Youths crazy for Rani Mukherjee

Among Bollywood actresses Rani Mukherjee is on top these days. She seems to have taken the place of Madhuri Dixit, who remained a heartthrob for a number of years. Rani has become a craze among the country's youths. She performed well first in 'Yuva' and then soon in 'Hum Tum'. Both the audiences as well as the critics have appreciated her performances in these movies and have placed her among the topmost stars. She has played all types of roles with equal ease. Besides, she is acting in Sanjay Bhansali's 'Black', 'Bajirao Mastani' and Ketan Mehta's 'The Rising' with her old fame friend Aamir Khan of "Aati Kya Khandala'.

Diya's guest appearance in `Kyun! Ho Gaya Na`

Bollywood actress and former Miss Asia Pacific Diya Mirza will give a special appearance in Vivek Oberoi - Aishwarya Rai starrer 'Kyun! Ho Gaya Na'. Mirza will join Amitabh and Suniel Shetty. Both Mirza and Suniel play important cameos in the film.

Kim Sharma busy with Yuvraj

Kim Sharma seems to be more involved with her boyfriend Yuvraj than her films following the return of the Indian cricket team from Pakistan. How else would she absent herself from her forthcoming mega movie 'Taj Mahal' of Akbar Khan? She has been behaving very indifferently with Akbar Khan, who has already complained to the AMTPP, the association of producers to listen to complaints against artistes making breach of contract with them. Akbar Khan has sought AMTPP's intervention in the matter of her non-cooperation in giving dates for shooting. Akbar Khan is peeved that Kim's secretary has always been avoiding giving dates for shooting saying "She is very busy". Sources close to Kim, however, say that the contract signed in July last has already expired. Anyway, it's to be seen if 'Taj Mahal' survives this quarrel between the heroine and the producer otherwise this would be canned like many others in the past.

SIGNING SPREE FOR ABHISHEK

Abhishek Bachchan is turning lucky these days inasmuch as there is a long queue of the producers and the directors offering him roles in their movies. So it's a sort of signing spree for him. This is indeed heartening for the Bachchan family, which is waiting for a hit from him. While the senior Bachchan is on top of the film industry and getting movie after movie to sign, besides offers of acting as ambassadors for several leading corporate houses or their products, the junior Bachchan is not much behind as his performances are being appreciated both by the audiences and the critics. The youths are crazy over his acting in the recently released 'Yuva'. His main project on hand is 'Sarkar', an adaptation of 'Godfather' wherein both Bachchans are playing vital roles.

While Amitabh Bachchan is playing what Marlon Brando did as Don Corleone, the junior is playing Michael, son of Don. Abhishek is eagerly looking forward to acting in this movie because of two reasons. The first is that he would act with his father, who is an icon of the film industry. And the second reason is that he would get an opportunity to work again with a veteran director like Ram Gopal Verma. He is sure that he would be able to do full justice to this film assigned to him by Verma from whom he learnt a lot during the shoot of 'Naach'. It would not be an exaggeration to mention that this is going to be a fortunate year for Abhishek. Along the line was his recent release 'Yuva'. There are others which have either been released or are awaiting it. They include Boney Kapoor's 'Run', Sanjay Gadvi's 'Dhoom' and Revathy's 'Phir Milenge' besides Verma's 'Naach'.

Nagma back in Bollywood

Nagma who is known more for her acting opposite Salman Khan in 'Baghi' has traveled a lot before returning to Mumbai's film world. She has by now completed about one hundred movies, and those too in five languages. Since her comeback, she has signed on Aashish Channa's company Media Factory for his untitled movie. She has an important role to play there as its heroine. Besides, she has signed a contract for ' Ab Tumhare Hawale Vatan Saathiyon' opposite Bobby Deol. Since Bobby has a double role to play as father and son, so has Nagma, both as wife and mother in this movie.

Sushmita may wriggle out of pros role

Beauty queen and actress Sushmita Sen is beyond anybody's influence, it is said. Yet we have learnt that recently she changed her mind even though she had signed a movie for Kalpana Lazmi. In this movie, she acts as a prostitute. According to reports, a close friend of Sushmita has wondered as to why she needed to act like Mallika Sherawat in films. As is well known, Mallika is famous for her sexy and smooch queen image. This may be the reason for Sushmita Sen to urge Lazmi to hire a senior hero opposite her in this movie. At present, Karan Nath is acting opposite her. In case Lazmi doesn't accept Sush' demand, the latter may be able to wriggle out of the movie as per advice of her friends and well wishers.

Jackie Shroff's new look for Eklavya!

