Extra buses for Raya too costly

KUALA LUMPUR: Thousands may not be able to balik kampung during the Hari Raya season if express bus operators are left to bear the burden of the recent five-sen diesel price hike.

Konsortium Transnasional Berhad (KTB), the largest public bus operator in the country with a fleet of 750 express buses, yesterday said it might not increase the number of express buses to serve passengers if its request to revert the subsidised diesel price to RM1.43 was not met.

KTB chairman and managing director Datuk Mohd Nadzmi Mohd Salleh said the bus industry had already been hit badly and the recent fuel price hike would further increase operational costs by RM3 million.

"Every five-sen increase will cost us RM3 million. We suffered huge losses last year. Our revenue has also dropped because too many licences have been issued and now, there are just too many bus companies. Bus operators find this very frustrating."

He said the idea of not providing extra coaches -- a total of 16,000 seats each day during the festive season -- was not meant as a threat or a demand to increase fares.

"It is a way to cope with increasing costs."

Nadzmi said the bus business, which is regulated by the government, was facing tremendous difficulty because more bus companies meant reduced profit.

"The industry is not going anywhere. What is the point of continuing to regulate the industry when, at the same time, you are issuing too many licences? People are losing money."

The price of subsidised diesel went from 65 sen per litre in 2005 to RM1.43 in 2006. It is now RM1.48.

Bus operators have been lamenting the increase in cost of maintenance, tyres and spare parts, bus terminal rental and labour as well as the insufficient fuel quota for subsidised diesel.

KTB executive director and chief operating officer Tengku Hasmadi Tengku Hashim said forward sales of express bus tickets for Hari Raya had been put on hold in case fuel prices were increased further.

KTB sells up to 40,000 tickets a day during the Hari Raya season, compared with just 24,000 tickets on a normal day.

"We were supposed to start selling the tickets last weekend but if we sell tickets now, and if the diesel price goes up by five sen again next month, we may no longer be able to bear the cost," Tengku Hasmadi said.

He said the operation of city and stage buses in Kelantan, Negri Sembilan, Kedah, Seberang Prai, western Selangor and central Pahang could even be stopped if nothing was done to bridge the financial problems faced by the industry players.

He said stage buses were the hardest hit, with losses amounting to RM28 million reported last year.

"This price hike came as a surprise to us, unlike the previous increase when the government gave us notice in advance. We want a dialogue with the authorities on what can be done to help this situation."

    banyak pilihan utk pengguna tak bagus, tapi banyak untung utk pengusha2 bas tertentu tuh yang lebih penting bagi depa kot :@

tambang = di kawal. disel sabsidi kataNya. sudahnye beli teket RM 40 surcharge aje yg tak masuk dlm printed teket RM 40 extra.


kenape ini berlaku? sbb sabsidilah. vodo takbleh di ajar.

sebab tu ai x paham. sepatutnya persaingan yg akan bagi untung untuk pengguna. sebab banyak pilihan sykt2 ni kena bersaing la. x kan nak idup senang goyang kaki dgn monopoli.

maybe maksudnya.... akan berlaku persaingan harga yg sihat diklgn pengusaha bus.... secara teori jer kot
rasanya lebih separuh yg naik bus express ni student la kan....

principlenya, time raya adalah untuk berkumpul adek badek, sedara mara....so, kat memana pung ok....

Aku pun rasa macam tambang bas kat sana terlalu murah lah. Bayangkan dulu aku naik dari KL pegi Penang, RM22 jer one way. Skarang mgkin dah RM40 paling mahal pon. Kalau kat Sarawak nie, dgn jarak begitu, rasanya dalam RM55 camtu dah kot.
