Malaysian Official Says Missing Plane Hijacked

A Malaysian investigation into the missing flight 370 has concluded that one or more people with flying experience switched off communications devices and deliberately steered the airliner off-course, a Malaysian government official involved in the investigation said Saturday.

The official called the disappearance a hijacking, though he said no motive has been established and no demands have been made known. It's not yet clear where the plane ended up, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief the media.

The official said a deliberate takeover of the plane was no longer a theory. "It is conclusive," he said, indicating that investigators were ruling out mechanical failure or pilot error in the disappearance.

He said evidence that led to the conclusion were signs that the plane's communications were switched off deliberately, data about the flight path and indications the plane was steered in a way to avoid detection by radar.

The Boeing 777's communication with the ground was severed just under one hour into a Malaysia Airlines flight March 8 from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. Malaysian officials previously have said radar data suggest it may have turned back toward and crossed over the Malaysian peninsula after setting out on a northeastern path toward the Chinese capital.

Earlier, an American official told The Associated Press that investigators are examining the possibility of "human intervention" in the plane's disappearance, adding it may have been "an act of piracy."

While other theories are still being examined, the U.S. official said key evidence suggesting human intervention is that contact with the Boeing 777's transponder stopped about a dozen minutes before a messaging system on the jet quit. Such a gap would be unlikely in the case of an in-flight catastrophe.

The Malaysian official said only a skilled aviator could navigate the plane the way it was flown after its last confirmed location over the South China Sea. The official said it had been established with a "more than 50 percent" degree of certainty that military radar had picked up the missing plane after it dropped off civilian radar.

Why anyone would want to do this is unclear. Malaysian authorities and others will be urgently investigating the backgrounds of the two pilots and 10 crew members, as well the 227 passengers on board.

Some experts have said that pilot suicide may be the most likely explanation for the disappearance, as was suspected in a SilkAir crash during a flight from Singapore to Jakarta in 1997 and an EgyptAir flight in 1999.

A massive international search effort began initially in the South China Sea where the plane's transponders stopped transmitting. It has since been expanded onto the other side of the Malay peninsula up into the Andaman Sea and into the Indian Ocean.

Scores of aircraft and ships from 12 countries are involved in the search.

The plane had enough fuel to fly for at least five hours after its last known location, meaning a vast swath of South and Southeast Asia would be within its reach. Investigators are analyzing radar and satellite data from around the region to try and pinpoint its final location, something that will be vital to hopes of finding the plane, and answering the mystery of what happened to it.

The USS Kidd arrived in the Strait of Malacca late Friday afternoon and will be searching in the Andaman Sea, and into the Bay of Bengal. It uses a using a "creeping-line" search method of following a pattern of equally spaced parallel lines in an effort to completely cover the area.

A P-8A Poseidon, the most advanced long range anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare aircraft in the world, will arrive Saturday and be sweeping the southern portion of the Bay of Bengal and the northern portion of the Indian Ocean. It has a nine-member crew and has advanced surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities, the department of defense said in a statement.

Another U.S. official, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, said investigators looking for the plane have run out of clues except for a type of satellite data that has never been used before to find a missing plane, and is very inexact.

The data consists of attempts by an Inmarsat satellite to identify a broad area where the plane might be in case a messaging system aboard the plane should need to connect with the satellite, said the official. The official compared the location attempts, called a "handshake," to someone driving around with their cellphone not in use. As the phone from passes from the range of one cellphone tower to another, the towers note that the phone is in range in case messages need to be sent.

In the case of the Malaysian plane, there were successful attempts by the satellite to roughly locate the Boeing 777 about once an hour over four to five hours, the official said. "This is all brand new to us," the official said. "We've never had to use satellite handshaking as the best possible source of information."

The handshake does not transmit any data on the plane's altitude, airspeed or other information that might help in locating it, the official said. Instead, searchers are trying to use the handshakes to triangulate the general area of where the plane last was known to have been at the last satellite check, the official said.

"It is telling us the airplane was continuing to operate," the official said, plus enough information on location so that the satellite will know how many degrees to turn to adjust its antenna to pick up any messages from the plane.

The official confirmed prior reports that following the loss of contact with the plane's transponder, the plane turned west. A transponder emits signals that are picked up by radar providing a unique identifier for each plane along with altitude. Malaysian military radar continued to pick up the plane as a whole "paintskin" -- a radar blip that has no unique identifier -- until it traveled beyond the reach of radar, which is about 320 kilometers (200 miles) offshore, the official said.

