Male-friendly and convenient

There is a dire need for clinics that specifically address men’s health issues, writes Nadia Badarudin
MEN are supposed to be tough. A man is expected to brush off any minor discomfort and illness, or remain in denial (rather than acknowledging what he has) because society may expect that of him.
This is cultural stereotyping which men have been living up to. Such social perceptions are corroborated by studies which show that men are often reluctant to seek medical care or take preventive measures, compared with women, who are more proactive. They will visit the doctor only when a disorder is at an advanced stage.
To make matters worse, the current healthcare system is seemingly biased against them. Look around. While there are clinics for women and children, there are few, if any, dedicated to men’s health.
SCARY FACTS
According to the Department Of Statistics Malaysia, the five principal causes of death among men in 2008 were ischaemic heart disease (14.4 per cent), transport accident (7.9 per cent), pneumonia (6.6 per cent), cerebrovascular disease (5.8 per cent) and septicaemia (5.6 per cent).
The Malaysian National Health and Morbidity Survey 2011 pointed out that many chronic disorders and health risk factors are prevalent among men.
It was reported that a high number of deaths are caused by diabetes (15.8 per cent) hypertension (33.7 per cent), hypercholesterolemia (30.1 per cent), obesity (24.9 per cent) and smoking (43.9 per cent).
Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre senior consultant urologist Professor Dr Zulkifli Md Zainuddin says the majority of deaths are preventable and reversible.
He says men’s healthcare options are limited to government or private hospitals.
“The lack of special, male-friendly facilities are among the factors that keep men from seeking help for health problems.
“Male patients are reluctant to visit the doctor unless it’s a chronic condition. And in most cases, they turn up to see the doctor only for sex-related issues,” he says.
CLINICS FOR MEN
Dr Zulkifli says having more male-only health clinics is important in view of rising cases of chronic illnesses and to encourage men to care for their well-being throughout their life, and also, to strengthen their roles in family and society.
Ideally, he adds, the clinic should be a one-stop centre that promotes health awareness among men and provides sound medical information.
Unlike in the US or South Korea, the concept of a men’s health clinic is still new here, even among practitioners. Dr Zulkifli says that based on his experience, men’s refusal to visit the doctor is not so much related to ego, but rather to a lack of information on specialised care for their problems.
“Most are clueless and do not know who they should talk to. Being referred to many specialists in different places can be frustrating too, especially when they are experiencing sex-related problems.
“The best men’s health clinics should have a network of experts including physicians, urologists, cardiologists, psychologists (all under one roof), and offer an individualised healthcare programme.
“For instance, a patient diagnosed with erectile dysfunction (ED) will be immediately referred to a cardiologist from the same centre as ED may be a sign of heart disease.
“The clinic should also keep a complete database which can track a patient’s health condition throughout his life,” he says, adding that such clinics may also prevent the men from being ripped-off for unnecessary medical health screenings, or turning to quick but medically unproven remedies from the streets or the Internet.
MALE-FRIENDLY FACILITY
Dr Zulkifli’s team has started a health clinic for men at UKM Medical Centre, in Bandar Tun Razak, Cheras, Selangor. It is run by three specialists, three medical officers and a handful of male support staff.
He says: “Having male support staff as well as one-to-one consultation in a private room are among the things we do to create a conducive and male-friendly environment.
A patient is not required to submit a referral letter, and all he has to do is call to set an appointment. The clinic, which opens every Tuesday from 2.30pm, has been well-received.
“We have had patients as young as 25. Most are diagnosed with ED or Testosterone Deficiency Syndrome (TDS), while the rest experience premature ejaculation,” he says.
Although the cases are mainly related to men’s sexual health, the input is imperative as some of the illnesses are closely associated with other diseases.
He explains: “For instance, TDS is linked to fatalities from diabetes, hypertension and metabolic syndrome.” Dr Zulkifli hopes more such clinics will be set up soon.
“Perhaps by having more such facilities, men will be more proactive about their health.”

Even simpler, mintak saja doktor lelaki untuk kes dibahagian sulit.
Adakah kos operasi akan menjadi berganda jika semua klinik dan semua bahagian tertentu di hospital dijalankan dengan pengasingan jantina?

Aku pun malu jugak ngan doktor pompuan
Dua perkara berbeza
