Netizens bewildered by Hello Kitty ‘revelation’

PETALING JAYA: Netizens were bewildered following the “revelation” that Hello Kitty is not a cat, but actually a girl.
On social networks, many expressed their disbelief and poured scorn over the “revelation” that had been reported widely all over the world.
David Siew Hsu Wai said it was ridiculous to draw Hello Kitty like a cat and not call it a cat.
“It’s tantamount to saying Donald Duck is not a duck,” he said.
Stephanie Ha took a similar view and said that “Maybe Mickey Mouse is also not a mouse too!” she said.
According to University of Hawaii anthropologist Christine Yano, in a Los Angeles Times report, she had been told by Sanrio, Hello Kitty’s creator, that “Hello Kitty is not a cat. She’s a cartoon character. She is a little girl. She is a friend. But she is not a cat. She’s never depicted on all fours. She walks and sits like a two-legged creature. She does have a pet cat of her own, however, and it’s called Charmmy Kitty”.
Sanrio confirmed the news and also revealed Hello Kitty’s biography that describes her as a bright little girl with a heart of gold.
Hello Kitty, a Japanese creation, was first introduced in 1974 and is reportedly worth approximately RM23bil a year in sales.
Wairene Weong said, “Girls got whiskers?” while Ashraf Shinichi said that “she had been lied to all her life.”
Sabrina Gan said that from the word ‘kitty’ you know it’s a cat.
“Maybe there was a typo error during its launching. Hello Katty became Hello Kitty. Thats why in the last minute they added whiskers to the picture of the girl,” she said.
Izyan Darlina however, asked if it mattered whether Hello Kitty is a cat or a human, a bit of both or even neither.
“All I know Hello Kitty is cute, sweet and adorable and that is good enough for the inner child in me,” she said.
Hello Kitty figures are popular all over the world with fights and traffic jams having been reported as collectors have gone all out to get the toys.