The New York Times, quoting American officials and others familiar with the investigation, said radar signals recorded by the Malaysian military appear to show the airliner climbing to 45,000 feet (about 13,700 meters), higher than a Boeing 777's approved limit, soon after it disappeared from civilian radar, and making a sharp turn to the west. The radar track then shows the plane descending unevenly to an altitude of 23,000 feet (7,000 meters), below normal cruising levels, before rising again and flying northwest over the Strait of Malacca toward the Indian Ocean, the Times reported.

Lowy reported from Washington. Associated Press writers Ashok Sharma in New Delhi, Jim Gomez in Kuala Lumpur, and Rod McGuirk in Canberra, Australia, contributed to this report.

US deploys P-8A Poseidon to search missing Malaysian jet
PTI | March 15, 2014, 09.03 am IST

Washington: The US has deployed state-of-the-art P-8A Poseidon aircraft to search for the missing Malaysia Airlines plane in the Bay of Bengal that disappeared mysteriously last week, the Pentagon said.

"The P-8 will be searching the Bay of Bengal. The P-8A Poseidon is a long-range maritime patrol capability. The P-8A will provide more capability while focusing on worldwide responsiveness and interoperability. The nine-person crew will operate state-of-the-art sensors," Pentagon spokesperson, Army Col Steven Warren, said yesterday.

The Pentagon is coordinating the rescue effort with the Indian Navy, which is engaged in the search operation at the request of the Malaysian authorities.

The P-8A arrived at Kadena Air Base, Japan, in December as part of the Defense Department's rebalance to the Asia-Pacific region, he said.

Warren said while USS Kidd, a guided missile destroyer will be searching in the Andaman Sea, and into the Bay of Bengal, the P-8A Poseidon will search a much larger search area -- the southern portion of the Bay of Bengal and the northern portion of the Indian Ocean, he added.

"We're very excited about the P-8A, because it's got tremendously increased capabilities," Warren said. The White House said, the Malaysian Government is in lead of the investigation. So what I can tell you is the Malaysian government is in the lead in this investigation, and US air safety officials are in Kuala Lumpur working closely with the Malaysians on the investigation.

"This is a difficult and unusual situation, and we are working hard, in close collaboration with the Malaysian government, to investigate a number of possible scenarios for what happened to the flight," White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said.

"The US government is tracking the situation closely, and we are in communication across agencies and with international partners to provide any appropriate assistance we can in this investigation.

"We are also continuing to participate actively in the search efforts. We are consulting with our international partners about the appropriate assets to deploy, including to the new search areas to the West," he said.

The US is participating with an array of international partners, in assisting the Malaysian government in their effort to trace the MH370 aircraft that went missing last week with 239 people on board.

What could have happened to missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370? More theories about the missing airliner take shape.

Kod tango bermaksud rampasan pesawat
WARTAWAN SINAR HARIAN

13 Mac 2014

Missing MH370: Seismic activity detected after plane went off radar
BY THO XIN YI

BEIJING: A research team from China's University of Science and Technology detected tremors in the sea near the Malaysia Vietnam border on March 8 hours after MH370 disappeared from the radar screen.

In a report published on its website, the Wen Lianxing Research Team said it suspected the tremor to relate to the missing MAS plane because the area "is not within seismic zone."

"The incident happened at 2.55am on March 8, about one-and-a-half hours after MH370 lost contact at 1.30am.

"One of the two possible locations is (an area) about 116km to the northeast of MH370's last confirmed location," it said.

The research team said it detected the tremor with two seismographs located within the borders of Malaysia and identified the location with the signals.

"Many countries have deployed aircrafts, vessels and satellites to locate the missing flight to no avail.

"If this tremor was indeed caused by the plane crashing into the sea, the intensity of the seismicity indicated that the crashing process was disastrous," the report said.

The Wen Lianxing Research Team is part of the university's School of Earth and Space Sciences. Four researchers were involved in this  project.

When contacted by The Star, Meteorological Department deputy director-general (strategy and technical) Dr Mohd Rosaidi Che Abas confirmed that seismographs at the department's stations in Kulim and Ipoh detected "shaking" at 2.56am on that day.

He said further investigations are underway.

Flight MH370 on a Boeing777-200ER was carrying 239 passengers and crew enroute to Beijing.

Malaysia Flight MH370: Hijack Theory Dismissed, Foreign Reports Sensationalised, Says Malaysia
By Athena Yenko | March 14, 2014 2:14 PM EST

In Malaysia, officials are dismissing foreign media reports about the missing Malaysia airlines MH370 one after the other, saying such reports are unverified, worse, sensationalised.

