1,097 bumi buyers for Datum Jelatek condo

PETALING JAYA: A total of 1,097 potential bumiputra buyers have registered their interest in the 674 Datum Jelatek condominium units, according to the Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS).

Quashing claims that Malays could not afford the luxury units, its general manager Azlan Md Alifiah said in a statement that the bumiputra interest shown in the project had exceeded expectations.

“As of Jan 14, 2015, the project received overwhelming support and so far, a total of 1,097 bumiputra buyers have registered and this far exceeded the number of units available,” he said.

On Sunday, hundreds of people protested against the construction of the Datum Jelatek luxury condominium in Keramat. They broke into the construction site of the project, tearing down the zinc hoardings placed around it.

The protesters, led by Datum Jelatek action committee chairman Salleh Samad, claimed that the project would not benefit the Malays, as the RM700,000 per unit condominium, developed by Datumcorp International (DCI), was beyond their reach.

Salleh claimed that the project would allow the non-Malays to reside in the “100% Malay” area, a situation that he said the Malays in the area were not prepared to accept.

Azlan said yesterday they would initiate legal action against the “irresponsible quarters” who had caused damage to public property and vandalism at the site.

“What happened is a disappointment as the demonstration, which was otherwise peaceful, turned violent when some individuals destroyed the hoardings.

“We are looking at this matter seriously and legal action will be taken against those involved. DCI has also lodged a police report on the matter,” said Azlan.

On allegations that PKNS had never met with residents on the project, he said, both the state subsidiary and DCI had held several meetings with Taman Keramat residents.

“We have organised meetings and dialogues with the residents and we even received positive feedback from them,” he added.

Selangor Mentri Besar Azmin Ali said public opinion had been gathered and necessary measures had been taken in line with the feedback received.

“The development in Jalan Jelatek is not something that has just been proposed and we’ve had dialogue sessions several times,” he told reporters after attending the monthly morning meeting for state employees.

Commenting on the way the demonstration went, he said “any development in Selangor must not be mired in racial sentiments”.

“Although we have a quota system (in developmental projects), this must not be used as a sentiment that can prevent Selangor’s development,” he said.

Azmin also questioned if the other demonstrators, apart from Salleh, were residents from the area.

bagi saya simple sahaja..kalau diri sendiri tak mampu, tak perlu nak halang orang lain beli benda  ...

Kannn  .tak payah menyalak kununnya kerajaan tak bantu kehulu, org kaya bertambah kaya kehilir.

Tak mampu .buat je rumah setinggan disepanjang sungai gombak..dan tengok je org kata duduk tengah2 bandaraya dgn hati yg terbuka..jgn sakit hati, jeles and what so ever.

Uncle kalau nak buat perbandingan pun biarlah logik. Datum Jelatek berapa besar?

rasanya melayu sekarang tak la semiskin itu..yang ramai duduk ditepi sungai sekarang ini majoritinya adalah kaum pendatang..memang betul tak perlu salahkan kerajaan..rasanya kerajaan dah menolong sehabis boleh bangsa melayu ni...kalau masih miskin juga, ianya disebabkan sikap sendiri..Bill Gates pernah berkata ' if you were born poor its not your mistake, but if you die poor its your mistake'

It’s all about the money

Published: January 27, 2015 07:57 AM

JANUARY 27 — On Sunday, January 25, 2015, residents living in Kampung Keramat demonstrated against the Datum Jelatek luxury condominiums.

“Fearing their Malay-majority city neighbourhood may soon be overrun by Chinese, a group of residents in Taman Keramat marched to the construction site of upscale condominium project Datum Jelatek here and violently tore down its cladding today.”

Yesterday, PKNS was quoted in The Star that, “All 674 units of controversial Datum Jelatek condominiums have been registered to Bumiputra buyers, debunking allegations that the Malays could not afford to purchase the luxury units. Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS) in a statement said that a total of 1,097 potential bumiputra buyers have shown their interest, exceeding their expectations on the project.”

With the median salary in Malaysia at RM1,700, one would need to pay a monthly instalment of RM3,500 for a RM700,000 apartment.

Melayu sudah maju. Melayu sudah kaya.

Social media, of course, exploded with heckles — who’s embarrassed now? The protesters now have egg literally on their faces. There would not be an invasion of Chinese moving to the mostly Malay enclave, but rich, moneyed, we-have-arrived Malays. Their very own brethren.

The lawyer cum columnist, Azhar Harun, wrote a public note on his Facebook, of his suspicions about the protest.

“I can’t help but suspect that the said demonstration was orchestrated by certain parties who were out to tarnish the Selangor state government. Call it a hunch. Or intuition. Or reasonable deduction. Whatever. I don’t have evidence. But that’s how I feel. That was my first reaction. Which public rally or demonstration would make available free nasi lemak and drinks to the rally goers?”

He continued to say that Sunday’s demonstration was a stark reminder that within our seemingly peaceful multi-racial society, “… there are sections that are parochial and exclusionary in nature. At a glance, such parochial, tribalistic and hence, exclusionary sub-society, is almost a trademark of our society so much so that it has been accepted by all and sundry. Or at the very least, accepted by acquiescence.

I refer to Muhammed Abdul Khalid’s book The Colour of Inequality and his paper on wealth distribution in Malaysia.  He shows that about 90 per cent of Bumiputera households have no savings, and about two-thirds have no financial assets.

In terms of wealth, about 72 per cent of Malaysians who are without wealth are Bumiputera, while 17 per cent are Chinese and 10.7 per cent are Indians. What is rather shocking is that an average Bumiputera has about less than one month of financial reserve to cover his monthly expenditure in case of loss of income or employment.

His study also finds that wealth distribution is extremely skewed, top 10 per cent of Malaysian households per capita control 40 per cent of the country’s wealth, while the bottom 40 per cent own only 5 per cent.

More than 92 per cent of wealth comes from real estate, while financial assets contribute the rest.  The study also finds that ethnic disparity in wealth is much higher than the disparity in income.

The Chinese, on average, have the highest wealth which is 90 per cent higher than the Bumiputera and 50 per cent higher compared to the Indians.

Improving socio economic status of Malaysians requires a consistent two-pronged approach, with a focus on both the bottom 40 per cent and on maintaining/increasing growth equality.

The weekend’s demonstration is more than about politics, political intrigue and Azmin Ali. It is not about Malays versus Chinese and Indians. It is about the Haves and Have Nots among the Malays, and there may be hell to pay.

naper bila masyarakat melayu bantah pembangunan mesti masok surat khabar n kata mereka tu mentaliti  ...

Mungkin disebabkan oleh asas bantahan tu sendiri. Bantah kondo sbb taknak bagi bangsa lain masuk kawasan tu. Bantah highway sbb keselamatan, pencemaran, rasuah dsb. Tp yg bantah highway melebih2 pun aku meluat gak.

'10% bukan penghalang pembangunan Kg Baru'
