In 1999, famous author Hou Wen Yong unloaded the huge Taiwanese doctor's halo which is envied by everybody. With almost a year to finish, "Bae Se Ju Ta" has became a top 2005 best-seller that it was then adapted into a TV serial, pursued from all sides under a string of meticulous performances of the cast from Director Cai Yue Xun.
Now returning fresh from his directoral beau to Taiwan's No. 1 best selling idol drama "Meteor Garden", is Cai Yue Xun planning on how to bring up the local Taiwanese drama to a higher level Asian drama? This act reprimanded NT$ 80 million to support, lasting to 9 months of filming, including a 30-man team of cameramen, lightsmen, art and costume designers, propsmen, moviemaking technicians, screenplay writer, and other production staff, and gathering a cast line up of famous young and veteran stars from Hong Kong and Taiwan. What kind of an idol drama craze will it create? Director Cai and the cast and crew awaited nine months, of not being shown yet , and except for Korea, its overseas cop.yright sales has already swept away all Asian territories. Upon seeing the earlier raw scenes, Japanese NHK Network has already discussed the TV rights with Director Cai, hoping " Bae Se Ju Ta" to become the first Taiwanese TV drama to be shown at the NHK channel, as well as curve a niche and make an impact on the Asian drama circles. Also, its powerful drama charm is like a stored old volcanic lava , just urgently waiting to erupt...
Very fine commercial drama
Speaking on putting weight to the drama's commercial value and recieving the veiwers' ratings, has always been Director Cai Yue Xun's target. He stressed that he himself would not film a high-end type of artistic drama not appreciated by the masses. With regards to "Bae Se Ju Ta," the director said, " I wish it would be very easy to watch and its commercial value must also be very high." Breaking though from his former restricted directorial style, Director Cai has high expectations for "Bae Se Ju Ta." Inside the drama scenes, viewers will no longer see any shadow of Director Cai's previous directorial style, as it dissolved and changed into an intense directorial style. It is a first degree trial to taste a kind of several solidly written narrative styles, following the very fine cut to differenciate while letting the viewers experience a withdrawn picture of life inside the hospital.

Because of budget and tecnical limitations, Director Cai frankly said, " As far as the overseas TV rights success, we even studied how to walk in tip toes, and also watched at what they couldnt reach behind their backs."
Seeks perfection, close to severe searching
Director Cai had always grinded people with a rigid filming style. In Bai Se Ju Ta, while it may be said that it was not polite, the very first basic requirement is that the cast must follow the real medical steps. Before the shooting started, every cast recieved large amounts of medical services trainings, to reach a true-to-life medical treatment, and prevent being the laughing stock by knowledgable people . Bai Se Ju Ta cast was all required to evenly practice the medical services by heart, comprising surgical operations, surgical postures, hand-scrubbing, first aid and so on. Even Hou Wen Yong and other doctors gave a complete and long special trainings. In addition, in order to make all the scenes more fast-faced and very fine, Director Cai Yue Xun especially imported from Japan the tailor-made doctors clothes, caps, surgical gowns and gloves, surgical equipments and so on, to attempt in filming Taiwan's most beautiful group of doctors.
On the preparation of props and filming locations, Director Cai strictly required the need for an almost near-perfect degree. He actually seek his target that usually let his filming crew thoroughly injured their brains. "I felt really very bitter when I film a drama, which ordinary local TV stations is hard to accept" For Bai Se Ju Ta, Director Cai Yue Xun directed the drama crew to adopt by the "all-Asian drama" standards in preparing props and locations.
Is Director Cai actually a lot more strict? When the drama crew was prepararing the few props for the presidential suite room in the hospital, Director Cai strictly required that the intercom "must" have real electrical switch, which the former drama group was not able to borrow. He then invited an art productions group to make one. The same day, all cast arrived at the same time. But because the director was working with the props, all had to wait at the location site for the shooting to pack -up. Director Cai said, " When the a group of crew were irresponsible, I dont have enough patience to endure. " Director Cai thought that in Taiwan, all the drama crew need to undergo re-trainings.