One such report was the hijack theory reported by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ).

In the WSJ's report, US investigators, counter-terrorism experts, were claiming possibility of hijacking - the plane and passengers were being held against their will. The report said that the ones responsible for the hijacking turned the plane's transponder off to evade all detection through radar.

"Such unverified reports and rumours will disrupt our search and rescue operation," he told a press conference yesterday. Irresponsible acts such as these will affect the families (of MH370's passengers and crew) as well," Acting Transport Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said.

Mr Hisham also ruled out the report that a Chinese satellite was able to photograph debris near the missing MH370 vanished. He said that this still needs to be confirmed. Hence, a Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency was deployed to investigate the debris.

"But we found nothing at the site. The Chinese Embassy later notified us that the images were released by mistake and that the debris was not from MH370," Mr Hisham explained.

Mr Hisham told press that Huang Huikang, the Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia, sent him a note apologising for the mistake.

Meanwhile, MAS (Malaysia Airlines) chief executive officer Ahmad Jauhari Yahya also dismissed reports that the missing MH370 was flying for hours before vanishing from radar. Speaking in a press conference, he explained that the MH370 did not continue sending signals to the ground after it lost contact with air traffic control.

Mr Jauhari Yahya said that engine manufacturer, Roll Royce, and Boeing told MAS that the report was inaccurate. The last transmission from MH370's Aircraft Communication Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS) was at 1.07am (on Saturday).

"Both manufacturers, who are here in Malaysia, said they did not receive such data after the final one that was transmitted by the engines (monitoring system) at 1.07am. That transmission indicated that everything was normal," Mr Ahmad Jauhari explained.

Mr Ahmad Jauhari made it clear that MH370's ACARS could be programmed to transmit data at pre-determined intervals.

"This can be during a take-off, after reaching the top of a climb or every 30 minutes. It can also transmit data in the event of any abnormality in the engines or airframe," he said.

The press asked Mr Ahmad Jauhari if ACARS, the digital link for the plane to send messages to ground personnel about aircraft status, could be manually switched off.

"Anything is possible in an aircraft system. You can have total electrical failure and (if this happens) it won't transmit anything," he said.

On the other hand, Mr Ahmad Jauhari confirmed that there were already 43 ships and 40 aircrafts conducting search for the missing plane - with 26 ships and 25 aircraft in the South China Sea and the rest in the Straits of Malacca.

Even with Malaysia dismissing reports from foreign media, he said the country was thankful for all the aid coming in from other countries.

"With every passing day, the task becomes more difficult. As always, our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those on the flight."

MISSING MH370: No debris found

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia: No signs of the missing Malaysian jetliner have been found at a spot where Chinese satellite images showed what might be plane debris, Malaysia’s civil aviation chief said Thursday, deflating the latest lead in the five-day hunt.

“There is nothing. We went there, there is nothing,” Director-General of the Civil Aviation (DCA) Datuk Azharuddin Abdul Rahman told reporters in Kuala Lumpur.

Vietnamese officials previously said the area had been “searched thoroughly” in recent days.

The hunt for the Boeing 777 has been punctuated by false leads since it disappeared with 239 people aboard just hours after leaving Kuala Lumpur for Beijing early Saturday.

The plane was heading northeast over the South China Sea when it disappeared, but authorities believe it may have turned back and headed into the upper reaches of the Strait of Malacca or beyond.

The location where Chinese images showed possible debris is not far from where the last confirmed position of the plane was between Malaysia and Vietnam.
The images and coordinates were posted on the website of China’s State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defence.

A Xinhua report said the images from around 11 a.m. on Sunday appear to show “three suspected floating objects” of varying sizes in a 20-kilometer radius, the largest about 24-by-22 meters (79-by-72 feet) off the southern tip of Vietnam.

Pham Quy Tieu, deputy transport minister, told The Associated Press that the area had been “searched thoroughly” by forces from other countries over the past few days.

Doan Huu Gia, chief of air search and rescue coordination centre, said Malaysian and Singaporean aircraft were scheduled to visit the area again.

Li Jiaxiang, chief of the Civil Aviation Administration of China, said later China had yet to confirm any link between the suspected floating objects and the plane.
Malaysia has come under some criticism for its handling of the search, which currently covers 35,800 square miles (92,600 square kilometres) and involves 12 nations. --AP

V12 MH370 - Berkemungkinan kena hijack?!

