Journalist Who Professes Hindu Faith Fasts During RamadanBy Shuhaida Mohd Said

ALOR SETAR, July 25 (Bernama) -- While Muslims in the country fast during the month of Ramadan, so does Kumaran Rajamoney who professes the Hindu faith.

Kumar, as he is popularly known, said he began fasting for the first time when he was a Form Four student at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Methodist, Parit Buntar in Perak, "out of respect for my friends who were mostly Muslim".

The 29-year-old TV3 broadcast journalist said it was difficult at first to complete a month of fasting, but after several attempts, he made it through a month while studying at the Malaysian Institute of Integrative Media (MIIM), Kuala Lumpur.

"I was excited that I managed to complete my fast and I even did a study on the benefits of fasting for good health, as well as how it teaches us to restrain ourselves from anger and desire.

"I've fasted every Ramadan for 13 years and I'm grateful for the support from friends, they even wake me up for 'sahur'," he told Bernama in a recent interview here.

Kumar, who worked at Bernama TV before joining Media Prima over a year ago, said he was touched when friends and their families invited him to join for Iftar to celebrate his effort.

"Some felt proud and excited about my efforts to withstand hunger and thirst, but some were worried because they were not confident I could make it through the day.

"But I pulled through because I saw other friends who fasted and they were fine. I also wanted to give my intestine a break and behave during the fasting month.

"It's hard to accept when some people look down and doubt my capabilities, some even said some harsh words but I took it as a challenge," he said, adding that he loved to break fast with murtabak and soya drink, besides rice and Malay dishes.

According to Kumar, he will continue to fast in the future and targets at least 20 days during the month of Ramadan.


"To those people who have non-Muslim friends who are fasting, don't belittle their efforts...encourage them instead, so that they can see the beauty in each religion.

"Living in a multi-racial and multi-religious country, there's nothing wrong in joining them to fast because it shows that we are also celebrating what our Muslim friends celebrate," he added.

kat opis lama aku, bersepah lelaki melayu yg tak puasa di bulan ramadhan n dengan selambanya melantak di siang hari kat cafe opis n workstation masing2
ada sorang dj radio urban, anak raja jugak, bila aku tanya awat dia tak puasa, dia kata seumur hidup memang tak penah puasa
tapi bila hari raya, tengok dari gambar yg dia share, dialah orangnya yg paling sakan beraya macam dah 11 bulan berpuasa

Kalay x mkn di siang hari the whole day kdg2 kita pun x thn tapi once kita niat puasa, although kita miss sahur, InsyaAllah we'll make it. Niat & faith make the differences. Hikmah berpuasa, Allah helps us.

ko pi tanya ustaz satu per satu la
semua ustaz tapsiran pon beza beza
kalu ikut teori puasa
mmg nak menghukum diri dlm lapar utk menebus dosa
dosa paling besar ialah nafsu
nafsu ialah punca segara dosa
makanan sedap juga pembangkit nafsu

Tapi kalau dah lapar, nasi lauk telur dadar je pon dah jadi sedap. Ke nak kena taruk garam segenggam kasi bagi jadi tak sedap?

Mcm org arqam pula jgn di ajar anak isteri mewah mkn sedap,mkn nasi dgn garam dah cukup.Tapi suami2 mkn kambing golek.

makan sedap boleh aje, tapi jgn sampai membazir or makan sampai terlalu kenyang sampai tak larat nak beribadah.  Dah fitrah manusia mahu yg baik, cantik (di mata)  dn yg sedap (pada rasa).  Allah bekalkan manusia nafsu dn akal, maka nikmatilah sebaik cara dn bersederhana.  Makanlah untuk hidup, bukan hidup untuk makan dan berhentilah makan sebelum kenyang.  Lampiaskanlah nafsu pada jalan yg diredhai Allah.  Jadilah hamba Allah, bukan jadi hamba nafsu.
