Phillips sails 8.74m in Eugene for best Long Jump in world since 1991

Eugene, USA - Dwight Phillips isn抰 ready to retire yet. At the 35th Prefontaine Classic at Hayward Field on Sunday (7 June), the 2003 and 2005 World and 2004 Olympic Long Jump champion sailed to a career best of 8.74m to move into a tie for fifth on the all-time performer list with the world抯 longest jump since 1991.

The Prefontaine Classic is a Grand Prix status meeting as part of the 2009 IAAF World Athletics Tour.

The 8.74m effort was a turnaround from 2008 when the 31-year-old Phillips contemplated retirement after being slowed by a malady of injuries that included a torn abdominal muscle, knee problems and Achilles tendonitis. Phillips cut his season short in July after placing fourth in the U.S. Olympic Trials, one place away from a berth on the U.S. team for Beijing.

Sebahagian keputusan 2009 Prefontaine Classic

Lagi kekalahan mengejut pelari-pelari pecut 100m akhir Olimpik 08 termasuk bekas pemegang rekod dunia 100m Asafa Powell kepada pelari tidak ternama Michael Rodgers.

Awal musim terbaik buat Pemegang pingat gangsa 100m wanita kejohanan dunia 2007, Carmelita Jeter. Tahun lepas dia gagal untuk melayakan diri ke Olimpik. Sementara itu pemenang pingat emas Olimpik 08 Shelly Ann Fraser gagal utk mempamerkan aksi meyakinkan.

Juara Olimpik 08 Dawn Harper gagal utk menamatkan saingan.

Bolt wins Laureus World Sports award

AP

Thursday, June 11, 2009

TORONTO (AP) - Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt won the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year award yesterday for his record-breaking performance in the Beijing Olympics.

Usain Bolt (left) of Jamaica engages in his trademark pose after accepting the prestigious Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award from former world 200 and 400m record holder Michael Johnson in Toronto, Canada, yesterday.

Bolt became the first man to win gold in the 100 metres (9.69 seconds), 200 metres (19.30) and 400-metre relay (37.10) in world record times in the same Olympiad.

"I am delighted to win this prestigious award and would like to thank everyone who voted for me," said Bolt, who performed his trademark celebration, a lightning-like gesture with his arms.

"It is an honour to succeed such greats as multiple winner Roger Federer, Michael Schumacher, Lance Armstrong and Tiger Woods."

He received the award from Laureus World Sports Academy member Michael Johnson, who set the previous record in the 200m (19.32secs) at the 1996 Olympics.

The other nominees for the award were: Olympic swimming sensation Michael Phelps; Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal; motor sport racers Lewis Hamilton and Valentino Rossi; and Portugal and Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo.

In Rome last week, Russian pole-vault star Yelena Isinbayeva received the Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year Award.

Bolt is in Toronto to compete in the 100 at the Festival of Excellence track and field meet to be held at the University of Toronto's Varsity Centre today.

Dibaba diburu lelaki Afrika

- Agensi

Bolt wins men's 100 meters in Toronto

TORONTO (AP): Usain Bolt was good enough to win even if he didn't flash his world-record breaking form in the 100 meters at the Festival of Excellence on Thursday.

The Olympic champion from Jamaica finished in 10.00 seconds under a dark sky and in a steady downpour at University of Toronto's Varsity Stadium.

"It felt good," Bolt said. "I think I should have done a little better. For me, it's all right. I got through it injury free so that's a good thing."

American Shawn Crawford was second in 10.25, while Ivory Williams finished third in 10.28. Bernard Williams was fourth, crossing the line in 10.47.

Crawford, who won gold in the 200 meters at the 2004 Athens Olympics, finished second to Bolt in the 200 in Beijing. Williams won gold in the 4x100 relay at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Bolt won three golds in Beijing last year. He said on Thursday he held back a little because of the cool and damp conditions. Temperatures were in the 60s F (below 20 C).

"That's the right thing to do," Bolt said. "You've got to be very careful because you have a lot of running to do and you can't manage to get injured at this time of the season."

