Lass from Semporna on threshold of fame

ENRICHING life through singing and songs.
That’s the motto of Norminah Sailun from Semporna and she has worked hard to get where she is today – a recording artiste with Skylaser Enterprise Sdn Bhd or Skyline, a local recording company.
Norminah has always wanted to sing, admitting to making a lot of noise, singing her heart out when she was still young.
“I admired any singers and any songs, so I followed all sorts of songs. I took part in many competitions from a young age – sometimes winning but mostly, I didn’t win,” the 26-year-old confessed.
But she remained unfazed, believing the experience gained could only make her a better singer.
“Apart from practising in our house and the bathroom, I also tried singing at weddings and karaokes. Of course, the process of learning never ends, especially in vocal training,”said this young lady of Bajau Sama descent.
She gets invited to sing at weddings and though it’s for free, she takes it as a stepping stone to something better.
After years as a bathroom, wedding and karaoke singer, she entered a competition called Voice of Soul, organised by Pusakag.
“I made it to the top 10 out of 46. I didn’t win but I benefitted a lot from the exposure,” she said.
Then by a stroke of luck, she met a friend who knew a composer working with Skyline. That was when things started looking up for her.
“I met Daniel, an artiste with the recording company, and he, in turn, introduced me to Sam Kidal, a composer. I was so happy there were, at last, some positive signs of my career taking off,” she recalled.
What followed was a series of rehearsals and recordings.
“It took one year to complete my album and we produced about 1,000 copies for distribution,” she said.
The compact disc (CD) is now available in the market and Norminah believes it is doing quite well, considering the launch was just a couple of weeks ago.
The 10 songs in the album include ballads, pop rock and, of course, the well-known and well-loved dangdut, a genre of Indonesian popular music, partly derived from Malay, Arabic, and Hindustani sounds.
There are two songs in Bajau Sama dialect, three in Bajau Semporna and the rest in Malay. Most are love songs.
Norminah chooses the nickname Qiss as her professional name, saying it’s short and easy to pronounce and also gives her “a touch of glamour.”
“However, a glamorous name will not get me anywhere without hard work and I have worked hard to make this album with my producers and composers,” she said.
“I believe there is still a lot of room for improvement in the entertainment industry in Sabah, especially the promotion of local artistes.
“There should be more shows and stage performances by local artistes. Recording houses and producers can organise concerts for them so that they can gain the necessary stage experience to take their career further afield,” she said, adding that this would also help to promote sales of their albums.
Norminah pointed out that little sketches or storylines could be done on stage and be incorporated into the songs to make them more interesting and livelier – and this was especially true for TV.
She felt there should be a special TV slot for local artistes to display their talents through their songs and acting. In this way, she believed their songs, language and artistic expressions could be shared with Malaysians in the other states.
Moreover, the artistes would also have the opportunity to earn a living through their talents, she added.
“Personally, I do gigs for modelling and sing to support myself and my family. My father is ailing and my mother is a housewife.
“They don’t have a regular income. I don’t have a regular job but the six of us (children) chip in to make ends meet for the family. One of my sisters is a nurse – so she contributes more. Being the eldest, I also try my utmost to help out.”
Despite their situation, her parents are very supportive of her ambition to be a recording artiste as are her other siblings.
This diminutive young lady is very determined to succeed in her pursuit of a singing career.
“Presently, we are shooting the video for my songs and I’m happily busy with it,” she said.
Norminah hopes to come out with a new album soon.
