IPOH: A Kuala Sepetang village chief has lodged a police report against a Malay daily over its news article that Kuala Sepetang was being overrun by ‘mafia’ groups.
Acting police chief Deputy Comm Datuk A. Paramasivam said the police have received the report earlier this week as the village chief felt that the news article was baseless and would have a negative effect on the economy in the small fishing town.
“The village chief is unhappy with the news article.
“There were was no offence committed but we still received the report,” he told a press conference on Tuesday.
A Malay daily, had on Sunday published an article that mafia activities were rampant in the area, consisting of the township of Kuala Sepetang, Bagan Panchordan also and Pulau Kuala Sangga.
In the report, it was alleged that various criminal activities were including smuggling, drug trafficking and gambling, encroachment into Government land and intrusion of illegal immigrants have had occurred and taking place and being controlled by influential syndicates in the said areas.
DCP Paramasivam also refuted the article, noting that Kuala Sepetang was a peaceful town and the word ‘mafia’ used was too harsh.
“Tourists would have abstained from visiting Kuala Sepetang if mafia groups were rampant there,” he said, adding that Kuala Sepetang was an eco-tourism spot, famous for dolphin and eagle watching.
“As of today, the police have yet to receive any reports from tourists that they have been threatened or robbed,” he added. |
