Kajol not invited to the Jab Tak Hai Jaan premiere

Finally the grand week of Diwali arrives and it is time to relish the Big Fat bollywood films 'Jab Tak Hain Jaan' and 'Son of Sardaar' which are literally fighting it out for screens and audiences this week.

As the star-studded JTHJ premiere began with style, there was something amiss. Kajol, the main lead of the all-time YRF hit DDLJ was not present as she was apparently not invited. This is the result of the legal battle between Yash Raj Films and Ajay Devgn Ffilms for screens. Thus, Kajol, a YRF favorite, ended up being a member of the enemy camp.

Kajol's sister Tanisha confirmed this news by retweeting, "@Tanishaa003 Kajol was da leading lady of DDLJ... we condemn such shameful act decide by rani, srk, yash ji family, uday and adi".

It is indeed disappointing to see relationships changing in Bollywood due to unhealthy competition. That, when there is so much space and demand for everyone in this industry that has a viewership of many billions...

After having “dated” Aditya Chopra for a few years now, Rani Mukerji has finally found acceptance from his illustrious film family.

And, the first public, initiation into the Chopra family comes with the responsibility of finalizing the guest list for the grand premiere of ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ that will be hosted at the Yash Raj studios tonight.

Barring the public acknowledgement, the event also attains prominence as it honours the late Yash Chopra and his movies, and is touted to be the biggest premiere ever in Bollywood history.

According to a tweet from movie expert Taran Adarsh, “Yash Raj spokesperson informs me that the premiere of #JTHJ will be held in just ONE floor of YRF Studios: Floor No 1.”

Since the event also marks a tribute to Yash Chopra, it will host a segment that includes all actresses who have worked with the erstwhile filmmaker.

“A special state-of-the-art theatre will be created, and will stretch the entire length of the floor. Currently, work is on to create the theatre which will be dismantled after the event,” reported the Indian media.

“Never has such a grand event been planned in the studio so the entire family is quite eager to make this a special evening.”

An official tweet from the Indian movie channel Zoom confirms; “Rani reportedly is deciding the guest list for the premiere of ‘JTHJ’”.

“She (Rani) is making the invitee list. She will take a call on who is to be invited from within the industry and outside for the premiere,” reports Hindustan Times.

Even at Yash Chopra’s funeral, Rani was seen spearheading the procession as if to proclaim her place in the Chopra household.

The ‘JTHJ’ actress Anushka Sharma had also hinted about Rani’s new family when she revealed that she had met Yash Chopra for the last time at Rani Mukerji’s house.

With, Rani gearing up to publicly exercise her new role in the Chopra family, industry insiders are speculating whether she’d misuse this newfound power to get even with her rivals, or play dutiful daughter-in-law-to-be and let bygones be bygones.

But, here are three actresses who we think Rani would give the royal snub.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

Their rivalry is legendary, with one-time best buds turning enemies over a movie role and a lover. While Rani had allegedly irked her then-best-friend by taking on ‘Chalte Chalte’, Ash apparently hit back by snatching away her then-boyfriend Abhishek Bachchan.

Whatever the reasons, the two haven’t patched up yet.

Even at Amitabh Bachchan’s recent birthday bash, Rani was invited but ignored. With Zoom capturing Abhishek ignoring Rani even though she had walked into him.

Now, Rani is sure to get back for the humiliation by striking out Ash from the big party.

While Aishwarya has not been directed by Yash Chopra, she had featured in his signature chiffon saree act in his son Aditya’s romantic drama ‘Mohabbatein’.

Kajol

Even though they are cousins, the two have never really hit it off.

Kajol has always distanced herself from grouping with Rani, and it was filmmaker Karan Johar who benefitted from bringing them together on the big screen with ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ and the small screen with his talkshow ‘Koffee with Karan’.

And, now that Kajol’s husband Ajay Devgn is at loggerheads with the Yash Raj movie production over his movie ‘Son of Sardar’ over movie-screen monopoly, Rani might not include her in the list at all.

In fact, the cousin rivalry aside, some industry insiders have claimed that Kajol, despite being a Yash Chopra heroine, will head to the premiere of ‘Son of Sardar’, which will be held on the same night as well.

Kajol, just like Ash, has never been directed by Yash Chopra, but Adi in the hugely popular ‘Diwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’.

Preity Zinta

Rani and Preity have always been pitched against one another, by the media and movie producers.

And, this despite the two doing a handful of movies together. From ‘Har Dil Jo Pyaar Karega’ to  ‘Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna’, to ‘Veer Zaara’, the two B’town beauties might have reunited on-screen but they’ve never shared a good rapport off-screen.

Considering she has worked with Yash Chopra in the epic love story ‘Veer Zaara’, it would be interesting to see if Rani could eventually overlook their movie rivalry.

‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ review: This one will be remembered… jab tak hai jaan!

That man taught a country of a billion the art of loving. Those subtle, nuanced, romantic sweet nothings that were engendered from the brain of that man, have always had a way with people – no matter how much they would want themselves to be impervious to that emotion called love. Yash Chopra, you made sure that you will live on and that your last film will be remembered - jab tak hai jaan!

The King of Romance behind the camera directing the Badshah of Romance in front of the camera. And a script that boasts of solid, undying love. No, there cannot be a better way to portray love on the silver screen. ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ has nailed that – at least for the immediate future. Shah Rukh Khan, you don’t really need words of praise or adulation; but go ahead and take a bow! With Samar Anand, the actor has brought another Raj Malhotra alive on screen. And a newer, better, improved version at that. One who doesn’t know how not to love; one who instills in every heart the hope to be able to love – love unconditionally, love that doesn’t know its limitations. Sounds like I’m just out of a Yash Chopra movie? Yes, this had to be the one.

