MAS to fly to Kota Kinabalu, Kuching from Penang starting Nov 18

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 12 ― Malaysia Airlines will be offering flights from Penang to Kota Kinabalu and Kuching from November 18, 2016. The national carrier, in a statement today, said the route would be operated on a seasonal basis to coincide with the peak holiday period until December 2016. The service resumes again during the Chinese New Year period.

Both Penang-Kuching and Penang-Kota Kinabalu services will be operated four times weekly, it said.

To commemorate the service, Malaysia Airlines will be running a seven-day sale, offering guests travelling from Penang to Kota Kinabalu with fare from as low as RM169 and to Kuching from as low as RM129, one way all-inclusive on Economy Class. The fare includes complimentary 30kg check-in baggage, meals and free of credit card charges.

The sale starts tomorrow until October 19 for travel from November 18 to December 31, 2016.

“We believe this will open up greater domestic tourism for Sabah, Sarawak and Penang. This sector also complements Firefly’s schedule and benefits those looking for onward connections to Malaysia’s largest secondary cities,” Malaysia Airlines Bhd Chief Executive Officer Peter Bellew said. ― Bernama

Sabah’s Borneo Ant House opens on July 1

KOTA KINABALU: The Borneo Ant House, Malaysia’s first underground gallery, near Tuaran and some 35km from here, opens its doors to visitors on July 1.

Owned and managed by a local family from Sabah, it offers visitors a chance to learn more about ants, as well as Sabah and Sarawak’s ethnic groups.

Borneo Ant House chief executive officer Sufiah Abd Rahim Lee, 59, said the name “Ant House” is taken from the concept of “living underground”, like an ant.

“Ants live underground and since the theme park’s main attractions are the underground galleries, we decided to name this place as such,” said the retired teacher and mother of five.

The main attractions would be the three galleries – the first would be on sculptures of ants and some description of the insect, said Sufiah.

The second would be on the cultures of the Bajau, Dusun Lotud, Iban and Bidayuh people, and the last, on swords.

“The Bajau and Dusun Lotuds make up the majority of the population in Tuaran and the Iban and Bidayuh people are the largest ethnic groups of Sarawak,” she said.

“This is why we chose to focus on these four ethnic groups,” Sufiah said.

She added that the gallery on swords among other weapons were relevant as decades ago, the people of Borneo (Sabah and Sarawak) were known as headhunters.

“So we think this topic would be interesting for visitors to learn more about it,” she said.

Sufiah also hoped that the underground gallery concept would appeal to the public, as it would be the first of its kind in Sabah.

There is a canopy walkway for those wanting to spend time relaxing with nature.

The entrance fee for Malaysian adults is RM18 per person and RM9 for the disabled, senior citizens aged 60 and above, as well as children aged seven and below.

Non-Malaysian visitors need to fork out double the price of each category.

Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun will launch the Borneo Ant House on Thursday.

Malaysians exempted from tourism tax, foreigners pay RM10

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians will be fully exempted from paying the Tourism Tax which is expected to be implemented on Aug 1, said Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz.

This follows earlier plans to exempt locals from paying the tax at only three-star and lower hotels.

Nazri said that foreign tourists will, however, be charged a flat rate of RM10 per night and per room for all types of hotels and accommodation.

“We will impose a RM10 flat rate from five-star to zero-star hotels for foreign tourists, and Malaysians will be exempted from the tax across all classifications of hotels,” he said in Parliament on Wednesday.

He was responding to a question from Anthony Loke (DAP – Seremban) on plans to standardise the tourism tax rate and whether locals would be exempted from paying it.

Nazri said that there was nothing left to discuss on the matter, adding that it was now up to the Prime Minister to decide when the tax would be officially implemented.

Hotel guests were originally expected to be charged between RM2.50 and RM20 for overnight stays depending on the hotel classification.

Collection of the tax will be handled by the Customs Department.

PAKEJ PERCUTIAN SABAH : KOTA KINABALU, KUNDASANG TRIP 2017/2018

Capsule Hotel now operating in KKIA

KOTA KINABALU: A capsule hotel is now operating at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport with the opening of the Napzone Capsule Hotel.

The Gintell-developed hotel opened its doors to the public on Nov 1 and has garnered much attention since then.

Its first few customers accidentally walked into this hotel while waiting for the next flight out, and started sharing about it in now-viral posts on social media.

Gintell Rest & Go regional operations manager for Sabah and Sarawak, Gan Jenn Yih said the capsule hotel can accommodate 40 guests, adding that the hotel was set up to help make travellers’ flying experience more comfortable.

“Kota Kinabalu has one of the busiest airports in the country, and there have been requests from travellers as well as the airport management for such services here,” he said.

“This is why Gintell decided to introduce this type of hotel here,” he added.

Gan said the Napzone capsule hotel is open 24 hours a day, and added that it is divided into male and female sections.

There are toilets and bathrooms, coffee and drink machines as well as a charging port in each capsule for customers.

“There are also oxygen pumps for customers, all free of charge if they book with our capsule hotel,” he said, adding that the rooms are mostly fully occupied every day.

Gan said they are still installing several other facilities for customers at Napzone, and will have a grand opening after everything is fitted in.
