Isinbayeva raises World record to 5.04m in Monaco

Monte-Carlo - In the last few minutes at the Herculis 2008, a Super Grand Prix status meeting as part of the IAAF World Athletics Tour 2008, Yelena Isinbayeva at her third attempt made a fine clearance at 5.04m, so improving her World Pole Vault record* by one centimetre.

The Russian抯 first two efforts at this bar had not been close.

Her clearance improves the 5.03 performance she set on the 11 July in Rome, Italy, at the third stop on the 臚 Golden League 2008, a result which itself added two centimetres to the World record she had set at the 2005 World Championships in Helsinki.

Isinbayeva was especially excited because as she explained to the crowd, "this was my first competition in this stadium (Stade Louis II) since Monaco became my home."

Made In China: Olympic Uniforms Revealed!

Saturday, August 2, 2008

The Chinese economy is growing like crazy. A new skyscrapers seems to pop up everyday. They are so successful and yet so disliked by some around the world for all the issues hanging over the country.

It's tough not to like their uniforms though. The Chinese Federation went with a pretty straight forward look. They combined maroon and yellow, the nation's primary colors, for the historic Olympic Games to be hosted on their soil.

For the Chinese, hosting the Olympic Games is intended to demonstrate to the Chinese people that they have officially arrived as a super power.

China needs Nike, because their past history of Olympic uniforms border on uninspiring and lackluster. At the 2004 Olympics, Liu Xiang won China's only gold medal in the 100-meter hurdles. The uniform he sported in the final is simply unremarkable on any level. A major requirement of being a super power means being admired by the world, and the Olympic Games is the time to look the part to the rest of the world.

In order to deliver on the big day, China tapped Nike to design uniforms for the Chinese track and field athletes. The uniforms include all the latest bells and whistles in running apparel.

The new uniform design is intended to lift and reduce drag, wash without wrinkles, and all the other fine features intended to win gold through a better mousetrap. The Chinese athletes will certainly appreciate the big bucks poured into their development.

Mark Parker, Nike President and CEO, and 22 Chinese Federations unveiled their uniform collections in front of 500 invited guests and media.

"That is at the core of what Nike is all about,” said Nike President and CEO Mark Parker. “This is some of the best work we’ve ever done. From BMX to Track and Field, athletes like Liu Xiang inspire us to create our best and most innovative product.”

For China’s athletes, the experience means wearing uniforms that are steeped in the country’s heritage and combined with Nike’s performance innovations.

The running spike is designed for Chinese athletes participating the track and field events during the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. It is designed to shave milliseconds off times which could mean the difference between gold and silver.

Sometimes things do not turn out as originally planned. That is probably the case with the outfits that the Chinese athletes are slated to wear at the Opening Ceremony.

This uniform is awkward and features a little too much maroon and yellow for one outfit.

- AFP

Acara saringan 100m bermula Jumaat ini sebelum pusingan akhir berlangsung sehari kemudian.

Usain Bolt blows 'em away in 100m final

THE record books will say last night's Olympic 100 metres mensfinallasted 9.69 seconds. They're wrong. It will last for ever in thememoryof anyone who saw it.

How can one man - no, make that one kid not yet 22 years-old and as laid-back as a teenager - run that fast?

It was a performance that was, at once, staggering and shocking.

Usain Bolt didn't just beat the fastest 100m fields ever assembled. He battered them. Stunned them. Humiliated them.

This, after all, was a young man who didn't even consider himself a specialist 100m runner. The 200m is his race.

It is better suited to his long legs and slow wind-up.

That'sthetheory anyway, a theory that Bolt threw into the top deck ofBeijing'sBirds Nest in the most extraordinary sprint in history.

Itwasn'tthat he wasn't expected to win. The Jamaican's form in the heatsandsemi-final in which he seemed to be toying with both his opponentsandthe stopwatch saw him lining up for the final as hot favourite.

But this was the Olympics. The biggest stage in world sport.

Plus there was the question mark over Bolt's countryman Asafa Powell.

Powellhadbeaten him last time they ran, just a few weeks ago in Munich.Surely hetoo was holding something in reserve during the preliminaryrounds. After all, this was Powell big chance. His last chance.

Twiceinthe last four years he had gone in to major championships expectedtowin. Twice he had come up short. If Jamaicans have an equivalent oftheterm "choker", that's what Powell faced being called for the restof hislife.

There were others in the field too of course, butnot thegreat American hope Tyson Gay. He failed to make it throughthesemi-final.

He said he was disappointed, bitter even.Afterwatching what Bolt did to the seven other runners who did make ittothe final, he might consider himself lucky.

No-one could have predicted what happened at precisely 10.30pm Beijing time.

It started with the announcer's voice booming around the stadium.

"And now the last event on tonight's programme. The men's 100 metres final."

He could have saved his breath and just used one word. "Showtime."

AsBoltwas introduced to the crowd he waved and pretended to pull backanimaginary bow and arrow. He smiled and danced to the music. He wassorelaxed he might have been lining up for a race with his mates onabeach back home in Jamiaca.

In comparison his fellow finalists were reserved to the point of appearing scared.

Allexceptfor American Walter Dix. With his cornrow braided hair, whiteframedsunglasses and brash attitude, the former US college championlookedmore like we have come to expect from a world class 100 metresprinter.A combination professional wrestler, rock star and finelytuned machine.

Powelldidn't have the confidence or thepersonality to play any pre-racegames. He had what appeared an overlycontrived air of indifference.Maybe it was fright.

Maybe he already knew what the rest of us were about to find out. Powell had nothing more to give.

And Bolt? Well, he was just having a ball.

Astherest of the field took their blocks, he continued to stand and rockfromside to side in time with the music, a big smile on his face. Theracewas delayed as the starter waited.

Then the gun went offand itwas all over. Bolt kept his big frame hunched for 30 metres thenstoodand those long legs ate up the track. He didn't just run, he flew.

Withtwometres left he was so far in front that he spread his arms andliftedhis knees, like an NFL star hot-dogging in the in-zone.

He was throwing kisses to the crowd by the time Powell crossed the line, out of the medals.
Then Bolt took off his gold shoes and kissed them.

Look closely at those shoes when you see the photos. Hard believe, but there are no wings.

- AFP
