CLEVELAND - The mother of a 2-year-old boy who fell into the cheetah exhibit at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo over the weekend has been charged with child endangering.

Zoo officials confirmed the misdemeanor charge to newsnet5.com Monday morning.

Cleveland Fire Department spokesperson Larry Gray told newsnet5.com the mother, Michelle Schwab, 38, of Delaware, Ohio, was holding two children near the pit when the 2-year-old boy fell inside  on Saturday.

KinderCare on Sawmill Road in Columbus confirmed that Schwab is the childcare facility's assistant director.

Father of boy dropped into Cleveland zoo cheetah exhibit quiet about incident

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The father of the 2-year-old boy who was dropped into the cheetah exhibit at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo over the weekend had little to say about the incident on Monday morning.

"I really don't want to talk," said Cory Schwab when Northeast Ohio Media Group contacted him by phone. "We are really just worried about our child."

Schwab's wife, Michelle, is charged with endangering children after Metroparks rangers said she held the boy over a barrier at the exhibit on Saturday and dropped him.

The child suffered a broken leg, according to a court document.

Cory Schwab declined to give Northeast Ohio Media Group the name of the attorney representing the Delaware, Ohio, family.

Michelle Schwab is due in Cleveland Municipal Court on April 22.