14 March 2014| last updated at 02:31PM
MISSING MH370: New US lead thrusts Malaysia jet search into Indian Ocean

KUALA LUMPUR: The needle-in-a-haystack hunt for a missing Malaysian airliner spread to the vast Indian Ocean Friday after the White House cited “new information” that it might have flown for hours after vanishing nearly seven days ago.

Multiple US media reports, citing American officials, said the Malaysia  Airlines Boeing 777’s communication system continued to “ping” a satellite for  a number of hours after it disappeared off radar with 239 people aboard, en  route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

“It’s my understanding that based on some new information that’s not  necessarily conclusive, but new information, an additional search area may be  opened in the Indian Ocean,” White House spokesman Jay Carney said.

“The USS Kidd is transiting the Strait of Malacca en route to the Indian  Ocean,” a US Navy official told AFP, referring to a guided-missile destroyer  initially deployed to the Gulf of Thailand on the other side of Malaysia’s  coast.

It was the latest in a series of tantalising leads that have pulled the  search for flight MH370 in multiple directions and deepened what is fast  becoming one of the biggest mysteries in modern aviation history.

“I can’t think of any other incident like this where there is so little  clue as to what actually happened,” said Ravikumar Madavaram, an aerospace  consultant at Frost & Sullivan Asia Pacific.

The new thrust opens an additional search front of daunting magnitude. The  Indian Ocean is the world’s third largest with an average depth of nearly 3,900  meters (12,800 feet).

It is like going “from a chessboard to a football field”, Commander William  Marks of the US 7th Fleet told CNN.

Marks insisted the search remained coordinated with the Malaysian  authorities and that the US Navy was “not out here freelancing”.    Malaysia has yet to react publicly to the latest US information, but a  spokesman for the search response effort said the government was aware of the  media reports and White House comments.

Malaysia Airlines said in a statement that it had “nothing further to add.”

The lack of results so far has created a volatile mix of grief, anger,  frustration and speculation that the Malaysian authorities have struggled to  control.

The government has stressed the “unprecedented” nature of the challenge,  with the search parameters expanding daily and the focus swinging wildly from  the east to the west of the Malaysian peninsula.

The Boeing 777 that vanished early Saturday over the South China Sea with  no indication of distress has one of the best safety records of any jet. The  airline also has a solid record.

The explanation void has been filled with a host of theories that include a  mid-air explosion, terrorist act, catastrophic technical failure or rogue  missile strike.

“There are so many stories swirling around. This morning one man told me  the plane had landed in Africa,” said Subramaniam Gurusamy, a 60-year-old  Malaysian security guard whose son was on the flight.

“How am I going to explain to my grandchildren that nobody knows where  their father is?” he told AFP.

Adding to the anguish of relatives — most of whom are Chinese — has been  the succession of false leads, mixed signals, and miscommunication between the  various countries involved in the hunt.

Malaysia on Thursday denied that Chinese satellite imagery had picked up  wreckage in the South China Sea.

The Wall Street Journal, Washington Post and major US networks have all  cited unidentified officials as saying the plane continued to emit signals via  satellite “pings” for four or five hours.

The last signal was sent from over water, at a normal cruising altitude,  the Journal cited investigators as saying.

Gerry Soejatman, an independent aviation analyst based in Jakarta, was  sceptical that the plane could have flown undetected to the Indian Ocean given  the number of military radars operated in the region by Malaysia, India,  Thailand and Indonesia.

“How could it get past all of that?” said Soejatman. “And if it did, how  many people in the military are going to lose their jobs?"

ABC news said US investigators believe the aircraft’s data reporting system  and its transponder — which reports its position in flight to ground-based  radar — shut down separately.

The 14-minute interval suggests they may have been deliberately disabled or  at any rate did not fail as a result of a catastrophic airframe incident, the  US network said.

Coupled with Malaysian radar data indicating that the plane may have  inexplicably started to turn back, the sequential shutdown could lend credence  to the theory of a cockpit takeover.

But Soejatman said the time lag could have been the result of a fire.

“We have seen cases where there have been cockpit fires, and then the  systems go down one by one,” he said. “It doesn’t necessarily have to be  deliberate.”    The plane lost radar contact at around 1:30 am, less than an hour after  take-off, according to Malaysian officials.

They have confirmed that the last words heard from the cockpit were a  relaxed “Alright, good night” as the plane was due to pass from Malaysian to  Vietnamese air traffic control. The night was clear and the weather was fine. -- AFP
