Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop said this was because most of those involved in fatal road accidents were in the productive age group of 15 to 30, who could contribute much to the country.
"On the average, a death due to a road accident could cost the government some RM1.43 million in losses, which is money spent money from the time the victim was born, and on his education and hospital treatment.
"The amount is only for each ordinary person killed and does not include professionals, as the government would also lose highly-skilled workers or specialists who are able to generate the country's economy," he said here yesterday.
Earlier, Nor Mohamed had launched a road safety campaign organised by the Road Safety Department (RSD) at the Sungai Dua Toll Plaza. Also present was Penang RSD director S. Jegan.
Nor Mohamed, who is also Tasek Gelugor member of parliament, said the money lost to road accidents could have been used for development, such as providing basic facilities for the people.
He said road accidents could be avoided if road users took preventive measures such as obeying traffic rules, driving carefully and being patient on the road.
"The government also does not want families to suffer by losing their breadwinner," he added and called on road users to be careful when returning to their hometowns for Hari Raya. Bernama
