Its director Datuk Hassan Yaacob said the fatal road accidents involved all kinds of vehicles and they were due to lack of driving experience and the attitude of the drivers who disliked obeying traffic rules.
"Those having a driving licence for more than five years have more experience in handling their vehicles," he told a news conference, here, today.
He said 17 per cent of the fatal road accidents involved those with less than one year of driving experience -- the P licence holders.
"Most of these drivers are young and excited about driving that they forget about their safety and that of others," he added.
Meanwhile, he said, as part of its enforcement effort, Penang RTD would install blinkers at three main accident-prone roads so that road users could see the presence of enforcement officers during this festive season's road safety operation.
"It will be a continuous operation from Aug 12 to 26 along Jalan Tun Sardon in Balik Pulau, the Butterworth outer ring road and Jalan Butterworth-Taiping."
Hassan said Penang RTD had also formed a special team to pose as express bus passengers in monitoring the drivers for traffic offences.
He said it would also station 10 enforcement officers at the state's main bus terminal to check on the buses' tyres, brakes, log book, second driver, driving licence, road tax and permit. -- Bernama
