3.48pm: A couple who had lived around the corner from the children’s home for 18 months have told AAP they didn’t feel safe in the area and it was not uncommon to hear fighting and drinking at night.

Specialist police officers were travelling from Brisbane to assist with the investigation, Detective Inspector Asnicar said.

“We are missing nothing as far as conducting this investigation,” he said. “This is not a small job, we’re not taking this lightly at all ... we’ll cover every angle before this is finished.” The incident was a tragic event, but there was no need for the public to be concerned about their safety, he said.

3.46pm: Prime Minister Tony Abbott has also released a statement.
“The news out of Cairns is heartbreaking,” Mr Abbott said.
“All parents would feel a gut-wrenching sadness at what has happened. This is an unspeakable crime. These are trying days for our country.
Start of sidebar.

“Tonight, there will be tears and prayers across our country for these children.
“My thoughts are with the Queensland Police and all who have to respond to this terrible situation.”

3.45pm: Queensland Premier Campbell Newman has released a statement about the tragedy: “I am deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic events in Cairns today,” he said.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of those concerned.
“I’m also aware of the impact this will have on the emergency service workers and police officers who responded to the scene, and I have asked the Acting Ministers to make sure those individuals are receiving the support they need.
“Indeed, the whole Cairns community and the people of Queensland will feel the effects of this tragedy, particularly at a time of year when families come together.
“I ask that all Queenslanders reach out to those who may need support in coming days and do not hesitate to seek professional assistance if needed.”

3.44pm: Lisa Thaiday described the family and extended relatives as close-knit. “We’re a big family and most of us are from the (Torres) Strait,” she said. “I just can’t believe it. We just found out (about) those poor babies.”

3.30pm: Manoora is a lower socio--economic area, with a lot of social housing

3.12pm: Queensland police have said the situation is under control and there is no concern for anyone else. The woman who is helping them with their inquiries is not under arrest.

3.10pm: Police are searching the gardens of homes around the site in a search for clues as to what happened in the home.

3.05pm: Lisa Thaiday, a relative of the victims, said that a 20-year-old brother of the children arrived at the house to find his siblings dead inside.

2.55pm: Specialist police officers were travelling from Brisbane to assist with the investigation, Cairns Regional Crime Co-ordinator Detective Inspector Bruno Asnicar said.

“We are missing nothing as far as conducting this investigation,” he said.

“This is not a small job, we’re not taking this lightly at all ... we’ll cover every angle before this is finished.”

The incident was a tragic event, but there was no need for the public to be concerned about their safety, he said.

2.45pm: Det Insp Asnicar could not rule out that the number of deaths may rise. The street has been cordoned off and a crime scene will remain in place for at least the next day, Det Insp Asnicar told reporters at the scene.

It was an “extremely distressing” scene for the first response officers.

2.20pm: Eight children have been stabbed to death at a house in north Queensland. The Queensland Police Service have released a statement regarding the incident.

Police were called to the Murray Street residence in Manoora around 11.20am following reports of a woman with serious injuries.

During an examination of the residence police located the bodies of the children, all aged between 18 months and 15 years.

The woman, believed to be aged in her 30s, is receiving treatment for her injuries and is currently assisting police with their investigations.

2.05pm: It has been reported the children range in age from 18 months to 15 years. Police were called out to the incident at 11.20am (local time). The woman is in her 30s.

We can confirm Cairns detectives have established a crime scene & begun an investigation into the deaths of 8 children in Manoora today.
— QPS Media Unit (@QPSmedia) December 19, 2014

1.55pm: Up to eight young children are believed to have been stabbed to death by a woman in suburban Cairns.

Police in the far north Queensland city are at the scene of the house in Manoora, close to the city centre.

A police source has told The Australian the woman has stabbed the children and then herself in a suicide attempt, leaving her unconscious and in hospital.

Queensland Police Media would not confirm the number of children dead. The Australian has been told eight children have died, but there are reports it is seven.

Detectives are describing the scene as horrific, like something out of a horror movie. They are establishing a major incident room in the Cairns police headquarters. Officers are swarming the scene.

Wanita Australia didakwa bunuh tujuh anak kandungAFP |Kemas kini:Disember 21, 2014

Cairns stabbing accused may have been high on meth

ARRESTED: Mersane Warria was also taken to hospital with injuries, where she was placed under police guard.

Australian police detectives investigating the deaths of eight children in Cairns are considering the possibility the prime suspect – the mother of seven of the children – was on the drug methamphetamine at the time of the deaths.

Mersane Warria, 37, remained under police guard in Cairns Hospital with knife wounds on Sunday morning.

She has been formally interviewed as part of the investigation.

Family members mourn the loss of eight children killed in a Cairns home.

Detetive Inspector Bruno Asnicar said he would not comment on the speculation, other than to say it was an element of the police investigation.

"These are all things that will be presented to a court," he said.

"As you can imagine, all of these things are extremely relevant and I understand that people are very interested in those facts."

But Inspector Asnicar did say it was a "very important part of the investigation".

In another development overnight, it emerged not all the children had been stabbed to death.

"We won't get that [information] until after the post mortems," he said.
"…It could be a range of things, from suffocation to a thousand other things, that might have been the cause of death."

He said the post mortems would likely be completed by Sunday afternoon at the earliest.

It is understood charges could be laid shortly after that forensic investigation.

About 100 people had been interviewed as part of the investigation, he said.

"When you're dealing with murder, there's nothing that's done half-way," he said.

"It's very intense and everything's collated very accurately."

Acting Assistant Commissioner Paul Taylor said it was disappointing to see some media naming and showing images of the dead children in defiance of indigenous cultural protocols.

Taylor said the community had been "disappointed" with the decision to publish.

"There's been a number of photos and names shown, which to a degree is disappointing in some of the newspapers, particularly down south," he said.

"Clearly they haven't come from the police.

"We understand and respect the role of the media, but our relationship with the community is paramount and we've taken steps today to reassure them that that information hasn't come from us."

Several church services on Sunday will remember the children - four girls aged two, 11, 12 and 14 and four boys aged five, six, eight and nine. Ms Warria was the mother of the seven youngest children and the eldest girl's aunt.
