Magnificent abode for royals
Fauziah Ismail
AFTER two articles on palaces in the city and in Singapore, I didn't think I would be writing another on that subject. But I was wrong. I received emails asking if I have background information on several other palaces in and around the city.
Istana Pasir Pelangi
When I was doing my research on Istana Tyersall and Istana Woodneuk in Singapore, I had written to Datuk Abdul Rahim Ramli.
The former Johor state secretary, who is now the secretary of the Johor Council of Royal Court and Chancellor of the Most Honourable Order of the Crown of Johor, wrote back giving me more than what I had bargained for.
Besides information on Istana Tyersall and Istana Woodneuk in Singapore (MyJohor, Jan 12) and Istana Bukit Serene (Jan 19), he wrote about the other palaces, some of which no longer exist.
How many of us know that there was a palace opposite the present harbourmaster's office in Jalan Skudai?
The palace, according to Rahim, was called Istana Menara Empat because it took the shape of four towers. It was also known as Istana Laut or Istana Pantai.
"When Sultan Abu Bakar moved his administration in 1858 from Telok Belanga, the offices were housed on the ground floor of the throne room of the Istana Besar. Later, the offices, except for the Treasury, were moved to this building (Istana Menara Empat).
"After the Customs office moved to its new buildings in Jalan Ah Fook in 1911, the building was turned into the English College (a boarding school) before it moved to its present site in 1913.
"One can still see part of the concrete steps of the demolished building on the hillside leading to the Straits View hotel," Rahim said.
As for the Istana Besar (I will be writing a separate article on this later), there were two palaces within its grounds, namely Istana Zahrah (built in 1886 by Sultan Abu Bakar in honour of his sister) and Istana Semayam.
Sultan Abu Bakar and his family had moved from Telok Belanga into Istana Zahrah on May 27, 1889.
"A feature of Istana Zahrah was the audience room that was designed like a clove, thus the name Balai Cengkeh or Balai Zahrah. Sultanah Khatijah was crowned there and the event was witnessed by female guests only as decreed by Sultan Abu Bakar.
"It was also the venue for the proclamation of Sultan Ibrahim on Sept 7, 1895, as the Sultan of Johor," Rahim wrote.
The istana was turned into the Bukit Zahrah English School in 1913 at the same time the English College opened its doors. In the 1970s, the school was turned into a religious school but has since closed.
As for Istana Semayam, Rahim said the late Sultan Ismail and his son, current ruler Sultan Iskandar, were born at the palace.
The building was partially destroyed by artillery fire from the retreating British Army in Singapore in 1942. The structure has since been demolished.
Rahim also said that there was another palace constructed by Sultan Ibrahim on the northern part of the Istana Besar garden opposite the jail. Called the Istana Marble, it is now the office of the superintendent of gardens.
There was also the Istana Bukit Jepon at Jalan Petri that Sultan Ibrahim built in 1937 and three palaces on Coombe Hill next to the Catholic Church.
It was known as Istana Bukit Coombe and later renamed Istana Bukit Iskandar. Sultan Iskandar stayed at the palace before he ascended to the throne.
The buildings, based on Dutch design, were used as the residence of the Kempetai (Japanese Secret Police) during the war. The buildings were demolished in 1987.
Sultan Ibrahim also built the Istana Pasir Pelangi in 1911, complete with stables for his horses and garages for his cars and trucks. During the war, Sultan Ibrahim and his consort, Lady Marcella, stayed there after moving out of Istana Bukit Serene.
The palace is now the official residence of the Tunku Mahkota of Johor Tunku Ibrahim.
Sultan Ibrahim also built Istana Bukit Kesenangan in Jalan Abdul Samad. The building has since been demolished and the area converted into an up-market residential enclave.
Rahim also pointed out that Sultan Abu Bakar's Privy Council had residences within the city and the residences all have quaint names.
Johor's first menteri besar Datuk Jaafar Mohammad stayed in Sri Gambir at Bukit Bintang where Sultan Ibrahim's third son, Tunku Temenggong Ahmad, was born on July 29, 1898. Tunku Temenggong Ahmad's mother, Che' Dara Hasana, was Jaafar's daughter. <<--- part ni interesting
Sultan Abu Bakar's nephew Ungku Sulaiman Daud's residence was called Sri Ledang, also in Bukit Bintang within the palace gardens.
The Menteri Besar later built another residence named Senyum at Bukit Senyum.
The Dato' Bentara Dalam Ibrahim Munshi's residence in Jalan Air Molek was known as Sri Kopi while Datuk Captain Daud Sulaiman, a nephew of Sultan Abu Bakar, stayed at Taban Tunggal in Gertak Merah.
Johor's first state secretary Datuk Seri Amar Di Raja Abdul Rahman Andak's residence was known as Sri Lallang.
It was given to Sultan Ibrahim when Abdul Rahman went into exile in London where he died in 1930.
When Ibrahim's sister Tunku Ampuan Besar Mariam stayed there, the residence was renamed as Istana Mastika Embun. Later, it became Kolej Tunku Ampuan Mariam.
