Aston Villa manager Alex McLeish says Liverpool aren't interest in signing striker Darren Bent during the January transfer window.

The England international has been linked with a move to Anfield this winter, following the eight-match ban being handed to Luis Suarez.

Bent has scored six times for Villa this season, but McLeish is adamant the 27-year-old is staying put and not considering a move to Liverpool.

“People like to speculate and use social networking sites and they are having a field day," McLeish said.

“If there is anybody that wants him they certainly haven’t contacted me and Darren has said he wants to stay at the club.

“Whenever I have asked anyone outside the club I’ve been told flatly ‘No’.

“I have spoken to Kenny and he said there was nothing in it."

Bent made a controversial ￡18 million move from Sunderland to Aston Villa during last year's January transfer window, and rumours have been abound that he was set to make another January move.

Along with the long ban for Suarez, fellow strikers Dirk Kuyt, who is yet to net in the Premier League this season, and Andy Carroll, have shown little form in front of goal for Liverpool, leading to rumours concerning the club's striking options for the remainder of the campaign.

The likes of Valencia's Roberto Saldado have also been linked with a switch to Liverpool.

Ghana youth midfielder Mumuni Abubakar is set for a two-week trial with Liverpool according to GHANAsoccernet.com.

The 18-year-old was recently voted the Sport Writers Association's Ghana Premier League Player of the Year for 2011, and is tipped for a bright future in the game.

Abubakar caught the eye of Liverpool scouts playing for Ghana's U20 side in Italy back in November, and Reds boss Kenny Dalglish is keen to take a closer look at the African ace, inviting him to spend some time at Anfield.


Despite his tender age, Abubakar already captains his current side New Edubiase United, and will be looking to earn himself a move to the Barclays Premier League before the close of the transfer window.

"Liverpool will assess him for ten days and then take a decision but I'm confident he's not coming back to Ghana," confirmed Fifa agent Oliver Arthur.

"I understand he had a good game yesterday [Saturday] against Medema in the Ghana Premier League and so his fitness level cannot be questioned.

"He is a promising player and I wish him all the best."

Newcastle United striker Demba Ba is a target for Liverpool, according to The Metro.

The Senegalese international, who has scored 15 goals in the Barclays Premier League season, has assisted Newcastle impressive form during the first-half of the season.

Such form has sparked rumours a move to elsewhere in the Premier League, with the likes of Liverpool mentioned in dispatches.

Talk that Ba's release clause at the Sports Direct Arena could be less than the ￡10 million reported over the weekend has reportedly sparked interest from Liverpool, who are looking for a striker to assist their New Year top four push.

With Luis Suarez having recently begun his eight-match ban for racially abusing Patrice Evra, Dirk Kuyt without a Premier League goal this season and Andy Carroll yet to fire on all cylinders since his switch from Newcastle United, Liverpool Champions League aspirations could rely on the club finding a goal getter in the January transfer window.

However, reports suggest that Ba isn't the man for that role, with the striker's presence at the African Cup of Nations likely to make a deal this month unlikely.

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew said: "He's a Newcastle player, he has been brilliant for us and that's all I want to say, really."

Jawad Boukabous and Roberto Saldado have both been linked with moves to Liverpool of late.

Liverpool are set to make a shock move for Chelsea striker Salomon Kalou as they aim to steal him from under the noses of Arsenal and Paris St Germain.

Arsene Wenger was confident of landing the Ivory Coast star, who has found himself surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge this season under new Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas.

But talkSPORT has been told Liverpool have now made an enquiry for the 26-year-old, who is out of contract at the end of the season.

Kenny Dalglish views Kalou as a financially sound alternative to a possible bid for Darren Bent, who could cost in excess of ￡25m, and likes the fact he can play as either a second striker or out wide.

PSG have also been monitoring the situation and could be an attractive alternative for Kalou with a host of former Chelsea men already at the French giants, including new boss Carlo Ancelotti, Claude Makelele and ex-Blues coach Paul Clement.

Liverpool have reportedly moved to allay their goal scoring woes with a loan move for Inter Milan striker Luc Castaignos - a transfer target for Everton.

The Anfield club's leading goalscorer Luis Suarez has just started an eight-game ban, while ￡35m striker Andy Carroll has struggled for form in his year at Anfield and has scored just four goals in 22 appearances.

Castaignos, 19, joined Inter rom Feyenoord in the summer and has drawn comparisons with Thierry Henry for his physical stature and blistering pace.

talkSPORT revealed earlier this week that Everton were on the trail of the teenage Dutchman, but their Merseyside rivals have now entered the fray.

Inter are believed to be unwilling to let the teenager leave on a permanent deal but a loan could suit them if he is guaranteed to gain some first-team experience under Kenny Dalglish.

Liverpool have joined the race for Dijon midfielder Benjamin Corgnet, according to French sports daily L'Equipe.

The 24-year-old who was playing amateur football two years ago, has already attracted the interest of Lyon and Newcastle United, with the pair consistently linked with the midfielder.

But now Liverpool are taking a close interest in Corgnet and have had the Thionville native watched several times recently.

The Reds Director of Football Damien Comolli is well aware of the player's rise up the French football pyramid and has taken note of his impressive feats in Ligue 1 with newly promoted Dijon this season.

Craig Bellamy was today crowned Standard Chartered's player of the month for December.




The Welsh international scooped the award after tallying 44 per cent of the total votes cast, and he finished ahead of Martin Skrtel who came second with 18 per cent while Jose Enrique was third (11 per cent).

Liverpool's No.39 enjoyed a fine month and ended it by netting twice against his former club Newcastle United at Anfield in the final game of 2011.

He also produced an assist with a corner for Martin Skrtel's superb header away at Aston Villa.

After receiving his award at Melwood, Bellamy told Liverpoolfc.tv: "I'm happy, it's a nice trophy and it's nice to get the acknowledgements.

"It's been a half decent month for me and anytime at a club like this to get the Player of the Month award is a great honour.

"December is always a tricky month as there is a lot of games and I have had the opportunity to play quite a bit and play a good role.

"I've kept myself in good shape and the manager and the coaching staff have been brilliant with me and lucky enough for me I've been able to have an impact on certain games as well."

Manchester City will be without influential skipper Vincent Kompany for both legs of the Carling Cup semi-final against Liverpool, after the FA rejected an appeal against his four-match ban.

The City defender was sent-off during Sunday's FA Cup 3rd round defeat to Manchester United, and will now sit out the next four games.

Roberto Mancini is also without Yaya Toure and Kole Toure who are away on African Nations Cup duty.
