5 most endangered species in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: Five of the 10 animals and plants most threatened by the illegal wildlife trade are in Malaysia.

Anti-clockwise) The Malayan tiger, elephant, orang utan, Asian rhino and
red and pink corals (centre).

The tiger, Asian rhinoceros, elephant and orang utan are included in the top 10 list released by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) International, together with a red and pink jewel-like coral species, Corallium borneense. All are found in Malaysia.

"Malaysia抯 global position in providing habitat to some of the most charismatic and endangered flagship mammal species, such as the tiger, Asian elephant and orang utan has to be recognised and emphasised," said WWF-Malaysia抯 National Programme Director Dr Arun Venkataraman.

The list was released ahead of the annual Conference of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, to be held from June 3 to June 15 in The Hague, the Netherlands.

Representatives from 171 countries are expected to attend.
The tiger and Asian rhino have been threatened for decades because of poaching and illegal trade.

Others, particularly marine species, are on the list because their populations have declined drastically in recent years.

According to WWF-Malaysia, tigers are at risk because of a loss of habitat and forest conversion. And an old threat has re-emerged which could sound the death knell for the species

Rare whale sighted off Malaysia

KUCHING: The humpback whale, an endangered marine mammal, has been sighted for the first time in Malaysia, off the Miri coast.

The dark-grey whale, which was spotted by a team of aerial marine life surveyors on June 24, is at least 10m in length.

Universiti Malaysia Sabah marine mammal and fishery services' lecturer Dr Saifullah A. Jaaman said it was easy to identify the humpback whale due to its distinct physical features and behaviour.

``The flippers of the humphack whale make up about one-third of its body.

``When it dives, it brings up its tail,'' he told reporters at the Sarawak Forestry office at the Hock Lee Centre here on Thursday.

Dr Saifullah, the survey team's technical advisor, said the descriptions by a team member who sighted the mammal fitted well with that of the humpback whale.

He said the migratory humpback whales, which feed on small fish, had been sighted in the Philippines waters before.

The team spent about 30 hours on a Cassna aircraft for the survey, stretching from Lawas in northern Sarawak to Tanjung Datu in the southern region.

Sarawak Forestry's chief wildlife warden Wilfred Landong described as ``most exciting'' the sightings of the humpack whale and several other marine wildlife.

Landong said the team recorded nearly 60 sightings, which included 13 individual dugongs in three groups, seven whales, some 140 dolphins of four species, nine rays, six sharks and 13 marine turtles.

``There were two sightings of Bryde whales off Pulau Talang-Talang and sightings of three other Balaen and unidentified whales of Miri and Mukah,'' he added.

wow kalau memang sighted humpback whale --
what an excellent discovery --

whales banyak kat pacific ocean the other side
close to perairan di victoria harbour or north vancouver island -
saya dah pergi whale watching and it was awesome!!

whale ni memang hampir extinct especially kalau dia tersesat
terdampar kat pantai -- sebab berat bukan main nak hantar
balik kat ocean --

*teringat cerita free willy -- whale yang nama kiko tu!!
unfortunately - dalam ltu depa nak free whale tu
real life depa captured and kiko pun dah mati lama dah -

whale ni kena leave it be di laut - itu habitatnya --

Experts link low sperm count to rhinos going extinct

KOTA KINABALU, Thurs:
Low sperm count among the male Sumatran rhinoceros in Sabah may be the reason why it抯 going extinct.

To compound the problem, experts have also found that many female rhinos have cysts in their reproductive organs.

These were among the observations recorded in a three-year study spearheaded by the State Wildlife Department here.

"That is the current direction of our ongoing studies but we are curious to learn more," said deputy Wildlife Department director Laurentius Ambu yesterday.

Ambu said while many would tend to link the conditions affecting the rhinos

Yang dah pupus terus dr mesia pun ada. Contoh :-
1. banteng
2. badak jawa

yang hampir pupus terus :-
1. Badak sumatra. Tinggal baper ekor saja kat semenanjung dan sabah. Dulu ada buat pusat badak kat selangor utk tujuan pembiakan. tapi semua badak tu habis mati.

2. Harimau Belang
dikatakan berjumlah kurang dr 500 ekor sahaja yg tinggal. Semuanya ada di semenanjung. Borneo takde harimau (aku nak perbetul posting yg sebelum ni yg kata ada harimau diborneo...yg baru dijumpai itu adalah gajah. Bukan harimau yer..)
