JOHN ABRAHAM: A LONG WAY TO GO

John Abraham is one of the longest warhorses of the film industry. He has been maintaining his star status after his first success in 'Jism'. The promising star with deadly looks was a successful model parachuted to success in Bollywood. 'Aetbaar' has shown John Abraham in negative shades as he portrays an obsessed lover of Bipasha Basu. It will be a challenging year ahead for him as his big projects are in pipeline. After 'Aetbaar', 'Paap', 'Lakeer' and 'Rakht' will follow for release. The film industry has shown a lot of faith in his talents as big banners have been approaching him.

According to John, 'Saaya' was the turning point of his filmi career as he was appreciated despite the fact the film bombed at the box office. John's brilliant on screen and off screen chemistry with seductive Bipasha Basu has also proved instrumental in his success. The Bhatt's camp has a soft corner for him after the enormous success of 'Jism'. He returns with another lively performance in Pooja Bhatt's 'Paap'. Doing Deepa Mehta's next film will be one of his great career moves. In this movie, he replaces Rahul Khanna. In 'Mumkin' he is paired with Bipasha and John, and expects big results from it. Indeed John Abraham has a very long way to go.

John Abraham to endorse Castrol

New Delhi: Castrol Lubricants on Friday announced actor John Abraham as its new brand ambassador.

The company signed up the actor to cash in on his image of a bike lover and also a youth icon. Earlier, brand ambassadors for the company were cricketers Rahul Dravid and Adam Gilchrist.

Lara Dutta is the one beauty of Bollywood who never says no to any director or producer for their project. In fact, she is always on the lookout for the film offers declined by Bipasha Basu. No sooner she finds a movie offer rejected by Bipasha than she tries to grab it. She is also following in the footsteps of Bipasha to seek a role for her lovebird Kally Dorrji. It is learnt that Lara got a major role for Dorrji in Shyam Benegal's forthcoming movie, 'Neetaji'. We hope Lara will not let down her boy friend as Bipasha dropped her earlier boy friend.

Bipasha insists on John in 'Lips'

It is no wonder that the sexy movie girl, Bipasha Basu, has demanded from her producer of 'Lips' to place her lovebird, John Abraham, in their forthcoming movie opposite her. She has asked Gaurav Pandey, director of 'Stumped' fame, to assign the lead role of 'Lips' to her boyfriend John Abraham rather than Rahul Bose who has already been committed to play hero opposite her. Now, Gaurav has to take a bold decision. He has to choose a hero out of John or Rahul Bose. Let's see if Bipasha will be ready to act opposite Rahul after shelving her demand for John as a hero. Bipasha is learnt to have argued that she could do bold scenes, as needed in 'Lips', only with her boy friend John. So the choice is between bold scenes and the hero? Could Bipasha afford to lose another good film on this ground?

Amitabh is chocolates' Ambassador

Has superstar of Bollywood developed a taste for Chocolate? It looks, yes. The Managing Director of Cadbury Chocolates, Bharat Puri, says that Amitabh Bachachn is a perfect ambassador for Cadbury chocolates. Puri announced that the safe and nice packing with aluminum foil paper for their chocolates would be available soon in other parts of the country though they are selling now in Maharashtra only. Amitabh Bachchan says that he has been associated with Cadbury chocolates for the last 55 years though the company has made me their brand Ambassador only now.

Shahid-Soha in 'Dil Maange More'

Bollywood's latest heartthrob Shahid Kapoor acted in one of the Pepsi ads few years back and Sharmila Tagore's daughter Soha Ali Khan also endorsed the soft drink. Now both have been paired together in a film titled 'Dil Maange More'. Ananth Mahadevan will direct the movie.

In the midst of thriller and horror films, Sushmita Sen is acting in a horror film 'Shanti Kuteer'. She will be playing a romantic lead opposite Arjun Rampal.

Sushmita Sen in Indo-American project

Sushmita Sen will act in an Indo-American project commissioned by Saregama in collaboration with a Hollywood based company headed by Drena, adopted daughter of Robert De Niro. To be directed by Manish Gupta, the English film will be shot in New York this month. Karma, Confessions And Holi set against an Indian backdrop revolves round relationships between Indians and Americans. It has super model Naomi Campbell in an integral role along with Drena and Randeep Hooda, Deepal Shaw, Rati Agnihotri and Suresh Oberoi. Talks are on with some Hollywood stars. It will be screened at the New York Film Festival to be held in March, April next year.

KAREENA QUITS 'THE RIVER MOON'

Deepa Mehta's latest offering 'The River Moon' seems to be in troubled waters. The leading lady of the film Kareena Kapoor has opted out of the project. It is assumed that it is not possible for Bebo to give 40 continuous dates for the film. Earlier, Rahul Khanna had also left the project. The reason behind the dropout seems to be that the people of Varanasi have strong objection against the shooting of the film. According to reliable sources, 'The River Moon' is identical with the movie 'Water' for which Nandita Das had shaved her head.