Major Samar Anand, stationed with the Bomb Defusing Squad of the Indian Army is a man who flirts with death at every step of his life. He has successfully cut short the lives of ninety-seven bombs and is on his ninety-eighth one when the film begins. Wolf-whistle from all corners of the theatre greets the stubbled, sunglasses-clad man in uniform; oh yes, and a lot of claps too.

Akira Rai (Anushka Sharma) is a twenty-one year old intern; a state-level swimmer, national-level tennis player etc. (pardon me if the order is wrong – this girl has a long list of accolades behind her name!), and is dying to get placed with the Discovery Channel. The girl dives headlong into the freezing cold waters of a crystal-blue lake with Major Anand sitting on the banks. She passes out in the water and a nonchalant Samar saves her, makes her wear his jacket and rides off on his Royal Enfield. Once in the room, off falls Samar Anand’s diary from one of the pockets of his jacket; on to Akira’s hands and the girl is transported back in time into the life of a twenty-five year old Samar.

Samar there, loves Meera (Katrina Kaif). A girl who detests ‘brown, boring’ Indians and dreams that someday she’ll be married off to some gora. Fate, however, has other plans for her; and by a complicated turn of events that involves Meera learning music from Samar, both fall in love with each other. Hitch: Meera’s already had her “arrangement” – engagement, in Samar’s words. A series of promises to Jesus; some broken ones, some unbroken ones included; Samar goes off to the Indian Army. A tale of love; and love in its purest, most unadulterated form, ensues.

Speaking about Shah Rukh’s performance is nothing short of belittling the consummate actor’s skills. If as Raj Malhotra he had managed to woo half the population of the country; as Samar Anand, this man can make many more smitten by him. The slight stutter, the little hint of a tear in the eyes, the arms-outstretched pose – Khan knows how to make his ladies fall for him – be it that they are almost half his age! Katrina Kaif as the NRI Meera does a pretty good job of playing the girl who is torn between loves and promises; and her accented Hindi passes off as acceptable. Anushka Sharma acts well; however, she does dwindle to the extra-carefree attitude that she has been able to put her signature on in the last few films. But Shah Rukh, yes. He is, indeed, the man to watch out for.

Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh in an extended cameo make for a pleasant watch; and the scene where Neetu Singh meets Katrina is exceptionally moving. Anupam Kher as Meera’s dad doesn’t really have a lot to do.

Cut to direction. Only somebody like Yash Chopra could have made those mesmerising locales of Pehalgam and Ladakh come alive on celluloid. London, on the other hand, is beautiful – be it in winter, rain or summer. The film doesn’t really have the sarees flying slo-mo in the air, but what it has is sheer, pristine beauty. However, the film appears a tad too long; at almost three hours, the ‘impatient, newer generation’ might have to stretch themselves a bit.

AR Rahman’s music in the film somewhere seems underused. The songs ‘Challa’, ‘Ishq Shava’ and ‘Saans Mein’ are a delight to the ears. The Master Musician’s ‘Heer’ is a beautiful song. The numbers are hummable, and nice ones; but just that. They aren’t exactly exceptional. We’ve had better specimens from Rahman in the past, and will sure have better ones in the future.

In case you still haven’t, go watch ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’. You can thank the Kings of Romance once you’re done with the film… nahi bhoolenge hum, jab tak hai jaan!

Ratings: Four cheers for this one!

Anupama Chopra's review: Jab Tak Hai Jaan

Jab Tak Hai Jaan
Direction: Yash Chopra
Actors: Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif, Anushka Sharma
Rating: ***

In what world would a beautiful, fabulously rich girl who cruises around London in a chauffer-driven Bentley fall in love with a waiter? In Yash Chopra's world, of course!
It helps enormously that the waiter is played by Shah Rukh Khan with charm turned on high-beam. In any case, you don't go to a Yash Chopra movie to delve into realism or the messiness of relationships. You go to partake in a fantasy of swooning, idealised love - and Jab Tak Hai Jaan delivers plenty of that.

This film has all the elements you would want in a Yash Chopra film - gorgeously shot locations in the UK and Kashmir, lavish songs and three inherently noble lead characters who struggle gallantly against their individual obligations.

But what Jab Tak Hai Jaan does not have is a coherent plot. Through a series of unconvincing story twists, the waiter becomes a major in the army - a bomb-disposal expert, no less.

We first meet Samar Anand as he is about to defuse his 98th bomb. He does this without any protection and has therefore been dubbed the man who cannot die.

Another girl, a feisty filmmaker named Akira (played by Anushka Sharma), comes into his life, but another series of clumsy plot twists then takes him back to London, where his first love (played by Katrina Kaif), waits.

The story by Aditya Chopra is grossly over-written and borderline ridiculous. At one point, when Akira is looking for the major, she is told, 'Sir goes for quiet time after defusing a bomb.' The major is sitting by the river, singing loudly.

The Hurt Locker this certainly isn't. And yet, despite the wobbly narrative, Jab Tak Hai Jaan works as an ode to epic romance. I didn't buy into the story, but I bought into the heartfelt performances.

All three - Shah Rukh, Katrina and Anushka - are top-notch. And ladies, take note: Shah Rukh is easily Hindi cinema's most dashing army officer since Balraj Sahni in Haqeeqat, and with this film, he finally breaks his no-kissing rule.

You also have to admire his ability to play the romantic hero. We've seen him do it for two decades but he still makes it compelling.

Jab Tak Hai Jaan is too tangled to transport you. At almost 180 minutes, it also requires enormous patience. But I recommend that you see it. Because only Yash Chopra could make heartache so attractive and ennobling that his characters wear it like a badge of honor.
