PT DI Gains from Airbus-Boeing Competition

Bandung, West Java - PT Dirgantara Indonesia has benefited from the growth in demand for the manufacturing components of Airbus and Boeing.

"The two aircraft giants have outsourced the production of various components to many companies worldwide, including PT DI," the head of the company's public relations division, Rakhendi Triyatna, said here on Tuesday.

He noted that the demand for manufacturing components of Airbus and Boeing had risen in line with the increasing needs of commercial aircraft, whose numbers would reach 4,000 in the period of 2010-15 alone.

"The competition between Airbus and Boeing seems to be tight, with Airbus representing the European consortium, and Boeing the US," Rakhendi said.

"The two have been competing maximally to secure markets with a variety of products, such as A-380 by Airbus and Dreamliner B-787 by Boeing," he added.

Rakhendi said the two companies outsourced the production of 70% of their components to various countries such as Japan, Australia, China, South Korea, Canada, Britain and Indonesia.

"The cooperation is solely aimed at reducing costs in order to lower the price of aircraft," he explained.

In the A-380 project, Rakhendi said, PT DI had been named as the sole supplier for Inboard Outer Fixed Leading Edge (IOFLE), which is the key part of the plane¿s wings. "The A-380 plane cannot fly without this component," he added.

Rakhendi explained that PT DI manufactured the component based on a contract with Spirit AeroSystems, Britain, which was signed in 2002, for 300 shipments.

"So far, PT DI has made 125 shipments,¿ he said, adding that the target was of 36 shipments a year.

With regard to A-320/A-321 project, the contract for cooperation in the manufacturing and assembling of D-Nose, Pylon, and Leading Edge was signed with Spirit AeroSystems in 2005" with a target of 365 shipments a year ¿ and would expire in 2015.

In the A-350 project, PT DI manufactures Root End Fillet Fairing (REFF) and will make 805 shipments, with 51 a year, as per the contract with Spirit AeroSystems since 2010.

For Airbus A-350, PT DI has also received an order for a design engineering-related job.

From Boeing, PT DI has received several orders for leading edge skin for the B747-8 aircraft, with a planned shipment of 18 sets a year, under a contract from 2008 through 2017.

In this project, PT DI manufactured components for the front part of the plane¿s wings from 2005-11. PT DI has also been manufacturing similar components for the B-777 plane, based on a contract effective as of 2008 through 2012.

"Generally they have been satisfied with what PT DI has done and now we have become their trusted partner. So, automatically, PT DI's reputation has improved and drawn the attention of decision makers in world-class industries," Rakhendi said.(*)

PT DI Terlibat Dalam Rancang Bangun Airbus A350

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID,BANDUNG--PT Dirgantara Indonesia (Persero), Rabu, mencatat sejarah baru dan "naik kelas" dengan menjadi mitra rancang bangun setara bagi Airbus, dalam pembuatan A350. PT DI bukan lagi sekedar pembuat komponen (manufacturing) seperti sebelumnya.

Langkah maju PT DI itu ditandai penandatanganan memorandum kesepahaman antara PT DI dengan Airbus Industrie di Jakarta, yang menjadi salah satu agenda dalam kunjungan kenegaraan PM Inggris, David Cameron, yang disertai 30 pebisnis utama Inggris, termasuk dari Airbus.

PT DI dalam penandatanganan yang berlangsung di Istana Negara itu diwakili Direktur Teknologi dan Pengembangan PT DI, Ardonni Jafri. Kini, selain mampu membuat komponen untuk pesawat Airbus, PT DI dipercaya untuk berkontribusi dalam rancang bangun pesawat Airbus A350.

Bicara soal Airbus ini, konsep dan praktis pengendalian pesawat terbang dua awak (two men cockpit) berbasis sistem elektronika (fly by wire) jajaran pesawat komersial A-300 buatan konsorsium penerbangan Eropa ini diprakarsai tokoh kedirgantaraan nasional, Wiweko Supomo.

Supomo, yang pernah menjadi direktur utama PT Garuda Indonesian Airways (saat itu) juga sahabat kental Nurtanio, pendiri PT DI, yang kemudian namanya sempat diabadikan menjadi pusat unggulan industri kedirgantaraan satu-satunya di Asia Tenggara itu.

Mengomentari perkembangan pesat PT DI itu, Direktur Utama PT DI, Budi Santoso, menggarisbawahinya sebagai langkah awal menuju status sebagai kontraktor rancang bangun bagi Airbus.

"Pekerjaan rancang bangun ini akan menjadi langkah awal sebagai kontraktor rancang bangun bagi pesawat-pesawat Airbus," katanya.

Bukan hanya itu, Santoso yakin kesepakatan yang ditandatangani pihaknya dengan Airbus juga berharap PTDI menjadi pemasok tier-1 (tingkat 1) bagi Airbus.

Ardonni, mengatakan kesepakatan itu secara khusus ditujukan dalam rancang bangun pengembangan pesawat Airbus A350, jenis pesawat berbadan lebar berteknologi masa depan, yang dimulai tahun ini juga.

Pesawat A350 itu sendiri kini masih dalam tahap perancangan, dimana PT DI akan menyertakan para insinyurnya sebagai pemikir-pemikir dan penghitung bagian-bagian dari pesawat masa depan tersebut.

"Kami kini masuki tahapan kerja kerah putih, tak lagi kerah biru," kata Ardonni.

Dia menambahkan, selain mengangkat nama bangsa dalam teknologi rekayasa pesawat terbang, PT DI kini mendapatkan nilai tambah 60 persen lebih besar dari hasil pekerjaaan yang dilakukan para personilnya dalam proyek rekayasa seperti itu

Menurut dia, pengakuan Airbus tersebut bukan hal mudah karena sebelum memutuskan menjadikan PT DI mitra rancang bangun, Airbus telah turun ke PT DI di Bandung dan mengaudit sistem yang digunakan PT DI guna mengukur kemampuan rancang bangunnya.

Sebelumnya, sejak 2002 PT DI telah dipercaya membuat berbagai komponen untuk struktur Airbus A320/321/330/30/350 dan bahkan pesawat berlantai dua dan terbesar di dunia A380 sejak tahun 2002 yang diperoleh lewat Spirit (saat ini BAe System) dan juga dari CTRM Malaysia.
