Have you stopped to consider that maybe people aren't voting for Cate because she practically asked them not to in her Critics' Choice Awards acceptance speech? Cate knows not getting an Oscar this year changes nothing for her- it's not going to change what roles she's offered or her clout in the industry or even who watches Tár. But for Michelle Yeoh, becoming an Oscar winning actress would literally get her a seat at tables she never had access to before, tables she didn't have access to not because Yeoh didn't have talent equal to those already at the table but because of the gatekeepers who controlled access to the table.
The truth is the lack of inclusivity cost us great performances. We can only imagine what could have been if The Good Earth had Chinese actors in the leading roles or imagine the films from stories that weren't adapted because they featured Asian characters. It's not Hollywood who is pushing the narrative that inclusivity and diversity come at the cost of merit. It's disturbing how some right wing voices have celebrated Tár as anti-woke and anti-cancel culture. We need to be careful not to let them use this year's award season to further push their narrative of rase-based scapegoating.
