Teach your children to obey the rules

I REFER to the report “Dad: Teacher cut my son’s hair without permission” (The Star, Jan 6)
Parents must also do their part to help their children to follow school rules.
Children need to understand that there are always consequences for breaking rules. Respect for rules is not just for school but everyday life.
In some schools, students are being allowed to run wild with a “total disregard of school rules” because of a lack of proper discipline in the home.
The biggest problems cited by teachers include children failing to pay attention, showing disrespect, using mobile phones in class and hurling verbal abuse at adults.
These students are not afraid to challenge authority.
Such behaviour is often the result of the parents themselves showing a lack of respect towards the staff of the school. There are parents who do not even teach basic social skills to their children.
In Britain, parents could soon face a fine and prison if their children misbehave at school. The British government wants to introduce tough new laws to improve discipline in schools. They want to make parents more responsible for their sons and daughters. Every parent has a responsibility to back our teachers and make sure the rules are followed.
Your child’s education is ultimately your responsibility as a parent. You are your child’s first teacher. Great teaching cannot happen without some great parenting and productive parent-teacher interaction.