We recently noticed that Jackie Shroff is sporting a new look! These days he has a rather unkempt appearance, what with a beard and long hair! When we spoke to the actor, and asked him about the new image, he told us that the new look was for Vidhu Vinod Chopra's film Eklavya. The film was originally called Yagna. So that explains the new look! Considering that Jackie has come up with some of his career-best performances in Vidhu Vinod Chopra抯 films like Parinda, 1942 A Love Story and Mission Kashmir (the first two even got him awards), we are keenly awaiting to see him in Eklavya opposite Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt and Saif Ali Khan.

Jackie also has quite a few releases lined up in the coming months. During Diwali, he will be seen in Priyadarshan's Kyon Ki. Then there is Pahlaj Nihalani's Divorce, the Shatrughan Sinha produced Mera Dil Lekar Dekho, and Rituparno Ghosh's Antar Mahal, which was also chosen for the London film festival. So Jackie fans have a lot to look forward to in the coming months!

Now that Hollywood hot couple DEMI MOORE and ASHTON KUTCHER have officially tied the knot, is a baby next?

The couple and their reps have not confirmed any of the persistent baby rumors, but don't rule anything out just yet. The happy couple have been very vocal about their desire to have children together. Only time will tell!

ET confirmed that the two were married last Saturday night at a private home in Beverly Hills in a last-minute, traditional Kabbalah wedding, with close to 100 guests present, including Demi's ex BRUCE WILLIS, their three daughters and 'Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle' co-star LUCY LIU.

Us magazine's editor-in-chief JANICE MIN told ET that Bruce acted as an unofficial "host" of the evening, and guests found out about the ceremony not more than 24 hours before! "We know that on Friday, the day before the wedding, guests were told to come over for dinner -- only a handful were told it was a wedding. US has confirmed the reception occurred at Demi's house."

Min also revealed that the wedding bands were done by celeb jeweler NEIL LANE.

SOLEIL MOON FRYE and Ashton's "That '70s Show" co-stars DANNY MASTERSON and WILMER VALDERRAMA were also in attendance. And sources tell ET that Demi's stylist was out looking for an off-the-rack dress for the star last week, while Ashton's people were frantically calling designers desperately looking for a white suit.

The now 42-year-old Demi and 27-year-old Ashton have been inseparable since they were introduced to each other through their mutual friend, actress SARA FOSTER, back in 2003. They made their first public outing together in June of that year at the 'Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle' premiere, where they arrived on the red carpet with Demi's ex, Bruce, and family in tow.

Ashton had previously been dating his 'Just Married' co-star BRITTANY MURPHY. The two split amicably in April 2003 and soon the headlines were filled with Ashton and Demi.

Wedding rumors have been floating ever since he appeared overcome with emotion for his new lady love in April on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" when he tearfully revealed, "I love being with her. She makes me a better person."

The "Punk'd" king is close with Demi's kids, RUMER, SCOUT and TALLULAH, who have reportedly moved with their mom from Idaho to a Hollywood Hills mansion together. The kids refer to Ashton as "MOD," which is short for "my other dad."

He even gets along with Bruce. The 'Sin City' star has agreed to make a special guest appearance on an upcoming episode of "That '70s Show." He'll play Vic, a fast-talking security head at Chicago's Playboy Club, who interviews Kutcher's character, Kelso, for a security gig at the club.

Abhishek denies any affair

Abhishek Bachchan is again a target of the media. He has been asked to identify his girl friend though he denies having any. This is usual in Bollywood to circulate reports about affairs of young actors and actresses, especially those who work together in some films. The innocent looking young man seems to depend more in this matter on his family. Earlier too, he was betrothed with Karisma Kapoor, which was later canceled. His family is waiting for hit film before marrying him. Though he denies to be living in the shadow of his father Amitabh, the fact remains that the big B is still dominating the industry. Moreover, Abhishek is not aggressive like the Deol brothers, who have made place for themselves. In a recent chat with the media, Abhishek said that his father is a phenomenon that happens only once in a lifetime. He confesses that besides being his son he is his fan too, because he finds his father a great human being besides an actor.

'Choodiyan' with Karisma now

This is to recall that J.P. Dutta had announced a film titled 'Choodiyan' with Sanjay Dutt, Madhuri and Raveena, but the film remained on the paper only. However, producer Vicky Kumar of 'Lakeer' has now decided to make a movie with the same title. Vicky has signed on Karisma Kapoor for this. Who will play opposite Karisma is yet to be decided though the names have been shortlisted? Vicky has to choose between the brothers - Sunny or Bobby Deol. Sukhwant Dadda of the 'Ek Chadar Maili Si' fame will direct the movie.

Priyanka plays bold in 'Yakeen'

Priyanka Chopra who is known for her item numbers would soon play the role of a bold woman in 'Yakeen'. Such a role was played by Mallika Sherawat in 'Murder' which was widely appreciated by the audience. Priyanka plays a married woman but continues to romance with her former lover in 'Yakeen". The movie is full of hot scenes too.

