Man forcibly removed by police after occupying hospital bed for over 3 years
A man in Beijing was forced out of his hospital bed on Tuesday after he'd stayed there for nearly three and a half years and even chained himself onto the bed.
The man, surnamed Chen, had gotten in a car accident back in August 2011 and was sent to the Beijing Jingmei Group Hospital to be treated. He was discharged a month later, but had to be readmitted in October due to some swelling in his legs. After receiving treatment for three months, doctors said he was ready to go home. Chen, however, insisted that his legs were so in so much pain that he couldn't straighten them out, China Youth Daily reports.
Deep vein thrombosis, which can cause leg pain or swelling, occasionally occurs when one is confined to a hospital bed for a long period of time. Although doctors said he'd recovered, the 55-year-old patient continued to insist that it was the hospital's responsibility to take care of him. He even missed his own son's wedding during his time in bed.
Chen received several notices to leave, but refused. He'd racked up a bill of at least two million yuan occupying beds in the hospital, a doctor named Zhang Jinying told reporters, but they never even got a penny out of him. Meanwhile, neither Chen nor his wife were working and had no source of income.
Finally, the hospital decided to take the case to court. Chen initially refused to assist in the process, claiming that the hospital was giving him false test results and that he didn't believe in the law. Clearly.
He eventually agreed to undergo legal procedures and health tests, and his fate was ultimately decided. The court ordered Chen to be removed from his hospital bed.
Authorities arrived at the Beijing Jingmei Group Hospital yesterday afternoon, however, to find that he had locked himself onto the hospital bed railings. Police were forced to break the locks to remove Chen from his beloved bed, as he shouted all the while.
