KUALA LUMPUR, 19 Jan -- CERIA ... Menteri Wilayah Persekutuan dan Kesejahteraan Bandar, Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin (tengah) bergambar kenangan bersama sebahagian penerima sumbangan pada majlis sumbangan 1Malaysia sempena Tahun Baru Cina 2012 di Pusat Komuniti Bandar Tun Razak di sini, hari ini.Seramai 300 orang terdiri daripada golongan ibu tunggal, orang kurang upaya (OKU), warga emas, dan keluarga berpendapatan rendah menerima sumbangan wang tunai berjumlah RM300 seorang. |

PUTRAJAYA, 27 Jan -- Menteri Wilayah Persekutuan dan Kesejahteraan Bandar, Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin (dua, kiri) bersama Presiden Perbadanan Putrajaya, Tan Sri Samsuddin Osman (kiri) selepas menandatangani belon sebagai simbolik pelancaran Pesta Belon Udara Panas Antarabangsa Putrajaya 2012 di sini hari ini.Pesta yang bertemakan 1World, 1Malaysia, 1Fiesta itu diadakan selama empat hari bermula 15 Mac sehingga 18 Mac bertempat di Monumen Alaf Baru, Putrajaya.Sehingga kini lebih dari 20 buah belon berwarna warni dan pelbagai bentuk dari seluruh dunia akan menyertai pesta belon antarabangsa buat kali keempat itu. |

Mutual understanding is the key

SOCIETY in general has the misconception that people who enter into inter-racial marriages are losing his or her identity and culture. But this is not always true. StarMetro speaks to Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin who is happily married to Datin Nafesah Raja Nong Chik, a Chinese convert.
HE was only 19 when he first laid eyes on Yee Mee Lin. His Chinese college mates from the Royal Military College (RMC) had brought him along for a friend’s birthday party in Pudu and after after an introduction to Mee Lin, he was smitten.
Today, after 35 years of marriage, Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin is still smitten by Mee Lin or who is now better known as Datin Nafesah Raja Nong Chik.
After their first introduction in 1972, their romance blossomed. He was with the RMC and she was a student of Bukit Bintang Girls School. They shared many interests and were both interested in pursuing their higher education in accountancy and economics and headed to the United Kingdom.
After graduating, they returned home and tied the knot in 1976. They had a traditional Malay wedding ceremony and since Nafesah comes from a traditional family they also had a Chinese wedding complete with the tea drinking ceremony!

“It was unique,” Nong Chik recalled of the tea drinking ceremony.
“Very different but I had fun.”
On what attracted him to Nafesah, Nong Chik said: “She is different.”
Like most mixed marriages, the issue of culture and religion often becomes an issue but with Nong Chik and Nafesah, it has never been so. The couple live in harmony and this can be attributed to the fact that both of them have accepted their differences and cultural background.
“Understanding one another is the key to any relationship,” he said.
“Misconceptions, misunderstanding and racial overtones often result in unnecessary problems and all this can be overcome if people understood the different cultures better,’’ he said.
Nong Chik draws inspiration from his wife’s family and said there are many values that can be learnt from the Chinese community.
“Nafesah had some misconceptions about the Malays and after getting to know me and my family and culture, she understands and respects the Malay culture. In fact, she is a more devout Muslim than me,’’ he said.
The minister explained that many conflicts happen because of misunderstanding and these lead to other problems.

“To overcome such problems, I would like to suggest that the Government introduces the study of Chinese and Indian culture and customs into the school curriculum. Then, the young generation can have a better understanding of the different cultures in Malaysia early in life,” he said.
“It is good to start young. I see it in my children every day and I am proud of my children Raja Farhana and Raja Hamzah who have a mutual respect for their Chinese and Indian friends and are able to mingle and interact with them easily and freely without prejudice.
Although they do not celebrate Chinese New Year on a grand scale, the Nong Chiks make it a point to visit their Chinese relatives during the period.
“When my in-laws were alive, we used to have our reunion dinners together.
“Nafesah’s mother will prepare a halal meal for everyone but we don’t do that anymore,” he said.
But there are some traditions that Nong Chik follows diligently and one is the giving of ang pow.
“It is customary for married couples to give ang pow to the children and is a goodwill gesture for luck and prosperity,’’ he added.
This year however, the minister and his family will be taking a break from the rat race and are going on a holiday.
The celebration this year is extra special because Nong Chik was born on Feb 14 and will be a triple celebration for the minister and his family since Valentine’s Day also falls on the first day of CNY. |