Cai Yue Xun really feels extremely demanding. During the shooting, he met many problems in finding location sites. With the hospital location alone, Cai Yue Xun's wife Yu Xiao Hui ran to seek and paid visit all-over Taiwan to a lot of family-owned hospitals, commercial spaces, and even do-it-yourself pre-fabricated location vanues. In the process, Director Cai is thankful to Gao Xiong City where they have 3 lakes, Xin Dian and Gen Xin hospitals for help and support, especialy Zhang's Provincial Hospital which provided their surgical room free of charge and its surgical communication facilities used in the drama scenes. Also inside the institution, to the doctors and nurses who had not always charged fees for the medical trainings of the cast. Director Cai said, " We had tried many largely up-scaled hospitals and they had not agreed to lend us at all. Luckily, there are these people to help us, otherwise, Bae Se Ju Ta will just be impossible to finish.

In 2006, the novel was adapted into a TV serial "The Hospital." Soon to be shown, thousands are now aiming to watch it. If the novel had created a stir to the literary and medical world before, no less than than the TV adaptation was recorded to be the biggest budgeted serial in Taiwanese TV history, with the gathering of three generations of multii-awarded old and young stars, "The Hospital" spent almost two years in the making. Now from the author Hou Wen Yong's point of view, what kind of story is hidden behind it?.....
The Hospital created a new record high
.... Aside from having the "Longest Filming Period," spent "80 MILLION Production costs" , and other new high records, the selection of the cast also pierced the brains of Hou Wen Yong and Cai Yue Xun. Becuase the main lead Su Yi Hua is about 40 years old, looking for the suitable man among the stars resulted to less choices because these 40-year olds stars are continously decreasing in the Taiwanese movie industry, and still with a giant star status was critically not enough, "so they had to choose between the 20 year olds and above as a new replacement" Yong said....
.....When Cai Yue Xun recommended Asian Idol Heavenly King Jerry Yan, Hou Wen Yong had some doubts. Worried he is too young, can he perfectly portray for the role of Su Yi Hua? " Not until the first time I saw Jerry Yan's picture in the internet, I found out that his bright smiles can give any person with a kind of trust feeling. Not many people have this special nature. Only then that I had set my mind to look for Jerry to play the role."
Hou Wen Yong enthusiastically praised Jerry, " For nine months, he had only filmed one TV serial, becuase for Jerry, its a <po tian huang> (JK: Dont know what this is!!) thing. He gave so much effort in these drama scenes, and also faced too many business, market sales and public opinion pressures. After the shooting ended, everyone began to praise him, and also proved that Jerry's decision to accept the role is correct. "....
Outstanding team adds up to its good drama value
..."For example, when Wu Meng Da came to shoot, he didnt bring his script. I was pretty scared that I jumped off, why is this actor doesnt brings his script? Actually, when he come home, he immediately grabbed his script to study it, and not only did he learned it by heart but he didnt even miss a single dialogue! You then think how many times did he memorize the lines? Hou Wen Young said, "these outstanding hard-core actors all have very high work ethics. Everytime I visit the set, I see that no one is complaining even if everyone is already tired. Everybody is ready to risk for his work, that atmosphere which has the right influence to young stars entering that kind of environment, and for which they can improve their talents quickly.
..."There was once when they location-filmed an emergency scene, and the Director wanted to use a revolving camera shot, so the cameraman had to run in circles in order to film it. That kind of movie camera is very heavy, almost 25 kilos each. Because he was moving and cant use a tripod, he wore steel shoes so his camera shots will not falter as he runs. In the emergency scene, which is a lead feature of the serial, every face od the character is featured. The cameraman might had ran at least two to three hundred circles in just one scene..."
Director Cai Yue Xun strives for perfection
"The Hospital" director Cai Yue Xun is still the no-rest "workaholic" . Any small detail doesnt escape from his eyes. When Hou Wen Yong talked about Cai Yue Xun's eyes, "Cai Yue Xun's only mission is to "make it a good thing " At theGuan Xin's bus station sign, he must proceed to Gao Xiong Oil refinery bus station to shoot because Taipei has no bus station sign like that. If he must, "the entire Taiwan should only be in one area" then if he couldnt find the places, he wont shoot...."
