Bunuh teman wanita: Pelajar dihukum 18 tahun penjara.

A former engineering student who smothered his girlfriend with a pillow and set her body on fire was sentenced to 18 years in jail after he pleaded guilty to the crime.

Muhammad Khairi Nor Aziz, 21, caused the death of Nurul Awatif Mohd Shakir, then 19, at an apartment in Jalan Ukay Perdana 2, Taman Ukay Perdana in Ampang between 9pm on Sept 4, 2011 and 2.15am the next day. High Court judge Justice Ahmadi Asnawi said although Khairi was a young offender with no prior records and showed good behaviour in jail, this did not excuse what he had done.

"The prison official wrote you a glowing report but what you did was serious. You had no rationality at all.
"You desired the deceased and when she rejected you, you suffocated her with a pillow until she couldn't breathe.
"Your action of burning her body was only meant to hide your mistake," said the judge before sentencing yesterday.

Earlier, counsel Aminuddin Mohd Ramli asked the court for leniency as his client was only 19 at the time of the incident and panicked when he discovered the girl had died.

"He placed his finger under her nose to check her breathing. He did not intend to kill her.
"He is remorseful and wishes for a second chance to start a new life.
"He is currently in his second semester of a management diploma at the prison with a CGPA of 2.9," he said.

DPP Mohd Azari Harun said the victim suffered burns on 72 per cent of her body and asked the court to consider the public interest on the case over the accused's.
The prosecution also called the victim's parents Mohd Shakir Arshad, 50, and Azizah Abd Rahman, 48, to give their Victim Impact Statement.
Azizah, who appeared numb as she read out her statement, recalled how she went to the hospital to identify the body of her only daughter.

"She was a friendly person and the closest to me. We have suffered a great loss," said Azizah.

The court heard how the accused resorted to smothering the victim with the pillow to silence her after she rejected his advances for sex. He took the body out in a car to Jalan Lembah Jaya Utara where he poured petrol and lit her on fire. The accused was arrested at his university campus in Perak by the police on Sept 12, 2011.

A post-mortem report stated the deceased's cause of death as "unascertained" due to the body being badly burned
