Sweden to release Malaysian father in child abuse case today



KUALA LUMPUR, July 9 — Sweden will release the Malaysian father convicted of hitting his children from jail today upon completing his three-month sentence, but his wife in the high-profile case that gripped Malaysia’s attention earlier this year will remain in jail.

Azizul Raheem Awalluddin will get to spend Hari Raya with his four children who are now in Malaysia once his documents are approved for his July 15 return, local daily Utusan Malaysia reported today.

Datuk Khairul Anwar Rahmat, the Malaysian Volunteer Lawyers Association president, said that preparations for Azizul’s return to Malaysia has been completed as he is expected to finish serving his three-month jail term.

“Azizul will be released tomorrow and he has to sign a few documents involving the Swedish Embassy before allowed to return to Malaysia,” he was quoted saying yesterday.

On March 28, the Swedish courts sentenced Azizul and his wife Shalwati to a jail sentence of 10 months and 14 months respectively, while also ordering them to pay damages to their children.

But Utusan reported today that the courts later reduced their sentence and ordered the Malaysian couple to serve only one-third of their original jail term.

Shalwati has only served three months out of her six-month jail sentence, Utusan said.

The couple had been charged with beating their four children — aged between seven and 14 years — at their home in Stockholm between September 15, 2010, and December 17, 2013.

In the March 28 ruling, the Solna District Court in Stockholm found Shalwati — a secondary school teacher — guilty of committing gross violation of the integrity of her two older children and of assaulting her two younger sons.

Azizul — a Tourism Malaysia director — was convicted of committing gross violation of the integrity of their eldest son and of assaulting their daughter and second son, but was acquitted of charges involving his youngest son.

The couple’s four children were sent to live with their aunt in Kelantan after the duo were detained by Sweden authorities on December 18 last year for allegedly hitting their children for not praying.

In a separate report by Utusan today, the couple’s eldest child and only daughter said that she misses her parents.

“When (we) meet daddy, I and my younger siblings will gather around him and hug him tight. I will tell daddy that we really miss him,” she said, also adding that will ask her father to allow her to stay longer in Kelantan or at least until she sits for her Form 3 exams in the secondary school here.

She also said that she had written a letter last month to her mother but had kept it as she did not know how to mail it to her.

“In the letter, I said that there are nights where I miss mummy so much until it’s hard to sleep. I also told her of my desire to stay longer in Kelantan,” she was quoted saying.

aku pon terpikir cam tue. jgn dia blik malaysia hbes anak2 dia dibelasah cukuplah. nnti kuar penjara sana, masuk penjara sini.

mungkinkah akan kurang mesra hubungan ngan anak anak? bila nengok muka anak anak teringat kesukaran dia dan isteri lalui masa proses kat mahkamah dan masa dipenjara..

mungkinkah anak anak dia malu nk start komunikasi ngan ayah dorang ngan selepas apa yak berlaku.. hmmm