Bolt's most recent race was also in wet weather. In May, running on a temporary street track in Manchester, England, he ran the world's fastest 150 in 14.35 seconds, breaking Canadian Donovan Bailey's 12-year-old record of 14.99 in the seldom-run distance.

"I'm kind of used to running in the rain," Bolt said. "I prefer not to run in the rain."

Thursday's race was delayed by two false starts, with Jamaican Marvin Anderson disqualified on the second.

"It threw me off a little bit but not much," Bolt said. "I've been there before." A sold-out, pro-Jamaican crowd cheered Bolt's every move. He rounded the track twice after his win, once slapping hands with fans along the fence, the second time with children who had been competing earlier.

This was Bolt's second race since a car accident in April, when he crashed his car into a ditch along a highway. Bolt required surgery on his left foot after stepping onto thorns while getting out of the wreckage.

Earlier in the meet, reigning Olympic 400 champion LaShawn Merritt cruised to victory in a time of 44.86.

"I pretty much cleared the field," Merritt said. "I was coming down the home stretch and saw that I was in the lead. In a week and a half I have my nationals. I wanted to come in and get a good race, I got a good race."

The Festival of Excellence featured 50 Olympians but Bolt was the headliner, reportedly earning more than $250,000 Canadian for his appearance in front of 5,835 fans.

American Bryan Clay, gold medal winner in the decathlon in Beijing, competed in a three-event format including pole vault, 100 hurdles and the 400. Clay won the event over American Jake Arnold, scoring 2,739 points.

In the women's 100 hurdles, Canadian Priscilla Lopes-Schliep, the bronze medal winner at the Beijing Olympics, narrowly beat out Canadian rival Perdita Felicien, crossing the line in 12.96 seconds.

- AFP

US Champs, Day 1

Gay sprints to a windy 9.75 and turns his attentions to Berlin

Eugene, USA - Seldom has one athlete claimed so many national team spots in so short a time.

As the 100m and 200m defending World Champion, Tyson Gay only needed to compete at the USA Championships here in Eugene to claim positions on the starting lines of both events at the 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics, Berlin, Germany (15– 23 Aug).

As it happened, yesterday (25) at the first day of the nationals Gay needed only 9.75 seconds (with the aid of a 3.4 m/s tailwind) to pick up both spots, in what will likely be the fastest team qualification of the entire meet. Gay has announced that he has no intention of running further rounds, nor will he contest the 200m.

"I knew it was wind aided," said Gay, "so it wasn’t going to get in the books. At the same time, I got to know that I am able to turn over that fast. I'll be able to do that when I execute. Honestly, I ran a horrible race." Gay, who watched Usain Bolt's 9.69 from the sidelines in Beijing, suggested that he considers himself capable of improving on the World record if everything goes right, unlike today, where he faulted his start. "I got out of the box and just held on to the field until about 60 metres," he explained. "The false start kind of threw me off."

Clay out

Gay's show of speed was the most striking news when the other big headline, Olympic gold medallist Bryan Clay's non-start in the Decathlon (see detailed story in ‘Related Content’ under the photograph to the right of this text) was about a major competitor not making the team.

Other fast windy sprints

Gay wasn't the only sprinter taking advantage of the tailwinds to pick up fast marks, with seven runners under 10 seconds in the men's 100m.

Darvis Patton and Michael Rodgers both stopped the clock at 9.92 with Travis Padgett at 9.93 and three more runners at 9.98. Not one heat had legal wind. Similar marks were attained in the women's 100m, with Carmelita Jeter running 10.88 with a 3.1m/s tailwind and the relatively unheralded Alexandria Anderson running 10.92.

US Champs, Day 2

Jeter and Rodgers take 100m titles in Eugene

Eugene, USA - After Tyson Gay's fireworks on Thursday evening, it was Carmelita Jeter's turn to burn up the track on Friday (26) in the women's 100m to highlight the second day’s action at the U.S. national championships in Eugene.

Jeter opened with a 10.72w in the semi-final round, the fastest mark in the last nine years, albeit with a 3.0m/s tailwind as Eugene's sunny but breezy weather continued.

