Heroine who fought against her fate
Lee young-ae
In any society, at any period, there is always someone who goes against the current of the times. Janggeum, who lived in the Joseon Dynasty when women's social participation was strictly forbidden is just that kind of person. Janggeum, who lived in the era of Jeongjong, the 11th king of Joseon Dynasty (1488-1544), was born into a humble family, became a palace cook preparing meals for the royal family, was somehow made a slave, but eventually appointed the king's attending physician.
Lee Young-ae, 32, will portray Janggeum's dramatic life in a 50-episode historical drama, "Great Janggeum" (Daejanggeum) on MBC.
"After reading the script, I was convinced that 'Great Janggeum' will be the best drama of my career," said Lee who is returning to the television after almost three years. It is the third time that she is starring in a historical drama.
"I am very nervous because acting in a historical drama is very difficult and I don't have much experience in these dramas. Sometimes I feel as if I am a rookie," Lee added.
Lee, however, has trained a long time for her part. She has worked with Lee Byoung-hoon, the director successful historical TV dramas, "Heo Jun" (2000, MBC) and "Sangdo" (2002, MBC).
Lee also learned cooking at the Institute of Korean Royal Cuisine for more realistic acting. "I learned to prepare Sinseonro, a dish traditionally prepared for the courts. I found out that the food decoration and arrangement in Sinseonro have special meanings. It was amazing," she said.
"Great Janggeum" will be aired Mondays and Tuesdays at 9:55 p.m. The series kicks off Sept. 15.

okay so they all grow up.
jang-geum is becoming an excellent cook but she's still kinda wild, not always obeying the rules and running around all the time.. the princess is sick and doesn't eat for many days so the kitchen people are pulling their hair out trying to figure out something for her to eat.. everytime they bring something to her she refuses to eat after a bite...
geum-young (hong ri na) goes to talk to jang-geum (lee young ae) who is making her fermented soybean pastes.. geum-young tastes one of the samples and comments how it doesn't stink like it usually does.. jang-geum tells her it's because she used sojoo (rice wine) to kill of the smell (or was it something else? anyways she used something unorthodox but brilliant).. then geum-young goes back to the kitchen and asks her mom if she can make the next meal for the princes.. so she makes something and the princess eats the whole thing.. it's because she added the same ingredient jang-geum used to kill of any smell... turns out princess was turned off by the smell of food.... the whole kitchen dept. gets rewarded and all the supervisiors are praising geum-young.. but geum-young mentions she was inspired by jang-geum's method..
it's a big celebration in the palace.. the king's birthday.. so they shipped in a precious gold bird from china or something to be used for the party.. geum-young is told to guard the bird for a couple of days.. she puts it in the cage but the cage door gets loose and the bird is gone the next morning.. geum-young gets all paniky.. and decides to sneak outside of the palace to ask her relative if he can find another gold bird for her.. (it's against the palace rule for the girls to leave w/out permission).. on her way to sneak out.. she runs into jang-geum who offers to help.. so the two sneak out together.. they go out and arrive at the relative's but he's gone for a few days so jang-geum offers to make a trip to her uncles (the funny guy who raised her after she was 8) to see if he can help since he's well versed in imported goods.. so they part and decide to meet the next morning... jang-geum finds a bird after a lot of trouble but on her way to the relatives to meet up with geum-young she runs into a couple of people fighting.. and she decides to save the injured person (min jung-ho a.k.a ji jin hee ).. so she gets to the relatives really late and geum-young is already gone.. not because she wants to but her mom found out about the incident and forced her to leave w/out.. they also found a gold bird..
jang-geum has to sneak back in the palace all by herself but the route she used to escape was sealed off so she's stuck outside the palace and gets caught by the guards who take her to the kitchen dept..

Chang Jin tu tak jadi pelayan lagi dah..dia sepatutnya kena ousted dari palace sbb balik lambat ke istana tapi disebabkan rayuan oleh kawan baik dia kepada pihak atasan..pihak atasan terlah pardon dia tetapi transfer dia kat "kebun herba" yg kurang development tu..saya rasa kat sini la dia akan tanam herba2 utk buat ubat2-ubatan...on the way to the place/kebun...dia terserempak dengan pahlawan yg tercedera tu..tapi dia kurang recognize Chang Jin...next episode Chang Jin akan berkerja di kebun tu...kebun herba ni mmg tempat yg plg sesuai kalau nak jadi doktor.. |

jang-geum (lee young ae) is told to leave the palace for breaking the palace rule by sneaking out w/out permission.
all the superiors beg on her behalf.. but no avail. she starts packing. her boss, supervisior han (yang mi kyung),
begs and begs and gives up her promotion privileges for the next 3 years in exchange for jang-geum to stay in the palace.
finally jang-geum gets to stay in the palace, BUT not in the 'soo rah gan' (kitchen).. she gets sent to 'dae jae hun' (herbal field dept)
instead.. that's usually where all the demoted people go because that dept hasn't had much luck in few years..
they failed to cultivate the precious medicines needed.. so jang-geum arrives there.. on her way she runs into
min jung-ho (ji jin hee) but they don't recoginze each other... jang-geum sees that all the people in 'dae jae hun'
don't work but drink and sleep all day long instead.. like they all gave up on life.. but she doens't sit still like she
is told to.. she starts to read the farm journals and successfuly cultivates a very hard-to-grow herb (forgot the name)..
but the bad guy (forgot his name.. you know the boss of geum-young's uncle) sends someone to ruin the crop.. turns out he was making
loads of money as the middle man in getting the herbs from china (or was it somewhere else can't remember) so he doesn't
want to lose that income.. but the 'dae jae hun' boss who usually is a drunk figures out a way to trick the bad guy's servants
so that the judge dept gets involved to investigate the situation.. the judge dept is shocked that the farm dept figured out
how to grow the rare crop and the judge wants to know how they did it.. jang-geum gets praised and she gets sent back to the kitchen dept.
as her reward... the field dept boss gives her a letter to carry w/ her to drop off at the library on her way back to the kitchen.
at the library jang-geum can't find anyone so she begins to read the books instead.. min jung-ho arrives and explains the meaning
of a word to jang-geum... and he tells her that palace women are prohibited in the library.. but jang-geum gives the letter to him..
he opens the letter which says to let the one who delivered the letter given the privilege to read whatever book she wants to read..
because she will help the people with her talents.. the letter was actually written to someone who no longer works at the library
so min jung-ho tells jang-geum to let him know whenever she wants to read a book and he'll get it for her.
