Hit 80s cartoon Jem and the Holograms to be remade into a live action film ' for a whole new generation '

Nearly thirty years after its inception, Jem and the Holograms is being remade for the big screen.
Justin Bieber's manager Scooter Braun, G.I. Joe : Retaliation director Jon M. Chu and Paranormal Activity producer Jason Blum announced via YouTube yesterday that they're working on a live action adaptation of the hit 80s cartoon.
Don't know who Jem is ? ' Google it or Netflix it, ' says Mr Blum. ' If you have a cool mom, she'll definitely know what it is. '
The show, which ran from 1985 to 1988, revolves around a music company owner Jerrica Benton and her secret rock star alter ego Jem, the front-woman of rock group Jem and the Holograms.
A holographic computer, known as Synergy, which was built by Jerrica's father to be ' the ultimate audio-visual entertainment synthesizer ' enables her to transform into Jem using remote micro-projectors in her famous star-shaped earrings.
Through the use of her earrings, Jem also able to project holograms around her, providing special effects for the performances of her band and also giving her the ability to avoid danger from evil-doers, like rival bands The Misfits and The Stingers
Scripted by Ryan Landels, Jem and the Holograms The Movie hopes to update the story 'for a whole new generation with themes of being true to who you are in a multitasking, hyperlinked social media age,' the producers told The Hollywood Reporter.
For the film, Mr Braun, Mr Chu and Mr Blum have decided to crowd-source crucial elements from casting to costume design.
' It's sort of like Kickstarter, ' Mr Chu says, ' but instead of asking for your money, we're asking for your creativity. '
The trio are asking fans to upload videos and photos to YouTube or Tumblr explaining what they love best about the original Jem with the hashtag #JemTheMovie.
They have also put out an open casting call, asking people of any age and gender who can sing, dance and act to upload a two-minute video showcasing their talents.
' This is the real way we're making our movie,' Mr Chu says. 'This is not a contest; this is actually how we're putting things together. '
More ' assignments ' will be revealed in coming weeks, with producers keeping fans up to date via the film's website JemTheMovie.com.

Main cast members for the live-action take on the classic cartoon series ' Jem and the Holograms ' have been announced and are they are truly, truly, truly outrageous (just like the song!)
Aubrey Peeples will play Jem and The Holograms are Stefanie Scott as Jem's sister Kimber, Aurora Perrineau takes on Shana and Hayley Kiyoko has been cast as Aja. No words yet on who'll play " The Misfits " or if they'll even be a part of the movie.