Jeter then appeared poised to run away with the final as she burst from the field halfway down the track. A funny thing happened in the second half of that final, though, as Muna Lee hit her stride and gradually reeled Jeter in. There was little or nothing to distinguish between the two women at the finish line, and when the winner was finally announced, it was Jeter 10.78, then Lee, 10.78. (The times to thousandths of a second were 10.776 for Jeter, 10.777 for Lee; the wind was +3.3m/s.) Third place went to Lauryn Williams in 10.96, to earn her third consecutive trip to the World championships.

Jeter pulled up after crossing the finish line, grasping at her right hamstring, and hurried through the media/athlete mixed zone explaining that she needed to see her physiotherapist. "I cramped up at about the 70 meter mark," she said. "It was just a cramp, not a pull, so I'll be fine."

"I'm really excited to make the Worlds team. I didn't make the team last year and I wanted to get past that. It's a new year for me."

Muna Lee now holds the fastest ever non-winning 100m performance. "I've been wishing I could find my stride earlier in the race," Lee said a little ruefully.

The year of Michael Rodgers

It was anther close one in the men's 100m final with Michael Rodgers adding another to his now-lengthy string of wind-aided sub-10 clockings in that event. Rodgers took the early lead, but a closing charge by Darvis Patton brought Patton up to Rodgers' shoulder.

Rodgers maintained enough of a lead to win in 9.91 to Patton's 9.92, with a tailwind of 3.1m/s. Third place went to newcomer Monzavous Edwards in 10.00 even; all three will join Tyson Gay on the U.S. team for Berlin.

"This is my year," said Rodgers. "I came here with a lot of confidence. I think I can medal in Berlin if I work hard and stay humble. I have a lot of respect for [Usain Bolt and Tyson Gay] and I have to wait my turn like everyone else."

Patton was ebullient, saying, "I made the team, and I'm very satisfied right now. I thought I might creep up on him for a second, but the little joker held on."

Walter Dix, Olympic bronze medalist at 100 and 200m, failed to advance from the semi-final rounds of the 100m.

USA Champs, Day 3

World season leads for Demus and Merritt as team takes shape in Eugene

Eugene, USA - David Payne is planning in advance this year. Payne flew to Osaka on short notice to go from alternate to bronze medallist in 2007, with apparently no trace of jet lag, giving rise to jokes about "Payne off the Plane" and "David Payne Standard Time."

Saturday afternoon (27 June), Payne booked his ticket for the 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics, Berlin, Germany (15– 23 Aug), in advance by beating Terrence Trammell to the line in the men's 110m hurdle final.

Both Payne and Trammell were credited with 13.12 clockings, Payne finishing with a .003-second advantage over Trammell. Aries Merrit in 13.15 snagged the third team spot, with the rest of the field out of contention.

"This means that I am someone to be reckoned with," Payne said, "and now I don’t have to find out at the last minute whether or not I'm going to Berlin. I think I can definitely win in Berlin. The question before this meet was whether or not I could win here, and I did it."

53.78 world season lead for Demus

Lashinda Demus was the class of the field in the women's 400m Hurdles, getting a strong start and leading through the second curve, where she was challenged by Sheena Tosta. Tosta led briefly coming in to the homestretch but Demus produced a perfect drive through the last two hurdles to finish in a world season leading 53.78 sec, a facility record at Hayward Field. Tosta was second in 54.45 with Tiffany Williams claiming the third team spot.

"It feels a lot better than not making the team," said Demus, who faded to fourth on the homestretch at last year's Olympic Trials.

Richards, Merritt dominate 400m

LaShawn Merritt equalled his own world season leading mark in the men's 400m final, powering down the homestretch to another 44.50sec and a chance to add a World Championships gold to his Olympic medal.

Collegian Gil Roberts of Texas Tech was the closest challenger with a 44.93 in second; Kerron Clement, already on the team as the defending World champion in the 400m Hurdles, earned a second spot by finishing third in the flat race with a 45.14.

