenos Aires also wanted to further develop economic ties with Kuala Lumpur, citing the halal food sector as among the priorities.
He said he was working closely with Jakim and the Halal Development Centre to resume imports of Argentinian beef which was banned five years ago.
“Our abattoirs are required to fully adhere to the halal requirement,” he added.
Salas said one way to tackle this was to set up abattoirs in Argentina that catered solely to the halal industry.
“Malaysians can also invest and set up abattoirs there to help Argentina cater to the needs of the markets here,” he added.
