Police car set on fire as fans from Sarawak, Perak clash in Kuching

KUALA LUMPUR: The State Stadium in Kuching, Sarawak turned into an inferno when a police car was set on fire by unruly fans who saw their team (Sarawak) exit from the Malaysia Cup competition after a 1-1 draw against Perak, Saturday night.

Unhappy fans and supporters from Sarawak clashed with fans from Perak, forcing the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) to fire teargas to stop clashes from fans of both teams.

Sarawak who finished at the bottom of Group B with four points were shown the exit door together with T-Team who ended at the bottom of Group D with three points after losing 1-2 to Sime Darby.

It is believed that fans from Perak had started teasing the Sarawak fans after the final whistle since their team had been booted out of the Malaysia Cup competition and that prompted the Sarawak fans to react.

Clashes which started inside the stadium with flares and firecrackers thrown onto the field, it quickly spread to outside the stadium while the fencing was also torn down.

Despite the draw, Perak moved to the top of Group B with eight points, the same as Terengganu but with better goal difference while Kedah remain within striking distance of the front two with seven points.

Terengganu and Kedah played out a 2-2 draw at the Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah Stadium in Kuala Terengganu.
Terengganu scored through Ashaari Samsuddin (36th min) and Ismail Faruqi Asha’ri (79th min) while Kedah had to
thank Baddrol Bakhtiar (45th min) and Namkung Woong (68th min).
Meanwhile, at the Tuanku Abdul Rahman Stadium in Paroi, Police who have already qualified for the Malaysia Cup quarterfinals, were held to a 1-1 draw by Selangor.
The Cops, still unbeaten after five matches, head Group D with 13 points followed by Selangor with seven points while Sime Darby who beat T-Team 2-1, have six points. — Bernama

Fans storm Stadium Negeri pitch after Perak draw

KUCHING: Chaos broke out at the State Stadium around 11pm when fans invaded the pitch following Sarawak’s 1-1 draw with Perak. Some sections of unhappy spectators threw firecrackers while those on the field took to vandalising advertisement boards.

It was believed that fans were directing their anger at Perak following an incident at Ipoh when Sarawak played Perak and Sarawak fans were attacked and abused by the home supporters.

Fans gathered outside the stadium main gate to block the Perak team bus from leaving.

Police Federal Reserve Unit used teargas to disperse the crowd. Two police cars were overturned with one being set alight. It is believed three spectators have been apprehended.

At last night’s match, defender Hairol Mokhtar put the home side 1 up in the 60th minute. Perak cancelled the lead in the 75th minute through Marco Tulio Lopes.

The goal which many believed was scored from an offside postition could have fueled frustration to an already tense atmosphere as Sarawak faced elimination from the Malaysia Cup.

Perak supporters assault Sarawak fans after Malaysia Cup match

KUCHING: Five Sarawak supporters from the group ‘GB13’ were allegedly assaulted outside the compound of Stadium Perak on Wednesday night, according to fan accounts and video on social media.

The attack and name-calling which happened after a Malaysia Cup match which Sarawak lost 2-0, was believed to have been sparked by one of the influential supporter groups of Perak FA (PAFA) at the stadium parking lot when the Sarawak visitors were about to leave.

According to one of the victims, Hifadhi Fatha Sarbini, 22, a Sarawakian working in Ampang, they were about to leave the stadium peacefully when one of the alleged attackers was seen shouting profanities and racial abuse at them in the parking lot.

“I saw him from a distance and was approached by one of the home supporters explaining the situation when seconds later, another home (Perak) supporter ran towards me and threw punches to my head and (I was) being kicked at my body,” he said. “They were shouting ‘balik la..ini Ipoh’ (‘Go home, this is Ipoh’), ‘Sarawak tak reti main’ (Sarawak don’t know how to play’ and ‘Melayu dan Iban Sarawak bodoh’ (‘Malays and Ibans of Sarawak are stupid’) at us when they cornered us,” said Hifadhi.

He later urged the police and the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) to take action against Perak AFA for failing to provide adequate security to the visiting fans.

“I had lodged a police report today and I hope police will conduct their investigation thoroughly,” he said.

Another victim, Charles Steve, 25, said he was assaulted before running away for protection at the parking lot.

“However, another home supporter suddenly came from the back and kicked me at the waist,” said Charles who added that another Sarawakian suffered a bleeding nose following the attack.

“It disappoints me to have this experience in Perak as this was my first ever trip to Ipoh,” he added.

“What have we done wrong? Have we treated outside supporters badly before? Is this what FAM wants to happen in the Malaysian league? Something must be done to ensure these people who acted as ‘samseng kampung’ (‘village gangsters’) do not attack others too,” he added.

Two videos recorded by a witness went viral in the social media where the first, a 15-second video shows a guy dressed in black t-shirt seen punching one of the victims, while another 1-minute video shows the homesters shouting at Sarawakians “to go back”.

The racial slur against Sarawak also happened on the pitch as Sarawak import player Junior Eldstal in his Twitter account yesterday hinted of racist remarks thrown at another Sarawakian player during the match.

“Still very disgusted and disappointed to hear racist remarks made towards my team mate #SayNoToRacism” he tweeted.

Eldstal however did not name the player who made the remark.