"I played it smart," said Merritt. "I didn't want to race hard the whole way." Merritt noted the winds which, while blowing sprinters in shorter events to fast times, bedeviled the longer races on the backstretch. "Because I knew the wind, I ran in it these past two days. I got through it, got to the curve, worked it and finished up strong."

Merritt's main rival, Jeremy Wariner, ensured his own spot in Berlin by running the first round of the 200m earlier in the afternoon, running 20.77 to advance to tomorrow's semi-finals. As the defending World champion, Wariner is guaranteed a spot in Berlin.

Sanya Richards showed no signs of weakness in the women's 400m final, but she also faced no serious challenge. Richards posted a 50.05sec clocking to win ahead of Debbie Dunn's 50.79. Jessica Beard was third in 50.81.

"I don’t think this was one of my best races," said Richards. "The wind has been tough at Hayward all week. I just wanted to run smart and make sure I brought it home to win. I haven't run a 48 in two or three seasons," she continued, explaining her seasonal goals, "but my number one goal is still to win in Berlin."

Bolt and Powell advance easily in Kingston

27 June 2009 - Kingston, Jamaica - Usain Bolt, the sprint double World record holder, and Asafa Powell, were easy first round winners at the Jamaica trials here at the National Stadium on Friday (26).

Bolt, who ran out of lane six, was an easy winner taking heat one in 10.14 seconds, beating Winston Barnes (10.34).

"It (race) was all right,” he said, adding, "after staying in the blocks so long, I did not want to explode."

In the second heat, Powell, the former men's 100m World record holder, took victory in 10.36 ahead of Kimour Bruce (10.38).

Powell said he achieved his aim, which “was to get out in front and stay there."

Michael Frater took heat three in 10.26 while Yohan Blake won heat four in 10.16.

There were no preliminaries in the women's 100 metres.

In the women's 400m, Shericka Williams (51.88), Novlene Williams-Mills (52.50) and Bobby-Gaye Wilkins (52.39) were the heat winners.

Ricardo Chambers is the leading qualifier with 46.03 in the men’s 400m. Lansford Spence (46.20), Jermaine Gonzales (46.14) and Michael Blackwood (46.43) were other heat winners.

Earlier, in the 400m Hurdles preliminaries, Isa Phillips led the qualifiers into Saturday's final. Phillips won his heat in 48.96 to lead heat two winner Danny McFarlane (49.97) and Dean Griffiths (50.99).

JAM Champs , Day 2

Bolt 9.86 and Fraser 10.88; Walker and Phillips excel over hurdles

Kingston, Jamaica - Beijing Olympic Games champions Usain Bolt and Shelly-Ann Fraser won the men's and women's 100m races in world-leading times at the Jamaica Championships on Saturday (28).

Bolt, who recovered from a slow start to catch up and pass the faster starting Asafa Powell by the half way stage, won in 9.86sec (wind: -0.2m/s).

Bolt, who had time to point both index fingers at chest height, got in ahead of his Beijing's sprint relay teammates Powell (9.97) and Michael Frater (10.02).

"It (race) was good," Bolt said. "The execution was good. I think I got a fairly good start, which was good, because that was always the main problem for me," he added.

"I think I got that right and my drive phase was right. I am now looking forward to get into better shape," added Bolt, whose training was set back after a car accident in April.

Powell was also happy with his result. "It was a fairly good race because I am basically running on one leg, so I'm fairly happy. The aim was just to finish in the top two," he said.

Fraser back to top-form following operation

In the women's event, Fraser running 10.88 (-1.5m/s wind) beat the fast finishing Kerron Stewart, who finished second in 10.93, with Commonwealth Games champion Sheri Ann Brooks, third in 11.16.

Fraser, who had appendix surgery in April, was happy to be back in the fast lane."It has been a bad season for me, frustrating, but my coach has really motivated me," explained a happy Fraser.

Earlier, Olympic 100m silver medallist, Sherone Simpson, in her first race after knee surgery, failed to make it to the final after finishing fifth in her heat in 11.64.