DD to use Bachchan to settle dues

Superstar Amitabh Bachchan will endorse public service messages for Doordarshan to settle the outstanding amount of Rs. 12.52 crore his company, Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Ltd. (now called AB Corp), owes to public broadcaster Prasar Bharati. Bachchan's company, which owed nearly Rs. 32 crore to Prasar Bharati on account of various contractual payments during late 1990s, had already paid the principal amount of Rs.19.53 crore while the interest of Rs. 12.52 crore was pending.

"It was decided that the interest would be liquidated in kind, with Amitabh Bachchan either endorsing messages exclusively for Doordarshan or doing shows for Doordarshan, which would be valued against the interest components," Prasar Bharati said, after its board gave clearance to the proposal. National Film Development Corporation was initially given the task of solving the ticklish issue of valuating Bachchan's star power. "Certaininly, Doordarshan's talent fee rates could not have been applied and valuation had to be based on Bachchan's market worth," Prasar Bharati said.

"Though Bachchan has made endorsements for clients like ICICI and Dabur, it's not possible to ascertain the exact market value due to the Confidentiality Clause," Prasar Bharati adds. It said there was also pressure on it from the Board for Industrial and Financial Reconstruction (BIFR), to which ABCL had been referred. "Even as BIFR had set an April 2004 deadline, Prasar Bharati CEO held talks with Bachchan and his company representatives on resolving the issue," Prasar Bharati said. It said following internal deliberations, it was decided that Bachchan "may be asked to endorse ten campaigns about Doordarshan's public service messages like reach in rural areas, promotion of art and culture, music and archives etc. against his interest dues."

Proud of Black spot in career: Bachchan

Among a variety of roles the superstar has portrayed on the silver screen during his long career, Amitabh Bachchan is partial to one - that of the alcoholic teacher who leads a child out of her darkness in Black.

Even months after Sanjay Leela Bhansali's film was released, Bachchan is thrilled to talk about the magnum opus.

Playing Debraj Sahai, who helps deaf and blind Michelle McNally learn sign language, brought him rare accolades. As its TV premiere "rejuvenates" the film, Bachchan reminiscences about the special experience.

Black is premiered on TV. Happy?
Of course! Anything to do with "Black" pleases me. The premiere excites me because it rejuvenates one of my favourite films, revives wonderful memories and gives audiences another occasion to connect with this exceptional film.
Do you think the nuances are likely to get lost on TV?
Size is never a criterion for noticing nuances. If you do not possess the intelligence to savour subtleties, you won't do so on a screen any size - be it a 70 mm screen or a laptop.

TV brings in a personalised, intimate experience. People would probably watch Black alone or with the people they love in an environment they're comfortable with. In this way, they'd be less distracted and be better able to relate to the characters...No extraneous distractions, no ambient chatter, no mobile phone going on, no popcorn-carrying latecomers blocking your view, and no embarrassment when brimming with emotion a tear spills out of your eye.

It's been eight months since Black was released. Where do you place it in your bulky body of work?
Undoubtedly, it would remain an unforgettable experience, and one that I'd always be proud of. It would remain at the top of my bulky and generally unattractive body of work.

Do you think Black went as far as it could in terms of recognition?
All creativity begs and clamours for recognition. But recognition and achievement are relative terms. Praise for Black from an endless stream of friends and well-wishers was overwhelming. The film seems to have touched lives and that's so moving. The warm media reviews were so stimulating.

Shah Rukh Khan touching my feet after the premiere and Dilip Kumarsaab engulfing me in his arms and later sending flowers and a personal note moved me to tears.

How much further would you like Black to go?
Somewhere deep inside himself the creator knows if his creation has achieved its optimum level. Somewhere deep inside himself Sanjay Leela Bhansali knows he has created something exceptional. And that's the work's greatest achievement and recognition. All else pales before it.

Many of your fans rate Black as your best performance and film to date. How about you?
Every artiste should endeavour to better his previous efforts. Please don't subject us to ratings. They're impersonal and ugly. And they give rise to clich閐 responses like "My best is yet to come." I'd relish fresh challenges within the limited creative resources that remain with me.

What thoughts pass through your mind now when Black is such an integral part of Hindi cinema's movement towards maturity of vision?
Maturity of vision? Was that an unintended pun on the film's theme of progressive blindness? "Black" took Hindi cinema to a hitherto unseen level. It excelled in creativity. In provided a gauge for the intelligence and maturity of our cinema-going audiences.

It destroyed conventional and traditional norms and forged a permanent place in the history of Indian cinema. And it shall always fill me with two hours of undiluted pleasure and pride as I sit in my wheelchair in the not too distant future.