Kareena was to play a destitute widow who becomes a victim of sexual exploitation; the role was originally assigned to Nandita Das. After an agitation by the people of Varanasi against the shooting of 'Water' in the past, Deepa had proceeded with the making of an NRI movie 'Bollywood Hollywood'. Now, after her return from Canada, Deepa has probably renamed it to escape the public reaction. Handsome hunk John Abraham is replacing Rahul Khanna as Rahul's father Vinod Khanna may have advised his son to keep away from this movie because of resentment by his party men. This is to recall that in the beginning Akshay Kumar was expected to do this role in 'Water'. Deepa Mehta is now playing safe, as she has decided to shoot the film in Chattisgarh instead of Varanasi.

WHO COULD BE BOLDER THAN POOJA?

Pooja Bhatt is indeed following in the footsteps of her father Mahesh Bhatt who has been the boldest director and producer in bollywood. Pooja was seen recently in New Delhi with her hubby, Udham Singh. She is really a daughter of his father as both of them have their own ways of life. In a chat with the media she claimed and rightly so that freedom of expression is the DNA that "I have inherited from my father."

She had been in Delhi to inaugurate the Selfridges' Collection at Amarpali, which is famous jewelry store in the posh market of South Delhi. The workmanship of Amrapali's jewelry impressed Pooja so much that she described it as an excellent job, and remarked, "I like bold things". Well, Pooja, your fans know you and your father for your bold things in life. Pooja's free and liberal thinking has been the hallmark of their movies in Bollywood. Though Pooja has been a successful director, but she had to turn a producer herself, as no other producer was willing to back her in this field. Producers, who happen to be weak, maybe relatively, consider her boldness her minus point.

'TURBANATOR' SANJAY DUTT

Cross border terrorism and infiltration has been the hot masala for couple of years as one more film 'Sarhad Par' is shaping in this mould. Director Raman Kumar has carved an emotional saga of a Sikh army officer who returns home after lots of trauma and humiliation. Sanjay Dutt plays an army man named Ranjit Singh who returns to his motherland after facing trial in Pakistan. Sanjay Dutt has given a deadly performance as a nationalist Sikh army man when he confronts all miseries. Nimbus Motion Pictures has produced 'Sarhad Par'. Sunny Deol has also given a brilliant performance as a chivalrous Sikh as he settles score with Pakistani Army in 'Gadar- Ek Prem Katha'. Going by it Bollywood has materialized this success by a couple of films on Bhagat Singh.

It will be the first occasion for Sanjay Dutt as he plays "Turbanator (Brave patriotic Sikh)" in 'Sarhad Par'. Sanjay Dutt's heroism depicts revenge of distressed soldier who wants to take revenge for the miseries he suffered and the struggle his family has to face during his captivity. Besides being brave, he has soft feeling for his wife Tabu and is father figure to his sister Mahima Chaudhry. Robin Bhatt and Akash Khurana have written the screenplay of the film. Gaurang Doshi's 'Deewar' is also made on the similar theme as Amitabh Bachchan plays an exiled prisoner rescued by Akshay Khanna and Sanjay Dutt. Amitabh has also been presented as "Turbanator" in Anil Sharma's 'Ab Tumhare Watan Saathiyon'. The current year will witness heroic acts of "Turbanators" as the top brass of Bollywood's acting genre portrays these characters.

TADA court allows Sanjay Dutt to go abroad

A special court has allowed film actor Sanjay Dutt, an accused in the 1993 bomb blast case, to visit Tanzania and South Africa from Friday for a month on professional assignment and also on an extended vacation.

Sanjay's lawyer Farhana Shah pleaded that the actor was a brand ambassador of a company's product and was required to be in South Africa to attend a function.

She also sought permission for Sanjay to visit South Africa and Tanzania for a safari tour with his family. Sanjay's daughter Trishala would also accompany the actor.

The designated judge of TADA (P) court PD Kode on Thursday allowed Sanjay to go abroad on condition that he would file a detailed programme of his visit and also restrained him from maintaining contact with any of the absconding accused.

The judge told Dutt to ensure that his lawyer represented him during his absence in the court and in case his presence was needed he would have to appear before the court within 48 hours.

Dutt is facing the charge of allegedly possessing and destroying an AK-56 rifle, which was part of the arms consignment that landed at Dighi coast in Raigad district prior to the serial blasts in 1993. However, witnesses have turned hostile by not supporting the prosecution's case.

The court has exempted Dutt and 85 others from personal appearance till November 9.

PREITY FELT MOBBED

The dimple cheeked actress Preity Zinta was in mess recently. Preity was mobbed at the London airport as she fell from the escalator. In fact, the gorgeous Preity was approached by a group of young fans seeking her autographs. Considering it an act of hooliganism she ran sporadically on the escalator and fell down. Even fans could prove hazardous!

Dr. Mrinalini Patel has recently produced 'Kaagar' which was directed by N.Chandra. This time she has decided to direct the film. It is based on a real life incident in which the son of a reporter dies of gas leakage in a factory. The film highlights the struggle of the family of the victim for obtaining justice.