World season lead for Phillips

In the 400m Hurdles, Isa Phillips won the men’s event in a world season leading 48.05, while Olympic champion Melaine Walker took the women’s event edging Kaliese Spencer at 54.70 by .01 of a second.

Kaliese Spencer, who led Walker metres to the tape, was second in 54.71 with Nickiesha Wilson third in 56.01.

Danny McFarlane was second in the men's event, running 48.54, to finish ahead of Josef Robertson (49.22).

Trecia-Kaye Smith, the 2005 World champion won the women's Triple Jump with 14.43m (1.2m/s wind)
in the fourth round. Kimberley Williams was second with 14.04m (1.0), a leap she produced in the fifth round.

US Champs, Day 4

Jackson and Harper headline hurdles

Eugene, USA – On the fourth and final day of the 2009 US Championships in Eugene, Bershawn Jackson ran a new world season leading 48.03sec to win the 400m Hurdles, but he had to do some sprinting to get it.

After a quick start, Jackson came off the last turn third behind NCAA champion Johnny Dutch and Olympic gold medalist Angelo Taylor, and had to run down first Taylor, and then, after the last hurdle, Dutch, in order to get the chance to reclaim the World Championships title he won in 2005.

"I just wanted to get a good performance," said Taylor. "The main thing is making the team. Once you make the team, everything takes care of itself. I ran terribly last summer in Beijing. This summer I want to make it up to myself."

Jackson, Dutch and Clement will all join Kerron Clement as the defending World Champion on the team. With Jackson the 2005 World champion and Taylor the Olympic champion, the last three global champions will all be represented on the U.S. team at the 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics, Berlin, Germany (15 – 23 August)

Taylor was nursing a hamstring injury and professed himself pleased to have made the team. "It's time for me to concentrate on getting ready for the championships," he said, referring to Berlin.

Harper rides tailwind to 12.36

2008 Olympic champion Dawn Harper ran a stunning 12.36sec ahead of a 2.2m/s tailwind in the women's 100m hurdles final, just out-legging Virginia "Ginny" Powell (12.47) at the end of the race. Damu Cherry took third in 12.58, and Michelle Perry, the defending World Champion, advanced from the semi-final but scratched from the final. Her place is assured thanks to her championship in 2007.

"Being healthy this year has been a big difference," said Harper. "This is my first year [where] I've been able to be healthy all the way through, so who knows what I'm capable of in Berlin."

The 100m also lacked 2008 World Indoor champion Lolo Jones, who tangled with Perry in the semifinal and did not finish her heat.

Jones, who had also struggled in Saturday's qualifying rounds, said, "Yesterday I didn’t even feel like I was in the same ballpark so I can only pick myself up and go to Europe and try to salvage my season."

Four men over 21m in the shot

The U.S. Championships has been a deep Shot Put competition since 2000, and this year was no exception. Christian Cantwell set the score early, blasting the ball out to 21.53m on his first attempt and 21.82m in the second round. That would be the winning mark, and second-place Dan Taylor couldn't quite make even Cantwell's second-best distance, putting 21.21 in the second round; defending World champion Reese Hoffa reached 21.10m on his last attempt. With Hoffa in automatically, 2005 World champion Adam Nelson's 21.01m last-round heave will take him to Berlin as well.

"I knew that I had made it on my first throw. After that I said, let's get out of here," said Cantwell.

"(Olympic champion Tomasz Majewski) is going to throw big," said Cantwell of the competition awaiting him in Berlin. "I'm just going to have to throw bigger, and show him who's who."

Crawford, Felix take 200m finals

With defending World champion Tyson Gay opting not to compete in the men's 200m, it was Olympic silver medallist Shawn Crawford who pulled away from the pack as they straightened up past the turn and headed for home. Crawford dominated the second half of the race and came away with another national title, his fourth (he also won in 2001, 2002 and 2004.) Crawford's mark, an eyebrow-raising 19.73, had a 3.3 m/s tailwind, like many speedy races this weekend.

