KOTA KINABALU: Some RM48mil has been allocated for the reconstruction and urgently-needed repairs of schools in Sabah.
Education Ministry Secretary-General Tan Sri Dr Madinah Mohamad said of the amount, RM25mil would go towards the reconstruction of classroom blocks in 22 schools destroyed in fires, damaged by floods or land slips.
She said the Ministry would be issuing the funds to the Sabah Education Department by next week.
Madinah said this after visiting the SK Penimbawan in Tuaran district, about 70km from the city and a 15-minute boat ride from Tuaran town.
She said reconstruction of the classroom blocks at SK Penimbawan would take about three to four weeks to complete.
Madinah said various temporary measures would be taken to ensure that affected students would be as comfortable as possible at the temporary classrooms while the new blocks were being constructed.
The school hit the spotlight after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak posted of a photograph on Twitter showing "wall-less" classrooms being used by students after buildings there were destroyed in a fire a year ago.
Najib said this situation was unacceptable and ordered Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Ali Hamsa to investigate the matter.
SK Penimbawan has 248 students, with 102 students from Year 2, 3 and 4 placed in the temporary classrooms since last year. |
