Pneumococcal vaccine

Baru2 nih aku came across brochure from Persatuan Paediatric Malaysia about pneumococcal vaccine.dia kata jab itu utk mengelakkan jangkitan pneumococcal yg leh menyebabkan meningtis,pneumonia,middle ear infection pd kanak2.erm..so aku nak tanya korang ler saper2 yg anak dia dah amik jab nih.sbb jab nih not FOC.docs..apa comment?

All my 3 kids have gone for their injections. Bukan I nak sangat pun, but my kept pestering me. So all 3 have gone thru the immunisation. So far ok aja aku tengok.

baru2 ni pun ada ariticle in Berita Harian regarding the importance of this immunization. It is not mandatory in Malaysia. Dont know the reason.. may be the price? Wallahua'lam, sebab penulis tersebut, yang juga seorang Ped mengatakan it costs more than RM100 untuk satu vaksin.  No wonder lah dalam kad imunisasi anak saya tak ada list pun imunisasi ni even though she was born in private hospital. Tapi sebab kami sekarang di luar negara, dan bila nak masuk pre-school memang diwajib tunjukkan bukti imunisasi... salah satu vaksin yang mereka require kanak2 ambil ialah pneumococcal ni dan juga varicella... last week my 4-year old daughter dapat 4 shots sekaligus (Polio, MMR, Pneumococcal, dan DTP).. Melalak budak tu, ada demam sikit tapi mild fever only and last for one day only. My recommendation, ambillah imunisasi ni, juga satu lagi varicella (iaitu untuk Chicken pox)...

ermm..varicella nih anak aku tak amik..sbb aku kekonon pk nak dia immune sendiri...pneumoccocal nih pree ker kat ovc?naper tak wajib sbb $$ tuh iyer gak kots..

Tak tahulah samada kerajaan nak implement tak sbb hari tu pergi kat Hospital Tawakal mmg mereka promote habis suruh ambil sbb katanya utk mengelakkan anak -anak kecil alami masalah yg boleh bawa komplikasi spt cacat dan kerosakan sistem saraf badan.Harga utk injection ni kat sana RM 300.00.

RM300? that's expensive....tapi kalau utk kebaikan anak2 kita, why not, yg dalam artikel BH tu kata dalam RM100++... kat US vaksin ni setengah medical insurance cover, setengah tak, tapi disebabkan nak pastikan semua kanak2 dapat shots ikut jadual, sapa yang tak dapat coverage tu boleh dapatkan bayar murah sangat... dalam 4 dollar (less than RM16)... untuk satu2 vaksin...

Varicella (chicken pox) bahaya kalau dapat masa umur less than a year.. ped yang merawat anak lah bagitau... honey bee, Prev tu rasanya pneumococcal lah... kalau dah dapat ok... lagi satu kalau anak2 masuk asrama pun elok dapat vaksin menangitis... kat sini wajib sapa2 nak duduk dorm..

Kalau kat US, Penumococcal vaccine atau dipanggil pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) is recommended for children age 2-23 months, and for certain ages 24-59 months. My daughter tak ambil masa umur dia between 2-23 months sebab tak tahu masa tu kat sini wajib, tu yang baru2 ni baru ambil.. she is 4 y 4 months now. Ada 3 dos kena ambil.. kalau dah lepas umur 6 tahun tu mereka recommend pneumococcal polyaccharide vaccine (PPV).. itu pun untuk certain high risk groups.

A shot for protection

DON? say children don? know how to share. Why, they share all sorts of things! Sometimes it? their toys, their food, but most often, they share the microscopic organisms that live on and inside them.

Lice, for instance. You know how it is ? one child has kutu and all the other kids in the class go home scratching.

Or the common cold virus, which is why your child sometimes develops a sniffle after coming home from kindergarten.

Daycare centres, kindergartens and schools are hotbeds for infectious diseases like cold, sore throat, chickenpox and hand-foot-and-mouth (HFM) disease because children are in such close contact all day long.

  
There is now a conjugate vaccine that can prevent pneumococcal bacterial infection in infants and children up to nine years old.
And unlike adults, a child? immune system is more vulnerable to being invaded by disease-causing bacteria and viruses.  

Most of the time, the illnesses that spread are harmless. Plus, you can rest assured that if your child has been vaccinated following the National Immunisation Schedule, he is already protected against many common infectious childhood diseases like rubella, mumps, measles and whooping cough.

Unfortunately, emergencies can happen when you least expect it, as in the case of seven-year-old Thomas Lee. What started out as a normal fever one day turned into a full-blown emergency case of pneumococcal pneumonia.

It was two weeks of agony for little Thomas and his parents who had to watch helplessly as their son succumbed to a frightening disease that did not respond to antibiotics.

Seen under a microscope, the pneumococcus or Streptococcus pneumoniae bacterium looks deceptively pretty, like a strand of pearls, or a string of beads. But don? be fooled, it? nastier than it looks.

Pneumococcus causes a group of illnesses called pneumococcal disease, with the scariest ones being the invasive infections. These include bacteremia (infection of the blood), meningitis (infection of the membranes covering the brain or spinal cord), sepsis (an infection in the blood associated with shock and organ failure) and pneumonia (infection of the lungs).

Pneumococcus is the most common cause of meningitis in Malaysia, replacing Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib), for which children are now vaccinated against.  

