Wanita Umno: No one died, so protest not seditious


The protest by Taman Medan residents against a church in their neighbourhood should not be considered seditious as no one died or was injured or got upset by it, claimed former Petaling Jaya Selatan Umno Wanita chief Munaliza Hamzah.

"Though we went there for a demonstration, no one died, no one was injured and no one was upset after that," she said.

IGP says church protest not seditious

The protest to call for the removal of a cross from a church building did not breach the Sedition Act, according to inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar.
"We don't see any form of sedition because it does not touch religion, it did not touch the Christian faith.
"It was local residents protesting against the location of the church.
"You must be careful in this aspect, don't link this to something which involves the Christian faith," he told reporters.

Zahid: 'Cross' protesters face action under Sedition Act

SERDANG: ‎The group of people who protested against a church in Taman Medan can face action under the Sedition Act, said Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (pic).

"Of course action is to be taken," said the Home Minister.

"I am very colour blind and police are colour blind. Whoever ... action has to be taken and will be taken ," he said.

"Regardless of who, if anyone touches on any religion, they are subject to the Sedition Act," he told reporters after launching the Home Ministry-ESQ Alumni Organisation at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS) on Monday.

When asked if Umno members faced disciplinary action if they were found to be involved during the protest, Dr Ahmad Zahid, who is also the party vice-president, said: "Of course, as they are breaching the law and in Umno, we have to respect other religions, so they have to pay the consequences."

On Sunday, a group of about 50 protesters had gathered outside a church in Taman Medan and demanded that the cross be taken down, claiming that it challenged Islam.

Some protesters also said that the existence of a church in the vicinity was an affront to their faith.

It is understood that the cross was taken down by church authorities several hours later.

The church was conducting Sunday service when the protesters gathered outside.

The organisers of the protest in Taman Medan said they wanted the cross hung on the church building to be taken down to prevent racial tensions from flaring up.