In "The Hospital", a lot of the scenes must be shot inside a hospital. However, because Taiwanese hospitals had many considerations, it was very difficult to get one, and had to strive so hard to look for one. When he finally succeeded in borrowing a suitable hospital, Cai Yue Xun was not satisfied "because he felt that the floor color was not right!" Hou Wen Yong then laughed, " Later I realized that Cai Yue Xun wanted to film " an all-Taiwanese imaginary hospital that doesnt even exist". Finally, the drama was filled with pretty transparent glass window backdrop in the hospital halls, which was filmed at the Nang Gang Industrial Park international conference exhibit show, which matched their location shooting. Not only did they rented it with a pleasant price of six figures for each day but they also got to shoot on days when the weather is not good. Cai Yue Xun would wait for the right clear weather, choosing another day they could re-shoot, not compromising on any defective camera shot....
Hou Wen Yong's expectations for "The Hospital"
....The hospital is still not shown, but at present it is already sold overseas cop.yrights to many Asian countries except Korea. At the same time, it went up to be the highest-priced Taiwanese drama sold in Japan. For this achievement, Hou Wen Yong said," This is because The Hospital's structure is not only restricted " to show for Taiwanese audience" but is made to be released for the whole Asian market. That is is why the quality that had always captured the Japanese audience, naturally want to to take it at this price, and buys a good drama that is worth watching.

From getting the filming rights up to selecting the cast
3 years ago, his wife was also his filming partner + Mrs. Cai Yu Xiao Hui recommended to Director Cai Yue Xun to start an active fight to this TV filming rights. They waited to talk to author Hou Wen Yong regarding negotiations. When they got hold of the TV filming rights, many problems hindered its production and changed the way on TV dramas.
Although he got the filming rights, he was again faced with a new problem -- choosing the cast. They wanted Jerry Yan but as F4 are Asian supermen, asking him to to shoot for a long time for a TV serial is almost impossible. He wanted Leon Dai to portray the antagonist role but Leon proposed that he only wanted the lead role of Su Yi Hua. But after discussions, Director Cai and Yu Xiao Hui had decided that "no matter how long, they would wait for Jerry and also not to give up on him."
From the press conference, start of the shooting up to finishing the TV filming
On May 31, 2005, inside Jing Hua Restaurant in Taipei, was an international gathering of Asian media from different countries. Joining "The Hospital" Start of Shooting Press Con, are the cast that were chosen more than a year ago. It included the busy Jerry Yan , who had just made his final decision to join, Leon Dai and many more, whose negotiations for each star was carried on , ready for the official announcement of the start of shooting " Choosing the cast TV filming is really hard. The people selected must decide first and the talent fee takes longer talks." Reporters who talked to Director Cai revealed that these are among the most difficult negotiations. Jerry said, "As far as I'm concerned, it's been 3 years since I last acted in a TV serial. Although continous shooting can be really hard, I would strive harder. If not for Meteor Garden and worked with Director Cai, I wouldnt be what I am today. " On June 17, at Taipei's Nang Gang Science Garden is a small family hospital where "The Hospital" began shooting. Leon Dai and Janine Zhang and so on were now shooting a scene inside the make-shift hospital. Because the filming is not according to the right sequencing of the soon-to-be aired series, the stars had to display their own imagination to synthesize and act in each kind of scene.
From smooth filming up to delayed shooting later
This day, it was the bald SAYA who played a cancer patient who is now filming a scene. Even if the audio was bad, the restless Director Cai still coached the actress on her scenes. On November 28, at the oil refinery at the outskirts of Gao Xion City, which for a long time they had secretly filmed, the drama group accepted to be interviewed. According to the producer's memo, the series must be finished within the year, and whitin 1-2 months, it should be ready for showing. At this time, roughly 2/3 was already finished and could be shown by the start of next year. However, wacthing the 10 minute TV preview at the press conference . everyone thought that completing this project would take time. As filming ends, it's a new beginning right away
On Feb 25, 2006, the filming was officially completed. In Nan Rd. Dun Hua and Nang Gang Ou Science Garden, the hospital of "Bai Se Ju Ta" had their final filming. Jerry, Leon Dai, Janine Zhang, Xui Jie Kai, An An and so on gathered together since they began shooting 245 days ago, almost 9 months. It seems that filming a movie is unsurpassingly like shooting a TV serial in Taiwan. Under the director's command, we saw how the stars was filled with accomplished pride and satisfied expressions. For Director Cai, he just completed a TV production, doing the technical part of it and coming to a new task immediately --- the editing. When interview, Director Cai finally said, "Yes, it is about to be completed." This masterpiece will forever leave a name in the Taiwanese TV serials. |