Meningitis is dangerous because the lining of the brain becomes inflamed, and this can cause death or, for those who survive, multiple neurological problems like mental retardation, cerebral palsy, blindness, deafness or epilepsy.  

Pneumonia can be near fatal as well. In our country, it is one of the common illnesses that causes childhood hospitalisation and death.

Pneumococcus also causes non-invasive diseases, including otitis media (middle-ear infection) and sinusitis.  

These diseases are dangerous, too; a child with middle-ear infection may develop complications like hearing loss, learning disabilities and delays in speech development.  

The impact of the pneumococcus bacterium is devastating: each year, more than one million children throughout the world die as a result of pneumococcal disease.

If antibiotics are the marvel that scientific discovery produced to fight bacteria, why didn? it cure Thomas? pneumonia?

Many years ago, it might have. But Thomas was probably infected by a strain of pneumococcus that has recently become resistant to penicillin and other antibiotics. This is happening in many countries around the world, including Malaysia, due to the overuse and misuse of antibiotics

Children infected with antibiotic-resistant strains of the bacteria may have prolonged illness because they do not respond to formerly effective drugs. Their disease may spread more rapidly, unless treated with expensive alternative antibiotics.

Clearly, antibiotics are not the answer.

So how do you protect your child from something that spreads through a simple cough, a sneeze, or by the touch of a hand?

Through vaccination, that? how. And fortunately for parents in Malaysia, there is now a conjugate vaccine that can prevent pneumococcal bacterial infection in infants and children up to nine years old.

The vaccine provides protection against 60%-80% of pneumococcal infections. It is safe, but may sometimes cause some mild reactions like local irritation and fever. Some children may experience other temporary side effects like irritability, drowsiness, restless sleep, decreased appetite, vomiting and diarrhoea.

Although Thomas did not receive the vaccination, he recovered from the infection with no ill effects.

His mother, having gone through the trying ordeal, now advises parents to have their children, especially the very young ones, vaccinated against pneumococcal infection.

Patutnya diwajibkan... kesihatan dan pendidikan adalah dua isu utama yang patut dipandang serius kan.. yelah ibu bapa mampu boleh juga bayar walaupun sekali bayar beratus.. teringat parents dari keluarga miskin.. tak usah 200, atau 100 ringgit, kalau kena bayar 50 ringgit pun belum tentu mampu... sedih bila terkenang kat mereka... kena ada orang-orang kaya like Bill Gates yang pemurah dan sponsor vaccine kat golongan miskin ni.. tu yang saya berangan betul... kalau jadi kaya nak sponsor pendidikan dan kesihatan untuk orang miskin... tapi apakan daya belum mampu ke takat itu... takat bagi zakat n sedekah tu cerita lain.. tapi pendidikan dan kesihatan berterusan ni yang rasa sangatlah pentingnya....

Owen pun baru terfikir pasal pneumococcal vaccine ni. Decide nak ambik jugak. Utk chicken pox dah ambik tuk dua2 anak owen.
Mungkin out topic sket just nak tanya org dewasa boleh ke ambik vaksin chicken pox ni sebab owen ni sampai sekarang belum kena chicken pox wpun dah ader dua anak

ha..ini le yg aku bc kat pamplet tuh...akak blackie..ada exclusion tak utk org2 yg takleh amik mende nih...
lg satu ngk ada dua jenih vaccine nih..cuba akak terangkan skit...kitenyer appt next week maa..lambat lgk nak bertemuramah ngan doc..

...eerr...exclusion criteria ???...usually this new conjugated pneumococcal vaccine should not be given to children who have a known hypersensitivity to latex or to any component of the vaccine...including diphtheria toxoid...

...or to children who had an allergic reaction or anaphylactoid reaction following prior administration of prevenar...

"Adults who have never had chickenpox, especially if they are at high risk of exposure to the virus. This includes teachers of young children, day care workers, parents of young children, college students, international travelers, and others"  (di ambil dari site tu...so basically recommended for adults jugalah..)...

Aleesa pernah kena dulu masa umur belasan tahun.. so tak ambil lah imunisasi chicken pox ni tapi tak pernah ambil rubella pula.. yelah masa diwajibkan kita dah dah kat uni masa tu... sekarang pregnant, doktor kat sini kata, right after delivery mereka nak bagi shot tu... -( dah lama tak kena cucuk takut lak...

hari tu when we went back to m'sia for my boys punya final polio jab ingat nak ambik pneumococcal jab sekali. then the pediatrician told us the price...terus tak jadi. it was about RM290 mcm tu... so when we went back to brisbane, we had the jab here instead. kat sini free....

its ok...masa i pregnant pun i didnt have my rubella as well. right after you deliver, they wil give you the shot

huhu..aku tatau le anak aku nih sensitive kat latex ke idak..takper..nanti haku try sbb aku br beli sarung tgn latex...yg diftheria toxoid tuh menatang haper?

Tulah benda2 penting macam vaksin ni should be free apatah lagi untuk low income group. Atau kalau nak charge pun kena sliding fee lah.. below RM10 ke... tapi since these two vaccines (Pneomoccal dan varicella) tak wajib, jadi memang tak availaible kat gov clinic kot.. private clinic biasalah, mereka beli vaccine tu pun mahal, so kenalah jual ikut rega tu..harap2 those 2 vaccines diwajibkan in the near future.
