MH17 crash: MAS plane crashes in Ukraine
HRABOVE, Ukraine (Reuters): A Malaysia Airlines plane was brought down over eastern Ukraine on Thursday, killing all 295 people aboard and sharply raising the stakes in a conflict between Kiev and pro-Moscow rebels in which Russia and the West back opposing sides.
Ukraine accused "terrorists" - militants fighting to unite eastern Ukraine with Russia - of shooting down the Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 with a heavy, Soviet-era SA-11 ground-to-air missile as it flew from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur.
Leaders of the rebel Donetsk People's Republic denied any involvement, although around the same time their military commander said his forces had downed a much smaller Ukrainian transport plane. It would be their third such kill this week.
The scale of the disaster affecting scores of foreigners could prove a turning point for international pressure to resolve a crisis that has claimed hundreds of lives in Ukraine since pro-Western protests toppled the Moscow-backed president in Kiev in February and Russia annexed Crimea a month later.
Reuters journalists saw burning and charred wreckage bearing the red and blue Malaysia insignia and dozens of bodies strewn in fields near the village of Hrabove, 40 km (25 miles) from the Russian border near the rebel-held regional capital of Donetsk.
Despite the shooting down of several Ukrainian military aircraft in the area in recent months, including two this week, and renewed accusations from Kiev that Russian forces were taking a direct part, international air lanes had remained open.
MAS said air traffic controllers lost contact with flight MH-17 at 1415 GMT as it flew over eastern Ukraine towards the Russian border, bound for Asia with 280 passengers and 15 crew aboard.
Flight tracking data indicated it was at its cruising altitude of 33,000 feet when it disappeared.
That would be beyond the range of smaller rockets used by the rebels to bring down helicopters and other low-flying Ukrainian military aircraft - but not of the SA-11 system which a Ukrainian official accused Russia of supplying to the rebels.
"I was working in the field on my tractor when I heard the sound of a plane and then a bang," one local man at told Reuters at Hrabove, known in Russian as Grabovo.
"Then I saw the plane hit the ground and break in two. There was thick black smoke."
An emergency worker said at least 100 bodies had been found so far and that debris was spread over 15km.
People were scouring the area for the black box flight recorders and separatists were later quoted as saying they had found one.
"MH-17 is not an incident or catastrophe, it is a terrorist attack," Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko tweeted.
The loss of MH17 is the second disaster for Malaysia Airlines this year, following the mysterious loss of flight MH370.
It disappeared in March with 239 passengers and crew on board on its way from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

> Ukrainian authorities believe that the plane was shot down. However, Malaysia is unable to verify the cause of this tragedy, says Najib.
> Malaysia will endeavour to "find out precisely what happened to this flight" and promises that any perpetrators will be brought to justice.
> Government is dispatching a special flight to Kiev, carrying a special Malaysian disaster assistance and rescue team as well as a medical team.
> Emergency operations centres have been established and Malaysian officials are in constant contact with counterparts in Ukraine and elsewhere, says the Prime Minister.
> Ukraine President Petro Poroshenko has pledged that there will be a full, thorough and independent investigation, says Najib.
> Ukraine will negotiate with rebels in the east of the country in order to establish a humanitarian corridor to the crash site. 6.10am: Crashed MH17 scheduled to arrive in Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), Malaysia. 7.30am: MAS says that all its flights to and from Europe will take alternative routes to avoid the usual path where flight MH17 went down in eastern Ukraine. 7.30am: MAS confirms that MH17 was carrying a total of 298 people - 283 passengers, including three infants of various nationalities, and 15 Malaysian crew members - and not 295, as previously reported.
MH17 crash: Missile used most likely BUK or similar, says expert
PETALING JAYA: The surface-to-air missile (SAM) system suspected to have caused the crash of Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flight MH17 is most likely the Soviet-designed BUK, and not a shoulder-fired missile.
According to a CNN report quoting military analyst Rick Francona, the shoulder-fired missiles used by rebels and separatist groups could be ruled out as these weapons do not have the ability to reach 30,000 feet, the altitude at which MH17 was flying when all contact was lost with it on Thursday night
The former United States Air Force lieutenant colonel said that such man-portable missiles could at best only reach 15,000 feet.
"This would indicate a surface-to-air missile or an air-to-air missile, and I think a surface-to-air missile is probably the best guess right now," he said, adding that such SAM systems like the BUK would be in the arsenal of Russian forces on the other side of the Ukrainian border.
Francona said that the BUK would be more than capable of shooting down an aircraft travelling at 30,000 feet.
MH17 disappeared from radar screens in eastern Ukraine at around 1415 GMT, hours after the Boeing 777, bound for Kuala Lumpur, had taken off from Amsterdam's Schiphol airport.
The Boeing 777 is believed to have been accidentally shot down 50km from the Ukraine-Russia border.
The CNN report also quotes Retired Brigadier General Kevin Ryan, director of the Defence and Intelligence Project at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard University as saying that the BUK, known as the SA-11 to Nato forces is operated by both the Russian and Ukrainian military.
However, Ryan said it was unlikely that the missile was fired by pro-Russia separatists due to the sophistication of the BUK system.
"It takes a lot of training and a lot of coordination to fire one of these and hit something. This is not the kind of weapon a couple of guys are going to pull out of a garage and fire," he said, concluding that if MH17 was shot down, a professional military force was responsible.
Similar views were shared by IHS Janes Americas editor Dan Wasserbly, who said a BUK battery would consist of several vehicles – a command post vehicle, a radar vehicle, several self-propelled launchers, loader vehicles and even more vehicles to carry new missiles to the batteries as necessary.
Sebelum MH17 berlepas dari AMS, company kena hantar Flight Plan dulu, yang mengandungi routes to follow, aircraft type n registration, endurance, total person on board, equipment carried.
terbang di atas restricted airspace macam kat Ukraine ni adalah perkara biasa pada mana mana airline.. as long as ada Flight Plan and Clearance, its good to go.

Rakaman Perbualan Kumpulan Pemisah Akui Tembak Jatuh Pesawat Dipintas, Lapor Kyiv Post
"Pendek kata, ia 100 peratus pesawat komersial," katanya.
