Disappointing outing for Asia

OSAKA: Hopes were high that in a pre-Olympic year Asia would get a much-needed boost with significant breakthroughs at the World Athletics Championships, but there was little to shout about.

After nine days of thrills and spills, Asian competitors could only muster eight medals between them with just two gold, for China and Bahrain.

While home-grown talent in Asia is limited, the region has plenty of imports to carry the torch, with top African runners like Youssef Saad Kamel and Rashid Ramzi now competing for Bahrain.

They failed to deliver the goods, although Bahrain's Maryam Yusuf Jamal, born in Ethiopia, provided consolation on the last day by winning the women's 1,500m.

Japan set an ambitious target of five medals but they won only one, a bronze in the women's marathon.

The star of the show, as widely tipped, was China's Liu Xiang who lived up to expectations by winning the 110m hurdles in 12.95, just outside his own world record.

Another emerging Chinese, Shi Dongpeng, came a credible fifth in the same event but was overshadowed by his more illustrious compatriot. But Japan's Dai Tamesue, who won hurdles bronze in 2001 and 2005, flopped out in the heats.

Liu is Asia's top hope at the Beijing Olympics but there is a danger that too much pressure is being put on his shoulders.

揘owadays there is too much pressure. The others can hide but I'm number one in the world. I win the gold medal here and next year I'm expected to win the Olympics.

揈very time I go out there's pressure on me, I don't get good sleep.

Victorious Americans fire Olympic warning to China

OSAKA: Nine days of sweat and tears at the World Athletics Championships ended with the United States firing a clear warning to China ahead of next year's Olympics.

China have made noises about wanting to overhaul the Americans at the top of the medals table in Beijing, but they won't be making much of a dent on the track and field.

As expected, the United States led the medal haul here with 14 gold. Kenya came second with five, thanks to their incomparable distance runners, while Russia was third. China was a distant 11th with a single gold to Liu Xiang.

In a meet where no world records fell, Tyson Gay was the standout performer, clinching gold medals in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay to cap a breakthrough season and set himself up as the potential star of the Olympics.

He plans to return to Asia some time this season to continue his preparations for the 2008 Games.

Another chance to qualify for Games
By AFTAR SINGH

KUALA LUMPUR: Time is running out for track and field athletes to qualify for the Korat SEA Games.

They have until the end of the month to meet the marks for the Games, which are scheduled to be held from Dec 6-15.

To date, 12 athletes and the 4x100m team have made the grade.

The Malaysian Amateur Athletic Union (MAAU) Open championships, starting today at Stadium Utama in Kangar, will provide opportunities for athletes to qualify for the biennial Games.

But Manila SEA Games 100m hurdles gold medallist Moh Siew Wei (pic) has opted out of the meet for fear of aggravating her injuries.

The 29-year-old, who has been suffering knee injuries since last year, competed in the Asian Track and Field (ATF) championships in Amman in July and clocked 13.68 for fourth place. The Games qualifying mark is 13.58.

The MAAU coaching and development committee chairman, Karim Ibrahim, said: 揈ven if she does not meet the qualifying mark, we will still recommend her for selection for the Games because she is still the best hurdler in the region today.

Asafa powers to new 100m world record

RIETI: Asafa Powell bounced back from his disappointing third place at the world championships when he broke his 100 metres world record with a time of 9.74 seconds yesterday.

The Jamaican Commonwealth champion set the record in his heat at the Rieti IAAF Grand Prix and then went on to win the final in 9.78.

Powell had previously shared the record of 9.77 with American Olympic champion Justin Gatlin, who has been banned for eight years for doping pending the result of an arbitration hearing.

At the Osaka world championships last month, Powell finished third behind American Tyson Gay and Derrick Atkins of the Bahamas in the final.

The 24-year-old admitted at the time that he had given up during the Osaka race but said he would make amends by breaking his world record before the end of the year.

The Jamaican, who won silver in the Osaka relay as Gay and the US team took gold, has never won a global title.

He was disqualified for a false start in the quarter-finals of the 2003 world championships after setting the fastest time of 10.05 in the heats.

Powell then finished fifth in the 2004 Olympic final behind Gatlin before missing the 2005 world championships through injury.

However, he won the Commonwealth 100m title in Melbourne in March last year and had run 9.77 three times, in June 2005, June 2006 and Aug 2006, before this latest record

Jamaican sprinter Powell says he can go faster

ROME: Jamaican Asafa Powell set a new men's world 100m record of 9.74 at the IAAF Grand Prix at Rieti, Italy, on Sunday weekend and then stated he can get faster.

Far from resting on his laurels by his performance in Italy when he beat his old mark of 9.77 set in Athens in June 2005, Powell said he is capable of running significantly quicker.

Ohuruogu may compete for Nigeria

LONDON: World 400m champion Christine Ohuruogu (pic) says she is proud to run for Britain but has not dismissed the idea of competing for another country.

Ohuruogu returned to action at the World Championships in Osaka, Japan last month to claim gold after completing a one-year ban for missing three doping tests.

However, under British Olympic Association (BOA) rules any athlete committing a doping offence faces a lifetime ban from the Olympics and Ohuruogu had hinted that she could run for Nigeria if her appeal against the suspension is unsuccessful.

揃ritain will be my first choice and I wouldn't want to run for anyone else because this is where I grew up,

Burns runs his personal best to clinch 100m victory

LINZ (Austria): Marc Burns ran his personal best of the season to win the 100m in 10.18 at the Intersport Gugl athletics meet here on Tuesday.

In heavy conditions due to rain and cold, the 24-year-old Trinidadian beat Matic Osovnikar of Slovenia, who was 16-hundredths of a second behind, and American Darvis Patton, who was third in 10.36.

Despite a fierce headwind, David Robles of Cuba set a meet record by winning the 110m hurdles in 13.05, eclipsing the 15-year-old mark of Mark McKoy by a hundredth of a second.

Headwind blows away Powell抯 record attempt

BRUSSELS: Jamaican Asafa Powell remained upbeat after unfavourable conditions compromised his bid to break his world 100m record at the fifth leg of the Golden League meeting on Friday.

Powell posted a winning time of 9.84 to finish ahead of Norwegian Jaysuma Saidy Ndure and Jamaican Michael Frater, the field racing in a headwind of 0.3 m/s in temperatures of 17癈.

Powell had set a new 100m world record of 9.74 in Italy last Sunday and said he could go faster, possibly as fast as 9.68.

But the combination of a false start, and the unfavourable conditions conspired against him.

Meseret Defar

揑 was unsettled by the false start, and the weather really wasn't very favourable. Given the circumstances 9.84 is a great time,

Isinbayeva, Richards share jackpot

BERLIN: Russian pole-vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva and American 400m runner Sanya Richards secured half shares in a US$1mil jackpot when they completed perfect Golden League seasons on Sunday.

Cheered on by a crowd of over 70,000 at Berlin's Olympiastadion, Isinbayeva, the Olympic and double world champion, cleared 4.82m to see off Monika Pyrek of Poland and fellow Russian Svetlana Feofanova.

Richards, the only other athlete still bidding for a sixth win in Golden League meetings, won on the blue track in 49.27 seconds, the fastest women's 400 of the year and more than a second ahead of Britain's world champion Christine Ohuruogu.

Victory capped a second jackpot season in succession for Richards, who scooped a US$250,000 share of the money last year.