"That's the fastest my body has ever moved in its lifetime, so I'm happy with that," said Crawford.

Gay and Crawford will be joined in Berlin by Charles Clark, whose 20.00 took second, and Wallace Spearmon, who came through the crowded field at the end to finish third in 20.03. Jeremy Wariner, who will defend his World Championship title in the 400m, finished seventh.

Allyson Felix didn't need to run the 200m final to make the team for Berlin, but she did and closed faster than a speedy Muna Lee to win another national title (her fifth). Felix ran 22.02 with a 3.2m/s wind, with Lee completing a second-place double in 22.13; she was also second in the 100m. Marshavet Hooker (22.36) and Charonda Williams (22.39) will join Felix and Lee in Berlin.

Felix was already looking ahead to the showdown in Berlin, saying, "I think we (the American sprint corps) are going to be really strong. I think everyone's spirits are up. We're looking to do a lot coming off a difficult last year. I think that everyone is really excited to get another chance to compete on the world stage."

Stuczynski again

Jenn Stuczynski needed only four vaults to win another national title in the women's pole vault, entering the competition at 4.55m with a second-attempt clearance and then clearing 4.60m and 4.65m, each on the first attempt, to best Chelsea Johnson (4.60m) and Stacey Dragila (4.55m). Stuczynski then moved the bar to 4.86m, which would have been a world leader, but could not clear it.

Stuczynski said she felt fortunate to have competed. "If it was Thursday, Friday or Saturday I would have pulled out. I have so many nagging injuries going on. Today I was able to compete. I am glad it worked out. Now it's time to move on and get healthy."

Bolt completes double; ‘Not 100%’ Veronica Campbell-Brown runs 22.40

Kingston, Jamaica - World triple record holder, Usain Bolt, completed the sprint double while Olympic 200m champion Veronica Campbell-Brown took the women's 200m as the Jamaican Championships ended on Sunday (28).

Bolt strolled to an easy in 20.25 seconds into a -2.5m/s wind to beat Steve Mullings, second in 20.40 and Marvin Anderson, third in 20.63.

"I’m feeling alright,” commented Bolt who ran 9.86 sec to win the 100m on Saturday.

"There were a lot of fast guys behind me so I ran the corner pretty hard and then I came off and saw where I was and shut it down," explained Bolt of his performance.

According to Bolt, he did this because "I’m was a little bit tired because I am not really in the best shape" but maintained "I’m okay."

Campbell-Brown, who after silver two years ago in Osaka is chasing her first World Championships 200m crown in Berlin, ran home first in 22.40 into a headwind of -1.1 m/s. The 100m champion Shelly Ann Fraser finished second in 22.58 with former junior star Simone Facey taking third in 22.96.

Campbell-Brown said: "I’m not 100 percent over the toe injury but it is good enough, I can get the training done."

Kerron Stewart, who was third at last year’s Olympics, did not start, because of a sore ankle, according to her coach Henry Rolle. Sherone Simpson was also a none-starter, but her coach Stephen Francis could not be reached to speak about her withdrawal.

Delloreen Ennis-London won the women’s 100m Hurdles in 12.79sec, running into a headwind of -1.1m/s. Commonwealth Games champion Brigitte Foster Hylton was second in 12.87 with Lacena Golding- Clarke close behind in 12.89.

The 110m Hurdles went to many times winner Maurice Wignall, who raced home in 13.48 (-0.8), defeating Dwight Thomas (13.50) and Richard Phillips (13.61).

Novlene Williams-Mills beat Olympic silver medallist Shericka Williams in the women's 400m running 50.21sec to the latter's (50.39) and Christine Day (51.54).

The men’s title went to Ricardo Chambers in 45.55 in a thriller with Allodin Fothergill, the second place finisher with a time of 45.57 and Lansford Spence (45.78).

Kenia Sinclair won the women’s 800m in 2:01.63.

In the field, Alain Bailey secured the World Championships ‘A’ standard mark of 8.15m, by jumping 8.21 metres. Nicholas Gordon was second with 8.11m and Julian Reid third, also with 8.11m.
