Toshiba Medical Systems picks Penang for first SEA plant

Published on: Thursday, February 12, 2015
Penang: Toshiba Medical Systems Manufacturing Asia Sdn Bhd (TMMA), a wholly-owned Malaysian subsidiary of Toshiba Medical Systems Corporation, has picked Penang as the site of its first manufacturing plant in South East Asia.
The group has spent RM50 million on the building and manufacturing facilities and the plant will offer about 200 job opportunities in future.
Satoshi Tsunakawa, President and Chief Executive Officer of healthcare company Toshiba Corporation, said the Penang facility which began operations in December last year, currently produces diagnostic ultrasound systems, while manufacturing of printed wiring boards will start next month.
He said all the production lines will be fully operational by July this year and cater to demand from global markets.
"We are pleased to be able to produce ultrasound systems from our new manufacturing site in Malaysia and reaffirms Toshiba's commitment to expanding its footprint to the country," he told reporters during a briefing on the new plant here today.
Tsunakawa said the health care component currently contributed about six per cent to the group's total turnover annually and the hope is to achieve about 10 per cent over the next three years.
The 93,000 sq ft manufacturing Penang plant based in Bayan Lepas is part of Toshiba Corporation's US$1 billion investment over the next five years.
According to Tsunakawa, the plant currently produces the Aplio A300, Aplio A400 and Aplio A500 ultrasound models which are expected to be exported to Europe in the first quarter of this year.
He said the plant currently employs 114 workers and this is expected to increase to 200 once it is fully operational by the second half of the year.
"The facility's main product is the ultrasound diagnostic system and over 90 per cent of production is geared towards the export market," he added. – Bernama
TMMA is a leading worldwide provider of medical diagnostic imaging systems and comprehensive medical solution, such as CT, X-ray and vascular, ultrasound, nuclear medicine and MRI systems, as well as information systems for medical institutions. – Bernama

Selain org Jepun, yahudi pun datang Penang...

Seagate’s entry into Batu Kawan with a re-investment of RM 1.05 billion investment over 5 years is a boost for manufacturing sector of Penang. However this investment has still not been recorded in our investment figures for MIDA.
Seagate is a US-based company involved in the data storage industry and manufactures hard drives and storage solutions. Seagate was incorporated in 1979 with its principal executive office in Cupertino, California. Seagate is listed in Nasdaq stock exchange and has over 50,000 employees globally. Penang Seagate founded in 1988, operates a hard disc drive (HDD) manufacturing plant and an information technology (IT) shared resource centre.
The State Government of Penang is pleased that Seagate is expanding their operations in Penang and has decided to locate their new facility in the Batu Kawan Industrial Park, Seberang Perai. Penang Seagate Industries (M) Sdn Bhd will purchase a piece of land of 40 acres with the option to purchase another 30 acres in Batu Kawan Industrial Park. The purchased of land is in line with Seagate’s strategic business model/plan to support their long term operations in Penang.

The State Government welcomes Seagate’s new investment into Penang which will not only serve as an economic stimulus for the growth of the manufacturing sector but will also endorse Batu Kawan as a preferred global location to invest, work, live, learn, and play. Even though Penang is keen in promoting the services sector by launching the RM 3.3 billion “Business Process Outsourcing-Information Communication Technology Hub(BPO)” initiative in 1st March 2014, Penang will continue to support its manufacturing sector for further growth which has contributed almost 50% to GDP of Penang for the past 5 years. A strong manufacturing sector is a necessary condition for the growth of the services sector and the BPO Hub.
The decision by Seagate to re-invest in Penang is a strong boost of confidence for the State Government’s initiatives to support economic growth by attracting high-value, knowledge-intensive, advanced technology and ICT-based companies which can provide high-income jobs for locals. This reinvestment of RM1.05 billion by Seagate over 5 years is a major investment after Temasek Holdings of Singapore signed a joint-venture deal to develop of High-Technology Industrial Park in Batu Kawan and a BPO Hub in Bayan Baru valued at RM11.3 billion.
